I read this article, and although it appears one sided, it addresses the "down side" of owning a sugar glider in an area unlike it's natural habitat. I personally felt the article was well written for it's purpose, and the information within should be considered prior to aquiring this particular "pet". However, I do take exception to the authors' "opinion" that the domesticated cat or dog is the best "lifetime companion", as we all know, the are good cats and dogs, and there are cats and dogs that have been improperly treated and or trained, making them a less desirble option for a pet, ( unless handled and cared for with extreme patience and love). I believe this is similar to our situation with our wonderful world of sugar gliders. These little animals simply need owners who are willing to take the time to educate themselves with the special care needs of these animals, and be willing to make the necessary changes in there own lives to facilitate thier "job" of raising (owning) these special, and as we all know exceptional "lifetime companions". The fact is, these animals do have special needs, and require more time and effort to care for than other available pets. I think we as educated and loving owners of these animals should be greatful that there are people concerned with individuals knowing the possible down side of owing this or any other pet, prior to aquiring a pet in order to prevent further abuse ( and we all know this happens unfortunately) of this or any other animal. And undoubtedly those who are tuly interested and capable of caring for a sugar glider will look at more than this one single page for information concerning sugar gliders and will come across the many informative pages that explain the fun and loving aspects of these pets.
