Well yahtzee jioned the group of the wild an careless, fancy free gliders today. His alteration went just great. Just for those people that are keepin up with the swing of things. I also got the whole "family coloney" weighted. Here goes for those that are interested:

Momma 1 1/2yrs old 5.04 ounces
Poppa 1 1/2yrs old 3.7 ounces
Jo-Jo Girl 9mos. old 3.8 ounces
Yahtzee 6mos. old 3.8 ounces
Scrabble 6mos. old 3.7 ounces
Boggle 2mos. old 3.2 ounces

I would also like to let everyone know what my vet informed me of today, that might be helpful to some. I get sent home with oral pain meds with my little boys, she does not put that e-collar on the {already} ticked little runts. Anyway, the meds I get is called: METACAM, an you would give an average dose of 1.5mg/ml oral. {of course} But I was told that it is good to have on hand, cause when your gliders hurt them selvies or each other. This is a great pain reliever for the little ones'. Guess it is like a super dose of ibuporphen. Vet said that its self life is pretty loing, too.

There is my little tid-bit I learned on that visit to the vet's, for everyone else to know or alredy know.

Metacam has been widely used in sugar gliders for many years. It has also been linked to liver damage if used extensively. The general rule of thumb with Metacam is to use it only 3 consecutive days and then take a break from it.

Glad to hear your neuter went well.

P.S. - have you always weighed your gliders in ounces rather than grams? If so, I would love to get some more information from you. I use the standard gram measurement since it allows me to be more precise. However, I am interested in gram/ounce conversion and in average weights in ounces.

Converted! 1 oz = 28.3495 g

Momma 1 1/2yrs old 5.04 ounces ==> 142.881 g
Poppa 1 1/2yrs old 3.7 ounces ==> 104.893 g
Jo-Jo Girl 9mos. old 3.8 ounces ==> 107.728 g
Yahtzee 6mos. old 3.8 ounces ==> 107.728 g
Scrabble 6mos. old 3.7 ounces ==> 104.893 g
Boggle 2mos. old 3.2 ounces ==> 90.7184 g

Sorry, just an engineer with too much time on my hands!

Ok Ok, I did not know that about the pain meds. My vet has my boy on the meds for 7 days at the dose of 1.5 ml. All she as told me each time is that the gliders might get the munchies from the meds. Sorry had to laugh, my gliders are alwaays hunger.

Yes, all the the joeys are of OOP. So I guess you could add what 2 more months to the ages if you go by the in pouch & gestation time.

My vet first weight them in the gram formula, then she converts it in to ounecs for me. It's just easyer for me to worrk in the head, since there is alot of empty space up in my head, to have information get lost. So I ask for them to convert the weights. Thats all.

Thanks for all the "at a boys & good jobs"

ok, for those of us who are not engineers and/or do not have too much time on our hands, you can convert grams & ounces online. here's the web address i use:
www.onlineconversion.com/weight_common.htm

no offense to either engineers or any of you who have a lot of spare time.......LOL

You might want to talk with your vet about the links between Metacam use and liver damage in gliders.

That is not at all why I was asking that question, and I think that a joeys OOP age should be JUST THAT - beginning from the date that they are fully detached (OOP). I asked because 90 grams for an 8 week OOP joey seems fairly large.

Now, for those of you that DO convert to ounces: I wonder WHY you are doing so? Just for my own information, that's all.
I weigh my gliders every other week. I have a lot of special needs gliders here and frequently have ill gliders who are "visiting" for rehabilitation. I can tell you from experience that a weight gain or loss of even 5 grams can be very significant - esp. in a healing glider. Since there are 28.something grams in an ounce, it would seem to me that weighing in ounces would not reveal this gain/loss. By the time a glider looses 28 grams (to make a difference in ounce weight), he/she could be dead. At least that is the case with some of the gliders in my house. So, if you are weighing in ounces, how are you keeping track of these type changes in weight?

When the vet looked at the weights, the only one she questioned was Momma. But she said that it might be from her still nursing.

An never thought to ask my vet, figured since she worked several years down in the rescue shelters & the zoos down in Aus. that she would have been well educated in that/those department. An with her having 2 diets published after her, she knows what she's talking about. But I just might ask to see what her responce is.

Lol, i remember talking on the phone to one of the "best glider vets" with a "diet after him" who told me gliders don't eat sap in the wild, that sap is a last resort when there are no bugs...and that I should feed: fruits, vegetables and a pellet food. He too went to Australia and all that stuff. Unfortunately that doesn't always mean anything. I'm not trying to knock your vet just don't always take that to mean they are an expert.

I'd recommend you getting a gram scale and keeping more accurate up to date weight of your gliders. Everyone should do this since weight loss is sometimes the first or only sign of illness. Gram scales are like 30 dollars at target. I've been meaning to buy one since i preach weighing gliders so much but I never had the extra money. I will go get one tomorrow.

I just use a postal scale. I got it dirt cheap on ebay and it does lbs, grams and oz.

I have a digital kitchen scale that has both grams and ounces on it. It works very well. Like Rheasha said, it's best to weigh your gliders once a week and write it down for your Emergency Prepardness Kit. It could come in handy when your vet asks for info on your animal.
