“Forever Home–A Poem for a Certain Sugar Glider”

You were about the size and shape
Of my heart. No wonder you had
No trouble slipping within, curled up
To sleep. That made my heart glad
That I could hold you, a perfect pouch
Made useful by the dear contents within.
It was for you that I opened my heart
To peek inside every now and again
And your eyes would meet mine
To see what treats I had to give.

I loved you enough to give you a friend,
And my heart grew twice in size
As I saw your loneliness abate
And the happiness in your eyes.
You taught me so much about love,
Patience and joy in little things:
A chirp, a purr, a play in the wheel,
Your nightly interest in foraging
And your eyes would meet mine
To see what treats I had to give.

Then one day, your eyes were closed.
We petted you but you did not stir.
You dreamed your way into Heaven, dear,
My darling little bundle of fur.
Glide free, my dear, my sweet little love;
I’ll do my best not to cry
When I think of your best, new home,
Your forever home in the sky.

Ah man, I gotta quit reading this stuff at work. Now I'm fighting off tears.

That was the best poem I have ever read in my entire life. So sorry for the little guy but he doesn't feel pain anymore. I bet he misses you. You seem like a great friend for a little helpless animal

I am sorry for your loss, your words made me tear up as it makes me think of my own glider(s)...You are a Master of Words, your poem is a gift to your little one and all of us as well.

Thank you.

. The last stanza made me choke up and cry. Batman had a great life because of you, now he is even happier . This poem was really deep and thoughtful. I'm happy that you are recovering from your loss ((HUGS)) <3

Rebecca, I thought I had replied to your post but apparently I didn't . That week my sister with cancer was very ill. So sorry for your loss! I live in Georgia, also. I live in Northwest part of the state.Maybe we could have a Georgia meet-up one of these days!

Oh Rebecca. I am so, so sorry for your loss. He is no longer in pain or sick. He is merely sitting at Rainbow Bridge waiting for you and his daddy and Catwoman of course. "Huge Hugz". That is a beautiful poem.

Thank you! I made my husband cry with both poems. We reread them today and sure enough, we both choked a little. It gets easier everyday. Helps to think that he's happy and that he loves me and we'll see each other again one day.
