HELP. I recently adopted a 3 year old sugar baby named Izzy. When i got Izzy, she was clearly not taken the best care of in her last home. She has bald spots on her head (that are huge). She will let me feed her out of my hand but quickly runs away. I have done research for a year or so but nothing can really prepare you for when you get your very own sugar glider who already has set ways. She hates her bonding pouch, she always tries to bite her way through it and will never sleep in it during the day. She also runs away when I walk towards the cage. I talk to her a lot because i stay up all night and during the day before work i always try to bond with her, she has a new cage setup and new toys, i feed her appropriately and give her treats but she just won’t let me hold her and keep her with me in the bonding pouch. I don’t want any negativity please, I’m just trying to give her what she deserves and a nice environment and lots of love. Any advice?

I just crawled into bed for the night and she is running in circles on the top of her cage. I am telling ya, this is the most confusing little baby I’ve ever had!

we had a single glider that was very spastic, jump in circle, run around top of cage. we put her in with 2 other gliders and she acted alot more calm and normal.
but like I said before, if she is not used to humans so much , you may want to set a long time line, be patient and keep up whatever tricks/training you can do.

I think she just wanted to be played with because she kept doing it at about 3am so i got up with her and took her banana out of her cage and she crawled up my arm and into the banana. (the first time she’s ever let me touch her banana or take her out of the cage). When i put her back in the cage i didn’t hear a sound out of her for the rest of the night other than chirping! She’s so confusing! Lol i tried to upload a pic, if you see it... you’ll see her baldness .. she was actually more bald than that when i got her!

daytime gliders sleepy, easier to handle. nighttime gliders active, much harder to handle. My link can be hard to get when he first wakes up, but 1 hour later he wants all over me.
but sounds like Izzy is not so bad, somewhat friendly. I have a very crabby glider in pouch, once he sees me and I talk to him he stops and is fine. but he will always crab bad in pouch when I make noise.
and Yes sometimes small progress may not show up the next night. but will come back the next.
walking on you is a very good sign.

I put it almost on my wrist and she will put 2 feet on me and lick my hand before she eats it. I felt like i was making progress there but then i feel like it’s slowly slowing down! Right now, she’s hissing and then barking right after.... so you know what this means?

something is wrong with your post, I can only respond if I use the quote part....strange.
at work, so short replay.

she might have a UTI, (urinary infection) sometime gliders will hiss while peeing if infected, but sometimes will hiss if not infected. a vet visit is important for new gliders. get an idea where you are at. my vet told me no meds for hissing glider cause everything else looked fine.

I think your glider will take a long time to change her ways, if ever. but I do believe if you give her lots of time, and keep always trying things, and giving her slow pushes along the way, you might get her to change her ways. I have some stubborn gliders, but since I have several that are very friendly, I dont push the others very hard, but do see some improvement in some of them.

so, because of your gliders severe fear or dislike of humans (at this time).
I would set my time line at 6 months MINIMUM. then I would start by doing a few tricks to see if I could get her warmed up to me, I would look for very small changes in her behavior.
to get treats, start putting your arm in the way, so Izzy has to put a foot on your skin to get to the treat. If she does that for a few days, try to get her to put two feet on your arm for the treat...let her run away if she wants. work at getting her more and more on your arm. you can also try to pet her while she is going for the treat, but keep your arm low.
Just try to put your hand near her, not touching her, see how long you can keep your arm near her, let her know she doesn't need to fear your hand. let her sniff your hand.
A stronger trick I would try later, get in a small closet, one big enough for two/three people, and just sit in there with her, see if she will climb on you by herself.
don't try to pick her up anymore, just try to get her on you with a treat, make it her choice to walk on you.
I have one glider that hates bonding pouch, so I dont use it with her anymore.
