Would you like new vendors products to be checked by a neutral member of the GG board before they are allowed to place an ad on the board?

valkyriemom, I see what you are saying...but I wonder what action would a moderator take? Remove the whole posting? Tell them to give you your money back? Or would the moderator PM everyone responding to that seller's thread with your story? This is still assuming you tell the mod the truth, and the mod tells the seller the truth. I'm not saying you personally would lie but some people just aren't honest, or want to get something for nothing, yanno?

While I do always agree with "buyer beware" ...

This post almost directly contradicts the "stop being mean" thread on here.

If I buy from a vendor and am not satisfied, or if I see pictures of a vendor's items on here that don't looks safe, I'm going to post about it!

It isn't bashing. It isn't being mean. It is stating either facts, or my opinions about the quality of vended items.

If we had a moderator, I could make those comments privately to a mod, and the mod could take the appropriate action. It wouldn't be "mean". It would come from an objective, non-partial source.

The prospective buyers could be warned, and any safety disputes could take place in PM with the moderator, and no one would be accused of "being mean" just for observing unsafe products!

I have just pretty much adopted the whole ... I ONLY BUY FROM TOOTLES policy...lol That way I don't have to worry either way about it.

I think it boils down to buyer beware. I purchased a couple bonding pouches from tootles on here, but only after I'd seen other people happy with her work. I also have issues dealing with paypal and some of my cards being connected to an account that the email no longer exists to. So I PMed her, asked her what other manner she'd like payment in, and described what I wanted. We both come out of the deal happy.

A limit to 4-6 months of active posting would be a nightmare for the administration...do you allow them to post in classifieds at all? Or just not start their own topics? Because a new member is going to want to get on there and say, "Hey, like that pouch, can I get 3 of them?" Or, if blocked, from starting their own topics, will simply piggy-back off someone else posting things like, "I have sets too, check my ebay site here" and provide a link.

I like the sticky idea, of safe and unsafe toys, stitches, etc. Even a list of known hazards helps educate us all. But having to hassle to get back money and what not...there's really no way to do anything about it except protect yourself and go through a third party like paypal where you can have a dispute, and then warn others about that vendor, or buy only from well-known and well-regarded vendors.

I think that the buyer needs to be aware from whom they are buying; that is the responsibility of the buyer, NOT the moderators. I would be cautious in purchasing from someone who only had three posts if I couldn't substantiate a clear history of ethical sales through another source, such as eBay feedback. Hey, you even take that chance if you buy something on another sales venue, such as eBay or Critterbin! And, one would still have to jump through the same hoops, unfortunately, if what happened to Glider Mommy happened on either of those sales sites.

What several folks here are talking about, with moderators scrutinzing every single item for safety, and every single seller for ethical sales history, would require an expensive infrastructure, and would put an unfair and time-consuming burden on moderators.

It bears mentioning that this site is already moderated, or the classifieds would be full of all kinds of things that I, for one, would NOT want to see, such as porn links, etc.

To quote Eric's earlier post, this is neither trivial nor easy.

Let a vendor's work and reputation speak for itself.

I've been a suggie mom with very healthy gliders (11 of them in four huge cages) for three years now. I am an honest, responsible person who does nice quality work. This has been proven by several happy customers on this forum, as well as eBay. I have made all of my own bedding for my suggies over the past three years. I have lurked on this forum for a few years, simply because I was working full-time outside of my house 45-60 hours per week in a social service capacity in addition to taking care of my suggies and family...I just read, and didn't really feel that I had much I wanted or needed to say until recently. And, honestly, I didn't have the time. I didn't have the time to read all of the time, or reply. However, I appreciated learning more about these wonderful animals on Glider Gossip whenever I had the opportunity.

I've made great stuff for my own suggies for years. Now that I am able to take a breather from my lifelong career for awhile, I am having fun creating nice items for others. I didn't join Glider Gossip to do this.

It's my opinion that vendors need to supply pics of their work, if they're making toys and bedding for suggies. I think that one solution to the problem may be a "sticky" thread, as Eric has made for other important topics, with some of our ideas of what safe items for suggies might look like--for example, when Rita brought up the toys parts warning, and when there was discussion about using the smallest stitching size for items. I know that we absolutely cannot anticipate every possible accident that suggies might have. I think that it is up to the buyer to be aware, and for those of us who see something questionable to respectfully attempt to address it with vendor.

Anyhow, no disrespect to anyone is intended. I felt the need to have my position about all of this voiced, that's all.

Well because we have NO WAY of knowing anything about these new members/vendors. They might not be honest... like a that one vendor that I ordered from and never received my product. I had to go through all that trouble of posting a disputer/claim with paypal. It was a pain... guess how many posts they had... 3. They were a NEW member. Under the guideline I suggested they would NEVER have been allowed to post a classifieds ad. Forgive me if I don't like to take chances with my money.
Goddessbaby Posted - May 20 2009 : 09:27:10 PM
but what happens when you have someone test an item that turns out to be unsafe or the glider has a "freak accident"? you can never be too sure. If the classifieds was moderated, I do think there would be less scamming and a sticky of glider safe, toys seems like a good idea so at least when people decide to make things, they know whats not okay.
trigger Posted - May 20 2009 : 08:51:38 PM
I feel testing products is very important. I think a tester should be not only an owner, but also have vast sewing experience.

I send my products to a rescue home for testing before I offer them to the public.

For me this accomplishes two things:
1. I will know a product is safe before selling it
2. I donate to a rescue home & help gliders by providing extra cage sets & toys.

I agree. I know I only buy from people who I have seen good reports on from others, but that also makes it harder on a new vendor trying to get up and going.
glider_mommy Posted - May 20 2009 : 01:57:32 PM
One criteria I think there should be is that any potential vendor should have to be an ACTIVE member for atleast 4 - 6 months before they are aloud to be a vendor in the classifieds. BUT that is just my opinion.
Rita Posted - May 19 2009 : 02:04:09 PM
I'm not talking about actual testing on our gliders. What I mean is having someone with long term experience be sent an item to be checked out by the owner. You can tell a lot when you have a product in your hand that you cant see in a picture. You can see the stitching, if there are threads, if there are unsafe toy parts, etc.

I also agree. I agree nobodies glider should do the testing for whether or not it is safe, but I have seen many post where pics have been posted and something can be pointed out. So maybe some of the moderation can be done on pics. Also maybe we can also do more of what Rita has done. If we have experience on something we know is unsafe we can post about our experience as a fyi.

Just thinking out loud, do we then blame the moderator when someone's glider has an accident? And do we use real guinea pigs or just someone's unfortunate gliders pretending to be guinea pigs? Just exactly how does one "test" something for "glider safety?"

I think there is a good idea here somewhere, but I also don't think something like this is trivial or easy.
our2girlz Posted - May 15 2009 : 02:08:57 PM
I think having it moderated is a good idea.
Rita Posted - May 15 2009 : 01:59:39 PM
There are many vendors who make new toys and then give them to some of their glider owning friends for tried and true testing before placing them in the Product Classifieds sections of the forums. Im NOT talking about giving them to another brand new glider owners, either. They have to get several people who have had gliders for awhile and are knowledgeable enough to do the testing.

Sorry, but I do not purchase things from brand new glider owners who decide to make and sell glider related items. Its just not safe.

I also have no problems with the Classified sections being moderated.

I don't think a mod for the classifieds is a bad idea at all
suggieluvr Posted - May 15 2009 : 12:52:33 PM
I wouldn't want to be the one to test it to see if it were safe or not. I try and stick to what I know and what has worked for others so there are no injuries to my gliders.
Anonymous Posted - May 15 2009 : 11:44:52 AM
Other boards tried to do it. My main concern is the classified ad section. I was hoping there could be a mod that would control the Ad's and be the one to say an ad is good or not. Just a thought to help the community.
kyro298 Posted - May 15 2009 : 11:16:01 AM
So kind of like a compliance thing? I see what you're getting at but am not sure how it would be possible for every product to go through one person or how you could control this. Do you know if other boards do that? If so, how do they go about it?
our2girlz Posted - May 15 2009 : 11:00:28 AM
i feel i am nuetral on this as weel but my other feelings are if you feel something is unsafe for your babies dont buy it.
Anonymous Posted - May 15 2009 : 10:03:36 AM
Well I am still working on that question but if it was something avaliable to the community would it be something that they like to have. Maybe it's a community vote as to who would be the product tester.
kyro298 Posted - May 15 2009 : 09:20:59 AM
What would be considered neutral and how would someone be considered qualified? I guess it seems like kind of a weird question.
