A while back I had posted in the Glider Gossip section of the forum asking about my new male, Gideon, bonding with my male and female Sorin and Lily. Gideon is a 2yr old single Pp glider I adopted from a family who said their children lost interest in him.. Lily was being a meanie and kept attacking Gideon. (His nickname is Gigdy-woo) Well, I noticed that for 3-4 days, he wasn't eating very much. He would accept treats, because well, what glider wouldn't? He hadn't eaten much when I first brought him home, and he always looked fairly small. Well, I took him to another vet (who owns her own gliders) and she said he was very small for his age. Only 84g when he should be over 100. :( She said he looked ill, since he wouldn't lift his ears and he was curled in a position that suggested abdominal pain. She gave me some antibiotics in case of infection, and said if he wasn't better in 2 days to bring him in for x-ray. Well, on the 2nd morning before work (he still hadn't been eating.) I went to give all my gliders their morning mealies, and Gidgy wouldn't even take any. He wasn't in his pouch, just curled up in the corner of his cage and wouldn't move. I freaked out, and I thank my manager for understanding my love for my animals, and I rushed him to the vet. In the 2 days he hadn't eaten again, he went down to 80g. She took a general x-ray and nothing showed up, so she suggested a barium treatment. I agreed, and left my poor baby in her care while I returned to work for 2-3 hours. When I went to pick him up, she went over the x-rays with me and it turned out he had some sort of mass in his stomach. The vet assumed it was possibly a hairball, or some sort of fabric or soft material he had ingested at some point. She said it could have been in his stomach for a very long time and gone unnoticed until recently. She sent me home with 2 different medications (Laxatives and a lubricative medicine, hoping he would poo out whatever mass was there.) I also had to syringe feed him 2-3 times a day to make sure he was getting nutrients. Luckily, after a few days of diarrhea he began eating again! He became much more active and loveable. And one fateful night, he managed to wiggle away from me and go to Sorin and Lily's cage. Lily ran right up to him...and didn't attack him. She sniffed him a bit, and they whistled to each other for a while. That was about 2 weeks ago. They are all happily living together as one colony now. It just makes me so happy to finally see him with his own little glider family, having been alone in the small Pp cage his whole life. He seems so much happier. Even though I got Sorin and Lily as small babies, I feel like I've bonded the most with Gideon in this short time I've had him. He is such a sweetheart. I just wanted to share his happy ending with everyone. It makes me so happy to see them all sleeping together in one big glider love-ball. And I think if I get anymore gliders, I would like them all to be rescues or adoptions.

Yes, both my boys are neutered. They both were originally from Pocket Pets. (Don't worry; I realized everything Ppp says is pretty much bollocks. ) I'd still like to get a second female soon, to even everything out. |
