: Clara, In the leadbeaters that I use.. You normally mix in 2 teaspoons of RepCal, If a person wants to use the Glideraid with the leadbeaters... What would be the safest, most ideal mixture? Short of eliminating it from the recipe all together. Also, what exactly is Glideraid? I understand it is Bee Pollen but it also has other vits and mins too as well as calcium with Vit D3. Is it suppose to replace RepCal or if used with Repcal what would the safe dose each day be?
Gliderade is a vitamin enriched food supplement meant to simulate the nectar and pollen sugar gliders eat in the wild.
It is not a vitamin supplement. Gliderade can be fed daily, I recommend only 1/4 tsp powder mixed with 1 1/4 tsp water because feeding too much causes them to ignore other food.
Gliderade is actually a modified version of Lorikeet Nectar made by Avico. Lorikeets are Australian birds that eat nectar and pollen from eucalyptus flowers (and others) like sugar gliders do.
Gliderade has an approx. 1:1 ratio of calcium to phosphorus so it is necessary to add a calcium supplement to their diet once or twice a week.
Calcium or any other vitamin supplement should not be provided more than twice a week to prevent them from building up to toxic levels. Oversupplementation can cause a wide range of problems including kidney and liver damage.
Gliders are tiny animals and a little bit is all that is needed.
I only feed the leadbeater's mix once a week, so I put the Rep Cal in the leadbeater's. I use 1/4 to 1/2 tsp Rep Cal in my recipe depending on what I add (usually makes 1 to 2 cups.)
If I feel I haven't been providing enough calcium rich foods that week, I will mix a tiny pinch of Rep Cal in some honey for them.
Hmm..I really can't tell you what the ideal mix would be, but if you answer some questions for me I can give you my humble opinion.
What is your entire recipe for leadbeater's? How often do you feed your gliders leadbeater's and how much? Do you provide any other supplements? Do you feed them any commercial diets?
What other kinds of food & treats do you give them?
