It seems like all Ive done the past 3 years is take care of others. My Mom, Dad, Alan and my twin grandbabies. The past 3 years has been filled with my Dad's cancer, my Mom being ill, Alan's losing a job and then breaking his neck in a car wreck and premature twin grandbabies.

Most of the above have turned out well and I feel truly blessed.

So now Im doing something just for me. Tomorrow morning at 7:30am, I am having weight loss surgery. This is not a decision I took lightly and has been months in the making. Ive been on a clear liquid diet since November 1st which is not to lose weight before surgery, but to shrink the liver.

This is not about looks. Im very excited about getting my health back. If I get down and out, then I wont be any good to my family when they need me again. They are all very supportive of my decision.

If anyone has any questions regarding the surgery, I should be out of the hospital by Thursday or Friday. I will be more than glad to answer any questions, either here or privately.

Wish me luck! I'll see you all in a few days.

Awesome Rita! I was wondering how you were doing. I HATE head hunger.

ps - where are the pics?
Rita Posted - Apr 16 2010 : 01:25:52 PM
Thank you!

Nicole, you can do it! I had to go on a liquid diet for 16 days before my surgery (to shrink the liver). I had nothing but water, water with crystal light, protein shakes, chicken broth and more water. The first few days were pretty harsh - but after getting in to a routine - it was really ok. Again - you can do it!

Again, wonderful news! I feel like I sound like a broken record. But seriously, very proud of you. Head hunger is the worst, I suffer from that myself! I hate that stupid little voice that keeps saying you should eat something even though you KNOW you're not hungry.

Bye bye 81 pounds!!
Nicole87 Posted - Apr 16 2010 : 12:59:12 PM
Rita, I'm using you as an inspiration...I've been wanting to lose upwards of 60 pounds for some time now, and just started South Beach Diet yesterday. I don't know how I'm going to completely do without fruit/pasta/bread for 2 weeks, but I've got to do it! I can't imagine how much more confident you must feel 80 pounds lighter. Congratulations, keep up the good work!~
snusie Posted - Apr 16 2010 : 04:38:17 AM
Rita! I'm so proud of you. I know what you mean about head hunger, it's my worst enemy. Keep it up, girl, and keep it off.
Rita Posted - Apr 15 2010 : 09:47:23 PM
81 pounds of blubber - gone!

The head hunger is subsiding, thankfully! I eat something small about every 3 hours - which is working out very well.

Easter Sunday, my family and I went to Applebee's. I order chicken for dinner - and got 4 meals out of it. Im a cheap date!

I feel so much better, have so much more energy and am totally motivated to lose the remainder of my weight - which is around 40-50 pounds.

Thank you, Tisha! I dont have a lot to be happy about these days, so its really nice that I can at least be proud of myself over my weight loss. I see successes in so many ways - not just what the scale says.

But I have to admit, the last 3 months I have certainly had a lot of "head hunger". If my body would allow me to over eat, there is no doubt in my mind I would be doing it. Head hunger is the worst!

Again, thank you all for your support!

My friend did this a few years ago. She was on every drug imaginable. She couldn't even walk to the mailbox. In a few months she was off all but one drug and I dont think that one had to do with her weight. She was over 400 lbs before the surgery and the last I heard she was about 180 and she is quite tall. I think that is enough weight loss for her. She looks incredible. But more important than that she feels incredible and she is much healthier. I am glad she will be around a lot longer. She also took up a new hobby, as strange as this may seem. Cooking. We grew up in the south with all the grease and fat in our foods and she has learned a whole new way of cooking, healthy and tasty foods.

Good Luck to you.

I haven't written here for awhile so thought I would write a few lines.

Things are going very well. I feel so good and so healthy for the first time in many, many years. I can move a lot faster. I'm off all my medications - diabetes, cholesterol, etc. I am now able to get down on the floor and play with my twin grand babies - and then get up without crawling to the nearest chair so I could heave myself up off the floor. I can climb the very steep 3 flights of stairs up to the 3rd floor of our office building without having to stop every other step and gasp for breath with my face red from not being able to breath. Oh, the list of successes go on and on. I don't worry so much anymore about what the scale says and look for other ways to see success.

But since this WAS weight loss surgery, I guess I should tell you my grand total as of today. I have now lost 76 pounds!!!! And I now wear a size XL womens blouse (down from a tight 3X) and a size 14 (down from a size 22/24)in pants. My shoes are even to large for me now! I wore my under panties until the morning they literally fell off of me. When I purchased new ones - they were 5 sizes smaller than the ones I was wearing. Can we all sing "Pants on the ground"?

I feel so much better, I cant even begin to tell you.. I finally feel "normal" for the first time in years - and I am still far from being skinny. I would like to lose about 50 more pounds before I turn 60, which will be in 2 1/2 years. So, there is plenty of time for that.

I now eat about 1/2 a cup of food at a time and eat about every 3-4 hours. In the morning, I have a protein shake for breakfast. About 3 hours later, I have some yogurt. For lunch I normally have either 1/2 cup of some kind of soup I have made or an order of Taco Bell refried beans & cheese or maybe a slice of roast turkey breast with some colby jack cheese. Later, I will have a small container of flavored applesauce and for dinner - soup, refried beans, Boca Burgers (no bread) or talipia, shrimp or some other kind of fish.

Honestly, I like eating this way now. My taste buds have changed drastically. I still haven't had beef, port or bread or any of kind - cant have them for 4 more months. My thinking is - if I don't eat them for 7 months - why start? But we shall see.

Any, I didn't mean to talk your legs off. But I'm very proud of what Ive done. It hasn't been easy for me especially since Alan ended up in the hospital 3 weeks after my surgery. I wanted to stress eat so badly but my body wouldn't let me - and I didn't know where to go with my stress. So I did a lot of walking while he was in the hospital for 3 weeks.

But all is good, Im enjoying the compliments, looking for new clothes, being able to sit in a booth - Ohhhhh - so many things!

This is absolutely the best thing Ive ever done for myself! I will post pictures soon - I promise. I will even put the worst picture of me in the whole wide world which is the one where I am at my highest weight and look my worst - Im using it as my before picture!
Mom2MandG Posted - Feb 12 2010 : 12:55:30 PM
Rita that is just great news! I am very happy for you!!!!

BTW - did you find the mushroom soup? Everytime I remember to look somewhere they don't have it. It does sound very good!

Keep up the good work!

That's wonderful Rita! Congratulations!

IF you're comfortable with it, I'm sure we would love to see pictures! I was going to post that we wouldn't believe you without pictures but I don't want you to do it if it would make you uncomfortable or self-conscious in any way.

yay congrats!...my grandmother finally had her surgery 2 days ago im hoping she is doing alright she has sever diabetes so they wanted to keep her longer then normal and she is 4 hours away from home i hate it and she isnt conscious enough to talk on the phone yet but they did this microscopically and she doesnt have a very big incision site...but im happy to hear you are doing fine i also have a friend that went through this and she has lost 216 pounds she looks good and she ran for the first time in 12 years so this is great everyone is doing fine just keep taking care of yourself!
tisha Posted - Feb 12 2010 : 08:26:40 AM
That's amazing Rita!!!! I can imagine that it IS very hard to get out of those old clothes! What you need is to go onto 'What not to wear' and have them give you a whole new make over and wardrobe! They can teach you what fits! Not that you don't have any style, I wouldn't know.
suppressedtearz Posted - Feb 12 2010 : 01:45:51 AM
You sound like my Mom, Rita. My parents went on weight watchers over a year ago, and she dropped about 5 sizes. I've finally convinced her that we need to start an account at a nearby consignment shop and she's unloading all of her "fat" clothes there. It's so hard for me to get her into skinny clothes. LoL.

She wants to dress like an old lady, and I've just never seen my Mom as old. So I have to go shopping with her to keep her out of the old lady clothes. LoL.

Congratulations. I'm glad things are going well for you.

I hope things are going well with your family. <3

I feel great! Now I have to get the imagine of me at my heaviest out of my mind. I still want to wear those same clothes and everyday I go into work - the girls tell me not to wear things anymore - to put them in my give away pile. Im so glad they tell me as I really have no perception of how I look or what size I wear. I still see myself as being a much larger woman. Hopefully, that will go away soon.

I can kind of tell by my clothes. At my heaviest, I wore a size 22/24 pants and I am now in a size 16 - which will be to big for me very soon. But my brain doesnt believe I can fit into a size 16. Its really weird how my body battles my brain...
