SGold Super Glider USA 353 Posts that is terribly depressing. poor little baby :( i hope something happens to that guy and he gets shut down! ughhhh Naruto doesn't deserve to suffer like that...although the mill breeder does. saklsdj;lfkajsd we shouldn't sink to his level though. i'm glad Nu-New is still fighting though. LovingLife123 Fuzzy Wuzzy USA 1069 Posts IneedaSuggie Joey 22 Posts Rita, I could understand why you would not want to buy from theses various sellers, but these sugar gliders need saved. They need homes as do every sugar glider does, especially these. You don't always need to give them a forever home, you could foster them, get them healthy then you can give them to a forever home. Just because they come from a bad breeder, mill, etc. doesn't mean they still don't need a home. Every time I've seen a sugar glider in a pet store at or at fair I always call my local rescue group to take care of it. Every sugar glider needs a home no matter where it comes from. As sad and horrible as it is, IF people continue to buy from mills, it will NEVER stop. All they want is money, no matter what it takes to get it. As long as we put money in their pockets - it will never stop. Rita Glider Sprinkles MO, USA 12214 Posts quote: Originally posted by prdycool
This makes me so sad and angry. I wish there was something we could do, like a petition that wasn't bogus. Has anyone seriously looked into getting mills like that shut down? I might do some research myself now that school is done and I have some lawyer type friends, just wondering how far anyone else had gotten.
yes, there have been people fighting mills of every kind (dog, cat, glider, etc) for years and years but the mills are very powerful. The only way to stop them is to educate everyone you can about the inhumane, cruel life these animals live. And to stop buying any animals from pet stores, fairs, home shows, flea markets, etc. purdycool - if you have lawyer friends who would be willing to help, that would be wonderful. A dog group I belong to recently found Century 21 had a "kennel" listed for sale - complete with dogs. They had it advertised as a money maker for someone. WELL - we cross posted that ad EVERYWHERE and flooded Century 21 and the selling agent with letters, phone calls and e-mails from all over the country. It was taken off the market. So, yes, there are people out there trying their best to stop them and have been for years. They are very powerful and have a lot of money, mainly due to uneducated people continuing to purchase from them. It all boils down to the almight dollar. This is the reason I hate PETA. Where are they when it comes to the animal mills????? Probably out spray painting someone's fur coat instead of trying to help the live animals in need. Tate and Jodi Super Glider IA, USA 393 Posts Someone needs to get a job at the ones that are suspected of in-humane practices. Take pics, present them to authority. Play stupid, never heard of them, seen them, yadda yadda. Any housewives avaliable? Also get pics at the fair. just tell them you are taking pics to send to a friend via email or your phone. because you have seen them before and was trying to tell a friend. play stupid again, don't let them know you own any or know anything about them. ask questions, take notes for your 'personal references' and notate age and such of the ones they are showing you. Just again play stupid, and gather evidence. The owners of the one that died (poor babiy) need to alert authorities or a VET to do it with them. Just to at least have some legal documentation on what happen on the books. They probably won't do much, but get it documented. That's my thoughts. I'm a believer that there are some BAD ones out there, but I also like hard evidence and proof when I hear things. Because there may be some good ones out there too that are just getting wrapped up in the 'heat of the moment'. So gather what you can when you see them and start compiling some proof. Rita Glider Sprinkles MO, USA 12214 Posts Charlee - the sad thing about it is, this is just ONE story. There are hundreds more out there that could be told. Jodi, your suggestion of someone going to work for them is excellent and here is how I know that: As I have told some of you, I did rescue work for the Bichon Frise Club of America for many years. (yes, I know. This makes me the worst of the worst because I knew better than to buy from CCW) The lawsuit below came to light due to a young couple who worked at the puppy mill for one week and was so sickened by what they witnessed, they left early one day and went to the Sheriff's department to turn her in. They did a surprise raid and ended up seizing over 500 dogs. Here is something you need to consider: Back on May 28, 1999, I was sued for being involved with shutting down that huge puppy mill located in Tampa, FL. This was one of the very first puppy mill shutdowns that was handled totally online. Thus my involvement living in Missouri. I was in charge of fund raising for the Bichon Frise Club of America and raised over $4,000.00. Here is where to find the law suit if anyone is interested in reading it: My name at that time was Rita J. Ruebsam Alice Holt, Plaintiff vs Numerous Defendants Case # 99-1254-CIV-T-25B May 28, 1999 United States District Court For the Middle District of Florida Tampa Division CIVIL RICO COMPLAINT 18U.S.C.SECTION 1964(c) I was personally sued, along with the Greater St Louis Bichon Frise Club and the Bichon Frise Club of America of which I have memberships. I had to get an attorney to defend me, plus use the two Bichon Club attorneys. These cases take years - and the seized animals cannot be placed or altered as long as they are still legally the mill owners "property". All these animals went to the local Humane Society, which was NOT prepared to handle that many. There were numerous pregnant females. All needed vet care and good food. They were able to contact all the national breed clubs to foster the animals. None of the animals could be removed from the state of Florida. Thus my involvement in fund raising to help take care of the Bichons, of which there were over 200. A law suit like this takes years and someone has to take care of those animals in the meantime. I wont go into the details due to being rather lengthy, but she did lose her case. She then turned around and filed a civil complaint to get her dogs back. Again, she lost and was barred for the rest of her life from owning any animals. So, yes, we did win that one. She was shut down. But it took hundreds of people across the nation, countless dollars and a lot of emotional stress on our parts before it was all over. You never know how a case like this will go. There is no gaurantee the miller wont win. And if that happens, you chance losing whatever it is you have worked for your whole life. I am NOT trying to discourage anyone. You just need to know there can be legal ramifications to your involvement. They will search all over the internet and use anything you say here against you. This story didn't have a happy ending. She went to another county, and set up business with everything being in the name one of her cousins... Something_To_Believe_In Face Hugger 647 Posts Rita - Again, thank you for posting my story here. I am Jackie_Chans_Mom on GC. Naruto's death is tragic and heartbreaking. But, it does not have to be in vain. There already is an organized effort to combat mill breeders. You can find more information and become involved here: http://millbreederproject.suggies.net/
I am heartbroken over the loss of little Naruto. He was with me only a short time, but he took a piece of my heart with him. I am just sick to think how he must have felt every day of his life. Rest assured, those of us involved with the Mill Breeder Project are very serious about our efforts. I have in my possession all of the paperwork from when Naruto was in my home. I also have in my home as of yesterday another CCW glider (reportedly - I don't have receipt yet) who was sold at about 4 weeks OOP with a dead, necrotic foot and leg that will be amputated tomorrow. I know most of you don't know me well since I am not here often, but I happen to live in an abandoned hotel, and have more than enough room for the thousands of gliders that will become homeless when - and I do mean WHEN - these mills are finally shut down. Thank you all for your kind words and your concern for Naruto. I am pleased to see that his story has motivated some of you to help us shut down these mills. Their practices are disgusting and the lives they ruin are precious.
