Hey guys. I have been busy with life and havent spent much time lately on development initiatives for the web site. It seems to me that many of you would like me to add the Facebook LIKE button on forum posts. So I have a few questions to discuss.

Would you like the LIKE button on forum posts?

Should it be for the entire thread, like up top, or one for each reply?

How about on other content such as Journal, Photos, Gliderpedia...?

Are there any other social media I should look to add? +1, Twadder..?

What other short term initiatives should we look at to make for a better experience here?

Are you talking just for our posts as far as icon size and what not? I'd be happy to throw some stuff together in PS if it'll help.. I'm a bit busy with job hunting but.. NO job means I do have some time. LOL

Any way to get a bit better size on the user icons, maybe a better quality, too?
Kozi Posted - Mar 07 2012 : 07:42:52 PM
Ah, I wasn't sure, Doug and Katie were both in chat wondering about it as well since it would be an easy way to display our real names or a link to something.

Eric posted this a long time ago in the "Suggestion Box" thread so not sure if he's changed his mind. That was in 2008 though!:

As for signatures, that used to be an option, and it's gone because in a decision between usefullness and abuse, abuse won, so the signatures are gone. As an aside, I also think excessively large signatures really detract from the forum. On other forums, in a given discussion, 90% of the page is signature and 10% is actuall conversation. I don't think that serves the purpose of a forum properly. I also don't know people's real names, so I just use the nick name people pick. My brain can't keep track of two names per one person. If anything were to change in the future, signatures would end up being limited, such as just a one liner with no images.

I know that Slashdot has recently removed the ability to like or share comments. Wonder why?

Yeah, it should advertise for you. If someone doesn't wanna share they'll just like it(easier/faster) and it'll show on their stream/wall that they liked it, so it could bring their friends/viewers here, too.

Late here - of course (story of my life)

IMO we need a like and a dislike.

And yes, for the reasons stated. It would save people from having to restate information given previously, or posting "I agree with Kylah."

I do NOT think it needs to be linked to FB at all. I am pretty selective about what I "share" on my FB wall. So - I dislike the idea that "Share" would replace 'like'

I've also found FB not having a dislike button to be awkward. Sometimes you just want to show someone some solidarity - "My glider is biting. Just needed to vent." I wouldn't want to "Like" that post. But checking a "Dislike" button would give me an "I hear you." option we don't currently have.

A like button would be great. I really like the thumbs up or thumbs down idea better though.

If someone is doing something really bad and are trying to give bad information, then the thumbs down could be a warning to others that it is not an acceptable idea.

I think it would be best for each post, that way if one person gives good information you can thumbs up, and if its bad or unacceptable information you can thumbs down.

Just my opinion though.

+1 and Twitter are great. I'd like to be able to FOLLOW a thread and get emails or notifications when someone has commented on the thread. If it's a busy thread, I'd like the option to get a "daily digest" of the posts within the last 24 hours. It could update every day at 7pm or something. That's just a random number. IDK
LizGirl Posted - Feb 18 2012 : 11:57:32 PM
I think that one must be logged in inorder to like/dislike a post and also that they should be limited to liking/disliking a post to one time. That way it would discourage bullying and spamming a post/poster.

I know the Craigslist forums use a number system. You can give a -5 to a post you find vile or +5 to a post you love. You have to be logged in and you can only rate it once with a scale of -5 to 5. You also have a cap. At first you only have 10 points to distribute and the longer you are a member, the more points you get. I think this is to discourage people from making multiple accounts for a mere 10 points.

I do not recommend the point system. It makes for easy bullying in my opinion, but if people want like buttons, logging in and one "thumb" per post is a good way to go. And if you remember, Facebook did not keep the thumbs down very long, must have been a reason or two
shadow Posted - Feb 18 2012 : 11:05:14 PM
well i kinda like the idea of a thumbs down option. but i think the post count needs to be a lot higher for it like 500 or more. it would just help decrease the chances of it being abused. flagging is good but sometimes the post isnt bad enough that it needs to be removed or that it needs to be flagged. it would just be a little warning to others that its not the best post without having to read through the thread.
and keep the thumbs up button at 50 or 100 post
kazko Posted - Feb 18 2012 : 10:12:44 PM
How about a thumbs-up only with count? Does one really want a thumbs-down? In the end the flagging system probably takes care of that eh?
Kozi Posted - Feb 18 2012 : 05:28:19 PM
-- Shadow's idea. A minimum post count to use this, if we could? Maybe 50, 100? Like posting anon.

Thumbs up and thumbs down would be great, anon or not, specifics could be worked out later. That sounds like a WONDERFUL start!
shadow Posted - Feb 18 2012 : 05:18:32 PM
www.huffingtonpost.com/ this is the closest thing i could think of. in their comments you can fan or favorite comments. if the best you can do is anon then thats fine but it would be good if we could see who is liking stuff. it doesnt have to be connected to facebook at all.

Well, so far I think the Facebook LIKE button can be only one per topic. So for instance, if there was a flame about a mill breeder, but you agreed to a followup to it, you'd be liking the entire thread, not just the followup.

Can someone point me to a forum or a site where comments actually have individual likes? I havent found it.

My question for you is; Do you really need the LIKE button with all of the frufru interaction like Number of others who liked it and folks in your network who liked it, or is the SHARE button good enough?

I think we really wanted a like button so we could show others how many other people agree with that post rather than having to continue reiterating that it IS a good idea/post or that the OP should follow the advice. I'd assume they would realize it's a good post/suggestion/advice based on how many people liked/agreed with it.

*LIKE* LOL
yeah everything that kozi just said and it would be nice to see who liked it. maybe if we did that people wont feel attacked when 4 people in a row say basically the same thing.
