I understand its overwhelming, we were all overwhelmed by one thing or another when we first got gliders too.
I've worked with many people who are either rehoming gliders or taking in rehomed gliders in the last few years. Personally I have several that were rehomed or surrendered to me for various reasons. Most often its due to time or money or vet care.
Sometimes people (much like you ) THINK they need to rehome the gliders because of someone else's opinion, when in reality they really don't want to rehome them at all. Most people would be happy to just let them rehome them simply because you are contemplating it. I'm not one of those people.
If the gliders are healthy, happy and thriving with you and your family...... and your family loves them and are doing your best to care and provide for them KEEP THEM.
I would muchhhhh rather see you keep those babies and add a family cat than rehome them.
Why? there are so many gliders being bounced around from owner to owner to owner to owner. Some never find their forever home, never find that one person who takes the time to work through what ever issue the gliders have. It can be a very sad cycle. Even when you believe you rehomed to someone that will take great care of them, it might not be permanent.
Just yesterday, my friend that also works with rescues and surrenders got two gliders back that she adopted out over a year ago to a vet tech. The vet tech ignored the contract and rehomed them to someone else who didn't know how to care for them properly. Who then also tried to rehome them again. My friend got them back from the 2nd home before they had a chance to rehome them. Both gliders were severely dehydrated and one may not pull through.
Now this isn't meant to scare you by any means, this is meant to show you that even rehoming to a vet tech who should be responsible enough to comply with the contract ( which is legally binding and enforceable ) and return them to my friend, or in the very least find them a suitable home... didn't end happily.
I know the lengths my friend goes to before adopting out gliders, she could not have known this would be the outcome of that adoption.
It happens, and it happens a lot more than the average glider owner sees despite the amount of time and energy we put in to try and prevent it.
I'm sharing this with you so you understand why I feel the way I do. If a family cat is the only reason you are debating on rehoming them, because a couple of vets and a few other people "think you should"
For me, that's not enough and I'd rather tell you it's ok to have other pets ( which it absolutely is ) Personally I say keep em and get your cat and make sure you make the living space a safe as you can.
Now if you still decide to rehome them, that is entirely up to you! But please only rehome them for your OWN reason, not anyone else's. Those other people aren't the ones that have to say goodbye to a part of the family. Those other people aren't going to wonder how they are doing in their new home, if they are cared for, if they are healthy, if they got rehomed again... Those other people shouldn't be making decisions for you and your family pets. Those decisions are for you to make based on your own reasons and abilities.

I don't own any other pets besides gliders..... however, LOTS of other people do. Cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, snakes. hedgies etc
Some have their glider cages in a room they can close the door to prevent other pets from bothering the gliders and others don't.
Is it wise to intentionally let them interact ( out of the cage )... no not in my opinion. But that doesn't mean you can't have other pets 
It just means you do what you can to make it a safer environment, like making sure the cage is secure and the gliders can't get out, out of cage time in a tent or secure bonding bag, keep the door closed to the room the gliders are in , use pet gates if the door doesn't close.
Talk to some sewing vendors about making a cage cover that will prevent cats paws around the bottom sides back and top. I know Marie Peck made one for someone to prevent her cats from bothering the gliders in the cage.
There is a pet mesh we use on bonding bags you could make a cage skirt out of to prevent cat paws around the bottom of the cage...
Personally, I think it would be a shame for you to surrender or rehome your gliders simply because you also happen to want a cat. There probably are people that would disagree with me  that is normal in the glider community.
Are there horror stories of glider injuries from cats... a couple. But there are more stories about people that own a variety of other pets as well as gliders with no issues what so ever.
The biggest issue people in the community have with cats is bacteria from their claws/scratches and bites. It can be an aggressive infection and difficult to treat, but it can also be successfully treated and doesn't always mean certain death to the glider like some people make it sound.
The second issue isn't about the cat as much as it is about the cat litter box. Gliders can get sick IF they get into the litter box, I can't remember what it's called off hand but there is a medical term for it. So make sure the litter box isn't in the same room as the gliders, if the gliders happen to get out of their cage ( and it might happen no matter how careful you are ) If the litter box is in the bathroom make sure to remove it if you use the bathroom for out of cage time.
To me you sound like a responsible pet owner that loves your gliders and you want what is best for them if they are bonded to you, you are probably what is best for them, just use common sense to make it a safe environment for all of your pets and don't let other peoples opinion's freak you out ( including vets)

The reason I wanted to meet some of you is because I got myself in a bit of a pickle! I have two awesome babies! Rocco and Oona, who have bonded with me and my family.
We lost out 3 year old cat to kidney failure 5 months ago. It about killed us all and my children age 6 and 8 were crushed. I have been working with a waiting list at my breeder and we really were missing someone to love on.
I researched and thought that the gliders would be a great fit! And they are and have been so fun. The kids just love them! Here is where it gets terrible. I have been told now from several sources including 2 vets, that I would be very foolish to mix the gliders with a indoor cat. I’m sure this isn’t new news to you, but it sure was to me! I was told it was a good fit when we were first thinking about having Rocco and Oona. I can’t really see how I could keep kitty paws off of the cage, and I don’t want to lock up the gliders obviously , and can’t really with our desert open concept floor plan.
The kids and my husband and I really can’t give up the cat plan. Which makes us look like a “whimsical” owner, but we are not. But nevertheless, we need to start looking for responsible loving new parents. I will not just adopt them to anyone which is why if you know of anyone who would be willing to give them a great home I would love to know about it. I can’t not ask a fee, we are as you know into it for quite a large sum. I have lots of toys and pouches I have seen and also made some great infinity scarves too. They are ready for their big cage, we were just about to purchase when this all came to light, but they do have their wheel and hanging sleepers.
I really would appreciate any help, until then we are just loving the heck out of them! They don’t seem to like the veggie mix I made. Bok Choy, celery, cauliflower, carrot, little honey and little vanilla yogurt. I didn’t have the OJ w calcium on the fly, I’ll get some today. What veggie relish do you like? Lol or better yet do THEY like! Thanks guys!—Traci |

Could you please tell me more about the convention in AZ. I looked at the rescue site (on internet) and didn't see details. I would love to go to the convention.

I do know that there is a convention for sugar gliders on April 28 of next year that I am planning to attend. You can find the information on the AZ Sugar glider rescue site. Wish I still did! I lived in AZ for about 10 months in 2014, would have loved to stay but circumstances didn't allow it. I lived in AJ (love, love, love the Supes), but I'm familiar where Queen Creek is. Actually stayed there at a one-time in-law's place back in 08, before it was built up some. Beautiful! Very bright in the daytime, lol. If you pass through San Tan, there's a neat place called San Tan Flats, if you never been there, it's pretty cool. It's a restaurant and bar, live music (country, not my fav but loved the atmosphere) on stage outside, and fire pits. Family friendly I think till 11 or maybe a little earlier, then drinking age only, can't remember 18 or 21, but think 21. Also been to Ft. McDowell Casino. Visited Grand Canyon, Lake Havasu, and Sedona & Canyon lake while visiting in 08 & 2012 (I think it was 2012, maybe 2010, lol). Anyway, when I lived out there, most I've seen was the Salt River, went tubing-so much fun! Also Tonto National Park, and did go to the Ren Fest when I lived out there, amazing! |
