So it turns out my new job is horrible. The first few weeks were okay, but now it seems everyone there has completely turned on me. I ask a question and my supervisor gives me major attitude. She rolls her eyes and snaps at me. My manager is an idiot. A week or two ago she called me into her office and basically said I am nothing like the person she interviewed, I'm way too slow at my job (I'm trying not to make mistakes), I'm a lump on a log and she's unsure I'm a good fit for the bank - and since I'm on probation she can fire me at will. Since then I've tried to speed up my work flow and I've made "critical" errors. Including cashing a fraudulent check. When I explain that my supervisor has not been guiding me or training me, my manager says she's "a gem" and correct work has to come from within myself. WTF does that even mean??? There is a new guy who started last week and he's the golden boy. I think he's slower than I ever was, but they are kissing his butt like he's the second coming. Additionally, these women will go into my manager's office and talk about me. At first I thought I was paranoid, until they started outright pointing at me and giggling. It just sucks. At this point I'm ready to go back to Macy's on my hands and knees and beg them to take my back. Luckily I didn't quit there, so I do still work there - only a few days a month though. I feel like such an idiot, being so excited about this job. I know you never know until you try - but I'm miserable. |

Sorry to hear this doug. I too recently started a job that I hate. All I can say is to do your best and keep your head down. Somebody there is probably real insecure and petty, one day they will show their true colors to the rest. |

Nobody wants to hear from a complainer. In the corporate world, the people higher than you will always have the trust of the higher-ups whereas you wont. You can only complain about things when you have proof or to perhaps suggest sources of improvement. If you want to make a corporate friend, point out how they can save some money. In the professional world if you complain out of emotion, then you are signing your fired notice. But if you have proof, video, petition, that some of the leaders of your branch are causing employees grief, then you have ammunition.

Doug, this is your chance to become a "player". These idiots have revealed their true colors to you and you can decide to let it get you down or let it get you motivated. Maybe you should keep your head down and do the job, but work to find some way to expose these people for the unprofessional fools that they are. Start getting to know people up the chain away from the branch and be the smart, helpful friendly person they want. Save your tongue on the gossip and wait until the time is right and you are armed.
If the job sucks just because of the people there, well you can always work to move elsewhere. If the job sucks because you dont like counting money all day and other things more specific, then move on. |

I'm so sorry, Doug! I hate things like that - where you get turned on by everyone!
I would say - kill them with kindness. Whenever I've had personal problems with work-mates, I've just decided that I'll be there longer than that person, and I've just made it a point to be super-cheerful and upbeat at work, no matter what. If you get criticized, pretend you are hearing "constructive criticism" and thank that person for the feed-back, rather than getting defensive. "Oh - I wasn't aware! Thank you. I'm anxious to get started on your suggestions. Could you please give me concrete and specific examples?"
For the record, telling someone they are "a lump on a log" is just such incredibly bad management! Ask her for coaching. Remember - ONLY MAKE "I" STATEMENTS! "I'm concerned that I'm not meeting expectations. Could you please take me under your supervision and give me some hands-on coaching, so that I can feel better about the way I'm doing my job?" |
