Several animals die in pet store fire

By Mark Baker

The Register-Guard

What's New: Story

As many as 100 animals died in an early morning fire Friday at the Zany Zoo Pet Store on West 11th Avenue. Reptiles, birds and feeder mice were lost, said Nathan McClain, who owns the store with his wife, Abbie McClain.

“If insurance doesn’t cover this, there have been a lot of other terrible things we’ve faced and gotten through,” Nathan McClain said. The store was burglarized in August, and then flooded in September during a severe thunderstorm.

Very sad for all those animals!

What's with the tagline or whatever being "Several animals die.." when it then goes on to say "as many as 100"? Anyway.. poor babies.

Thanks! I didn't feel like they would do it for insurance and thought it was very sad that people were accusing them of purposefully killing animals for money. And the arguing going on on craigslist made me very sad too. I'm in Coos Bay/North Bend and never visited Zany Zoo, but I'm glad to hear support for them.

I live here in Eugene and have used Zany Zoo for years. Nate, Abby and their staff are all very knowledgeable of the animals they keep. They strive hard to take care of all of their animals, I could not believe for a second that they would have done anything for insurance purposes. Nate runs a Petting Zoo out of the store on weekends, to inform people about the proper care of several exotic animals that they have. Many of the animals in the petting zoo have been rescued by them and have cost Nate out of pocket. Something he rarely talks about, as he does it for the love of the animals. These animals are not for sale, but are cared for at Nate and Abby's personal expense. The petting zoo is free. I just wanted to share a bit since I am local and have known them for years. My heart goes out to them as do my prayers. I will post any updates I hear about.

So I guess like 95 of the 100 animals that died were feeder mice.. but still really sad. But what's even worse is the investigation going on saying it might be insurance fraud. =[ I don't think so though because they managed to get all the other animals in foster homes/rehomed. It's caused HUGE debates in the Eugene Pets section on Craigslist.
