SierraWeister Posted - Apr 01 2013 : 11:53:35 PM I have had my baby boy Chip for about a month. I am looking for him a mate but i dont want to until im sure that i can handle him. Ive gotten him to come to me as long as i have a treat. And im having problems figuring out what foods he likes and does not like. But my main problem i need help with is that i spend so much time with him and he still isnt warming up like i would like him to. He wont let me pick him up and if i sit down and hes not sleeping in my hood then he tries to run from me. I really want to be able to hold him and pick him up with having a blanket or cloth to get him because he gets so angry with me. Could anybody help me out? Tell me ways to help him warm up to me? And if its not too much trouble tell me diets and foods you feed your babies and your feeding routines so i could get a little more help. Any information would be Very much appreciated. Thank you.

Candy Posted - Apr 02 2013 : 03:36:42 PM Be patient with your little guy, he will come around. I have a glider that I think was teased with treats. She was so anxious every time I offered her something that she would grab with both hands AND lunge at the treat teeth first to get it. I think she though I was going to snatch it away. She drew blood when she missed the treat and got my fingers instead. It took quite a while but she finally learned that any treat I held up to her was HERS and she finally takes them very politely now. The vitamins for the BML recipe are available at most pet stores in the reptile section. Here is a link for them so you know what to look for, or you can order on line. SierraWeister Posted - Apr 02 2013 : 02:15:15 PM Wow Candy your babies are so gorgeous. Your pouches look great too. Im definatly going to buy one asap. i have a pouch but yours looks more stable. Although i cant keep chip in a pouch, he would rather sleep in my jacket in the pocket and in the hood, sometimes he goes down the back of my shirt. I choose the Bml diet, although im not sure where i can find the vitamins it needs or if i have the right ones and just dont know it. I dont feed him bugs but i am going to go out and bug millies, and crickets tonight to try out, and buy more fruits. Its really hard to figure out what he likes. I know he is warming up to me. i found out that he was abused and neglected by his previous owners. He is two years old. So it may take him longer. Thank you so much for showing me your sight.
Candy Posted - Apr 02 2013 : 12:24:25 PM Welcome to Glider parenthood. for future reference, if you post questions under the 'Sugar Glider' section of the forum you will have more folks see your posts and respond. There is a section called the Gliderpedia that will give you lots of tips on bonding. To start off, some gliders warm up more quickly than others. Some just take lots of patience. Gliders are very scent oriented. Cut a few pieces of fleece in small squares and either tuck them into your clothes for a day or sleep with them in your pillow case to get YOUR scent on them. Then put these in your glider's sleeping pouch to help him get used to your scent. When you approach his cage, talk to him quietly. Always talk to him before you open the cage door or before you touch his pouch. Offer a treat when you reach toward his pouch. You can drop a treat in and let him enjoy it in the safety of his pouch at first. Soon he will associate you talking to him with treats and begin to pop out of the pouch to get them or even come to the side of the cage when he hears your voice for a yummy treat. During the day, let your glider get several hours of undisturbed sleep before trying to handle or interact with him. Wait until the afternoon hours to carry him around. He will be friendlier if he has had some solid sleep rather than being disturbed frequently all morning long. I am NOT friendly when someone wakes me up repeatedly all night long. (ask my little dogs about that one) As for feeding him, there are many time tested recipes for glider staple mixtures that will meet your glider's needs for protein, vitamins and minerals especially calcium. These are fed with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables each night (except the BML feeding plan that allows only a few fruit choices and uses frozen mixed vegetables only). I have links to the information on these feeding plans on my web page to help you choose one that will work for you and your glider. http://www.gliderkids.com/contact.html look over the feeding plans and then you can ask specific questions about the ones you would like feed your glider. sleighr Posted - Apr 02 2013 : 12:03:52 AM There are lots of ideas to speed bonding along. As far as my experience it is mostly just time. it takes a lot of it. And you have to insist a little. gently dump him out of his pouch and snuggle up to him. Even knowing you are gonna annoy him and might get bit. Some socks or light gloves on the hands deflect teeth in a wonderful way. Happy Landings!
