First off my gliders are doing great. Saturday morning I was getting off work and my wife called. She was on her way to work and had some bad news for me. We have you could say three dogs. Emily a yorkie/dashound mix, Max and Irish setter my sons dog, and Sammy a Jack russel and chihuahua mix. Sammy and Max we have had since they were about 6-7 weeks old, they grew up together. They are both about 1 12 years old. Well my wife took them out Friday night and they were running like wild indians. The next thing she heard was Sammy squeeling and barking. My son Mark went out and got him. His leg was messed up. So she told me it looks broken. Sammy is only abuout 10 lbs if that. When I got home, yes it was broken. I took him to the vet Saturday and they tried to reduce it, it didn't work. He broke it right at the Radius and Ulna and the wrist joint. The vet said because of where it is broken at he will never be the same and have a hard time walking. Even if he did surgery which would be about 2000-2500 it still might not work. We brought him home and spoiled him the rest of the week end. The main vet, the owner is a friend of mine was on vacation last week. Today he looked over the x-rays and gave my wife the bad news. So today I have to make a decision. This just sucks. |

Poor Sammy. By the time all is said and done, he'll have forgotten how to run and play with a friend...yea, right. |
THEHYLAND Posted - May 23 2012 : 10:28:06 AM
So far Sammy is doing great. He is still limping but give it time. Sammy just dosn't know how to relax, he is on the go go go. Max is still at the other house so in a week or so we will bring him back. |

Not to mention the sensation is probably heightened in it. Probably still feels like it's broken. He'll be fine once he puts more and more weight on it. So glad the leg didn't atrophy or the tendons shorten.quote: Originally posted by THEHYLAND
He is using it little by little. The vet said it will take a week or so for him to get full range of motion back. He needs to work the musceles and tendons.

That is the best news! So glad you didn't amputate after all. I remember how it hurt when I broke my leg. Did he get right back up on it or just ease into it? |

OH man! This is AWESOME NEWS!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! |
THEHYLAND Posted - May 17 2012 : 09:29:30 AM
OK, Good news, took him to the vet yesterday. They took the cast off, the vet said it healed fine. We left the cast on for an extra two weeks just to be safe. Him and Max play way to rough. So we got home with Sammy and then too Max to the other house. That way Sammy can work into walking on his foot/leg before Max mess with him. The rest of the day Sammy followed somebody around, he just dosen't rest/relax, got to be going or with someone. |

I hope everything goes well for the little booger! I know this waiting game has to be hard for you guys. Crossing my fingers! |
THEHYLAND Posted - May 10 2012 : 04:41:23 PM
To pin it is 2000. and the area that is broke is not big enough to pin. He broke it right at the base of the radius and ulna. We should know more on Weds. next week |
Omis n Kais g-ma Posted - May 06 2012 : 12:13:36 PM
Can they just rod his leg? Or put pins? I bet it is healing incorrectly and they'll have to re-break it and do something. |
THEHYLAND Posted - May 05 2012 : 11:15:22 AM
No update. He still has on the splint. Plan on taking him in next week for x-ray and exam. I would feel better if he kept the splint on for another 3-4 weeks. He just will not rest and once the splint comes off I'm afraid him and Max will play way to hard and his poor little leg will snap. The plan is when the splint comes off is to take Max to the other house for a couple of weeks, that way Sammy can use it without Max messing with him. Keeping my fingers cross and praying for great results. |

I decided to have his leg amputated when the bone got infected. It never really bothered him. And now he can even jump again. He is doing really good. We watch his weight so he doesn't get to heavy as that would cause problems. He still plays and runs and jumps. He doesn't get very much unsupervised time outside with our big dog anymore. Even though it was just an accident. I can't imagine what he would be like with 2 legs so I rather just keep an eye on him. :) Also it may help you to see this dog. Her name is Hope and even though she was born like this, it may give you some inspiration!

He should learn how to evenly distribute the weight amongst 3 legs. I'd think anyway. |

We will pray for him and the rest of the family. This is so hard to take, hang in there |

Up date. The second week leg still the same. Third week still the same. So we let it go for two weeks, he goes back to the vet sometime next week. The vet said if it not healing we should make a decision. Amp will cost about 1000+. The problem is he has long skinny legs. He was using four when one broke. With only three there is alot more stress to the other front leg, which might not take as much to break. If the leg appears to be healing we will keep splinting it. the problem is he still keeps playing with Max just as if he has no broken bones. He is a tough little guy. |

Amputation isn't as easy to recover from either, been there done that:( Good luck! |

Having 3 legs has slowed my dog down some only because my yorkie poo thinks her back leg is a chicken bone and takes her out by knocking it out from under her faster than she can get away from him. And she hasn't figured out how to jump back up on the couch yet because of that missing back leg either.
I think missing a front leg would be much easier to adapt with than my dog's missing back leg.
Good to hear Lisa that Chulo lived a long life, just sorry that so many kids on bikes had to learn how to peddle faster though because of him. LOL |

Sherri, speaking of three legged dogs and running... When I was a kid, there was a family down the street that had a dog with three legs. His name was Chulo which I think means cute in Spanish. I assure you there was nothing cute or chulo about this dog. Every time we rode our bikes, he chased us like a dog with four legs. Jerry, dogs with three legs can live a long happy life. Chulo or rather the three l;egged dog as we called him lived many, many years running on the street that I'm pretty sure he lost his leg to. quote: Originally posted by newby
I'm so sorry for your little buddy. (((hugs)))
My chi got hit by a car a year and a half ago and her knee was able to do a complete 360 degree's. The vet said that she coupld repair it but she may need future surgeries and get painful arthritis in it later on down the road.
With my vet and I discussing it, we both felt that it would be better to just take the leg. She healed just fine and is just as active as she was before (although a little slower about it) and I am happy with the decision that we made. No future surgeries AND no arthritis in that leg from it.
I really hope that you guys can come to an agreement that will be what is best for your little boy! Again I am so sorry to hear about his injury. But he can live a long happy life minus that one leg.

Jerry, they don't feel it's necessary to amputate it? |
THEHYLAND Posted - Mar 18 2012 : 02:36:03 PM
Took him to the vet yesterday. Leg is still flopping. They said it would still after only a week. They resplinted it. So for now it's a waiting game. Thanks for all of everybodys thoughts. |

Poor baby. Hope all turns out okay. Whatever you decide. Don't know what I'd do if this happened to my dog. My heart goes out to you. |
