There does seem to be an uptick in listings all over the Internet of sugar gliders for sale in a highly sketchy manner. A true modern day person will not let themselves be taken by scams like these but it never hurts to share what to look for as some people may simply not be aware that there are others out there willing to take your money from you.

Please share some things you think others need to look out for before sending money to some distant island to ship in animals.

Here are mine as I can recall:

Dont send money out of the country or to an island.

Dont fall for sob, extended or complicated stories. Most folks simply list something for sale and that's it. Long stories start to scream scam.

There is no substitute for doing an in-person exchange.

Buy locally.

Roadtrip to pick up your new animals no matter how far. If you really cant manage this, you really dont need to be having animals in the first place.

Ask around to see if anyone else has dealt with this person.

Look for post count in forums.

Buyer beware.

If it seems too good to be true, it is.

Don't be greedy.

Get your animals from a sanctuary, shelter, rescue that has a history.

Take your time. If you are in a hurry, you are not ready for animals.

Another scammer is vannesacorks@yahoo.com. I don't know if 'she/he' is still doing it, but they were active last year. Everything sounds OK until you get the 'no you can't pick them up' (she's 'in Colorado') and the money transfer is through Western Union money transfer, the home of scammers.

Any email that asks you for every detail about yourself is probably a scam (identity fraud).

Any email with 'god bless' sounds like Nigerian or some other African country scammers. That's sad, that they'd use the Lord's name as they attempt to scam money out of you.

When I bought my glider, me and the seller (a very kind woman) first emailed for about a week, then exchanged numbers and texted for a few more days, and met in person. Safest way and best way I think possible. But somebody posted that improper grammar is a red flag. I disagree, because my seller used texting laguage (ur instead of your, etc) but she was real, and very kind. Some people just like making spelling simpler

Scammers posted on CL in Flagstaff! free gliders... Wanna make sure they go to a good home.... 180 bucks delivery... Richmond VA this time. Asked for my info, and I asked what service they were going to use to ship and how they could promise 180 bucks delivery to my house out in the sticks. They broke it off. They were working my daughter and me at the same time! When daughter said she wanted to pick the gliders up, the scammer broke off.
When I first contacted these folk, I was mostly concerned about the gliders being snake chow... I really did not care about having a couplemore greys. as the conversation progressed it was obvious there were no gliders involved.... only air. Watch your back!
Happy Landings.

I am so glad my mum turned me onto this. I was just about to be scammed.
She sent me a scam from 2012 and it read almost exactly like the email I had just received. I figured I would give you guys an update.

The email address is glidersfly30@gmail.com

Hi

All sounds well and its nice reading from you and sorry for the late reply.
Yes I do have sugar gliders.I am having 2 male and 2 female sugar gliders for re homing,as they
socialized well with each other.Their temperament is Good, they are play full with, kids and other pets.
They are more comfortable with toys as this prevent them from getting bored. They
are health Guaranteed .
They are up to date on all shots/deworming.
They will be Delivered with their health papers along side vet records. They are called Max,Fred,Velma and Kiki
Max and Velma and brother and sister.while Kiki and Fred are twins
Here are some attached pictures of the sugar gliders.

I am actually giving out these sugar gliders because they belonged to my daughter(Jenner) but with a heavy heart i lost Jenner and she was all i got ,i work with a global,broad-based health care Company Devoted to Discovering New Medicines, New technologies
and new ways to Manage Health.Jenner died in an Accident last 6 weeks on her way back from
her piano classes and i have very bad memories when
i see these sugar gliders around me,because they were always together with her since i am always busy in the laboratory.
I really need to give them to someone who can really care and love them just the way Jenner used to,as Max,Fred,Velma and Kiki has been very lonely since Jenner passed away so the best thing i decided on as my colleague advised me was to send them to a loving home .

I really count on you if you can be there for these sugar gliders.I will Deliver them to you .
Please may i also ask you a few Questions?
Where are you base?
Are you a breeder?
Do you have kids?
Can you also promise that you will take good care them?
How soon are you ready to have them home?
Which of them are you ready for?

At least with this information,I will get to know better where they will be going to .I just hope you will love them.
I will also like you to promise me that you will always send
pictures to me monthly so that I can see how they are doing in
your home.I will be waiting for your mail.

Thanks

There were even pictures! I'm a little upset now, because those gliders looked simply adorable.

wow, i look at that scam info that i posted over a year ago.... i have learned sooo much in this past year. i can understand overcharging for gliders, but i just don't get the advertising and not even having them. i guess to just get the money and run. so glad that i didn't fall victim. i have a sweet family of 13 gliders now, from all over, all different reasons that they have come to me. and some born here.
glad everyone looks out for each other.

here's the email i got concerning the listing (same email from same person, different cities)
i know it has to be fake, no one microchips or vacinates gliders, do they?
They are still available and ready to go for a new home.I have 5 sugar gliders. They are home raised, vet checked and will come with all papers needed. In placing this gliders up for adoption,am looking for reasonable, knowledgeable and cautious person who can offer them tenderness, nursery with lots of love kisses and hugs.I am not out to look for money by selling my babies but all i need is just a caring and loving forever home for my babies where they will be well loved and spoiled to rotten ..... .These adorable, cute and gorgeous gliders are 11 weeks 4days old and will be the perfect match for your family. They will be the best playmate you've ever dreamed of.With their great personality & good temperaments with kids and other pets, they will be the once to steal your heart. They will be coming along with their vet records with lots of play toys. You have nothing to worry about because i will also enclose their hand book & feeding menu to their package. Promise me that you will shower them or one of them with lots of TLC ..And i will never like my baby to end up in a shelter or rescue, feel free to mail me if you are willing to get them or one.I will like to ask you some few questions if you do not mind.

1:Where are you located(Mr/Mrs)?
2:Do you have kids.if yes are they going to take good care of the gliders?
3:Are you a breeder?
4:Do you have experience in breeding gliders?
5:How soon do you need them?
6:How many gliders will you like to adopt? Identify sex of gliders you wanna adopt.

Sorry for asking so much questions but i am just trying to look for a good and loving home for my babies. Am giving them out because i just moved into a new and non pet apartment so am desperate in getting them re-homed in any part of USA since they all have approved shipping papers and traveling crates. One will go at an adoption fee of $180 with traveling cage since i will be shipping them to any interested person from Maryland where i live, 2 will cost $360 & so on depending on the amount you wanna adopt.

Sugar gliders also come with the following papers;

# Health guarantee
# Vaccine record
# Microchip Registration
# Pedigree
# Nutrition supplement
# Traveling Crate

Funny- that is EXACTLY the same message you get when you inquire about other scammed animals. Be it a parrot or a cat or a dog .... the EXACT same email, only the species has been changed.

Witchcraft is also a correct name, one can be Wiccan without being a witch and vice versa. I practice the craft but am not Wiccan.
Please do post who did the scam, I'm thinking about getting a third baby in the next year or so and REALLY don't wanna be scammed :D

I saw that same ad on hoobly when I first started looking for a breeding pair in 2012, I am glad I trusted my gut and realized they were a scam. I was planning on driving to pick up my pair, wherever they were so I told them I wanted their information so I could pick them up, also told them I wanted their phone number so I could call them, never could get a response back. So I would suggest to get them to prove that they are reputable. Anyone that is, will be able to prove it.
julieee9473 Posted - Jan 18 2013 : 02:46:40 AM
I'm Wiccan as well. It truly changed my life for the better. =)
ILoveLucy Posted - Jan 17 2013 : 10:59:25 PM
Not personally a Wiccan... But I do have a great respect for their beliefs & practices! It has been something that has always interested me, and would love to learn more about :)
shadow Posted - Jan 17 2013 : 10:07:48 PM
YAYY you know the proper name for it!! :D i've been a wiccan for 10 years.

redheadedpossum -you should include the name of the breeder so that people know who to avoid.
Lola03 Posted - Jan 17 2013 : 02:26:14 AM
Wow I read the thread. I had many of these different scams so glad I found my babies on Craigslist and drove to see the living conditions before I handed any money over. So sorry to those who have been scammed.
Lola03 Posted - Jan 17 2013 : 02:09:06 AM
I got the same Cameroon person a while back. After I asked if I could make the trip to pick up because I wasn't paying anything until I interacted with them I just got smart ads emails saying when was I coming but still had no address!!!!
julieee9473 Posted - Jan 16 2013 : 10:08:43 PM
^^^ Agreed, what does it matter if she was Wiccan or Pagan?
Religion is religion. It has nothing to do with her crappy breeding style.
shadow Posted - Jan 16 2013 : 10:05:03 PM
why is it important that we know she practiced "witch craft"?
redheadedpossum Posted - Jan 16 2013 : 09:57:05 PM
ALSO!!!!!!!!

Look up the breeder name and phone number on the internet. I saw a breeder in my area, and she had 3 violation on her USDA. I did more to find she practices witch craft and was caught selling joeys at 6 weeks and under. Glad I looked her up!

Recently, I posted an ad that I was looking for sugar gliders to adopt. And I got a message from someone named David Cooper. He offered to allow me to adopt one from his family as long as we drove to his location - which is three hours away.
I am just wondering if this is a scam....
Peregrinecourt Posted - Nov 17 2012 : 05:03:24 PM
Another one I think is pamelacharles@ yahoo.com. Originally it said she was in Missouri then turns out Cameroon. Now she says they are free but shipping of course will cost 200 to my door. I think she is a scam. Watch out!
arianaabc123 Posted - Nov 01 2012 : 03:47:24 PM
@Lottie Star
jut give them time to settle and take it slowly and if you need to when you put your hand in the cage for them to see you are no threat wear gloves.

I saw a very similar craigslist ad. It made me very weary too since the photo was the main photo that comes up on google.
GliderLove94 Posted - Oct 30 2012 : 08:07:47 PM
I have a user off of Craigslist try to scam me. The listing had a picture of a Cremeino sugar glider. I later saw it on Google and it belonged to someone else. It didn't include a price. The first message I got back said they were moving and weren't going to charge anything and just really needed to get it into a home. I got a message after that that had pictures of several sugar gliders that were free and you just needed to pay for shipping.

I would never purchase a glider from someone you can't meet in person. And never go alone.
ilovemysuggiegliderbaby Posted - Oct 20 2012 : 03:29:45 PM
When I was first looking to buy a sugar glider I got emailed by at least 3 people who wanted me to wire money to Western Union. They would act all sweet and seem legit until they would ask for my information and to wire money. One "woman" said she wanted me to just donate money to an orphanage, and she had an entire story planned out. I was buying into it until she wanted me to transfer the money through Western Union. HUGE SCAM. She seemed so kind, and at the end of every message she would say "God bless you." The other 2 just got to the point and asked for me to transfer the money through Western Union.

However, my first suggie baby that I bought 1 week and 1/2 ago I thought was just too good to be true, but it was true! :) I bought Mimzy (my suggie) for $100. The girl threw in her large cage, toys, pouches, hammock, pee pads, food, water bottle, food bowl, and wheel along with her for just $100!! I had to drive 4 hours to pick up my baby, but it was an amazing price. The girl simply couldn't take care of her anymore. Mimzy is a very sweet baby, and we are on the bonding path.

Don't always infer that a person is just trying to scam you. Have faith, but be careful.

I was just a victim of scamming today, luckily I figured it out before I sent money. The woman said that she was honeymooning in florida when she found out that she's pregnant and decided to stay. She said she was willing to give her glider for free to a good home and after getting my address, she asked for $180. Every time I asked if I could just drive down to pick up the glider, she made an excuse. I don't want one shipped. It seems cruel. The whole story was fishy but I got too excited...so if anybody gets that story then it is a scam! They called their fake glider Titi.

I would preferably like to get two from a rescue, so if anybody knows of one please let me know!

I was almost scammed on my birthday by a person under the name "Gliders Lover". They could barely speak english, and refused to let me pick them up, insisting on shipping them. I told her I felt uncomfortable so she said she felt offended I didn't trust her and forget about it. I later found her e-mail under a scam list. She is also posting the same ad (with the Wikipedia picture for a sugar glider)on Craigslist under all different cities in all different states. So yeah. Here's the e-mail just incase. gliderslover@yahoo.com... There's also a FaceBook page I believe... -__-

Most breeders will state they don't guarantee temperament. Babies are being pulled from parents, moved to a new home, etc. It is very jarring for them, and it isn't unheard of for temperament to completely change.
