I wasnt really sure what category to put this under but after reading and looking through the classifieds I am starting to think that it is really sad that no body wants to really adopt older gliders or gliders from glider mills. I can see that if you already have a gliders that maybe you wouldnt want to get one from a glider mill because you dont know what kind of diseases it may or not may not have but when I got to thinking about it I felt really bad for the gliders at the glider mills because if you were to adopt them they are getting a chance at a good home, to be fed properly, and to be loved. Dont get me wrong I am very much against glider mills I think they are wrong, but I just feel bad for the gliders there being fed lord knows what and getting treated sooo poorly. And as for the older gliders I cant understand why no body wants to adopt them? If they can live 15 years in captivity they certainly arent going to die anytime soon if you take care of them and get them at age 2 or 3. Are people afraid that they wont be bonded too by their glider? I got mine when he was a year old and he is the sweetest thing ever! I dont know I just think its all really sad.....
Well I think it's really sad also. But if you buy from a mill you are only encouraging the mills to breed more. The more people who stick together and stay away from the mills the better chance we have of getting them shut down. They do it for the money and if the money eventually stops coming in then they stop breeding. As for the older gliders. I considered buying and older pair but the more I thought of it I wanted babies b/c I felt that there would be a better connection and I would know exactly what their health history would be b/c it would start with me. If I were to get anymore gliders in the future I will probably buy an older pair from Priscilla Price.
yeah I would tooooo if the mill was shutting down and they were just rehoming with no fee. otherwise they could just say they are shutting down and continue to breed and sell
Yeah I see where you are coming from Ericarehaume, It is really sad. I can relate with my Siberian Husky Sasha. She came from a bad home and was infested with heartworms when I got her. I was going to buy a puppy but when I met Sasha I just fell in love! I think they are greatful too. Sasha is so well behaved compared to my other dog that I have had since she was a puupy. I think adoption is great (If we can possibly avoid supporting the glider mills!).
Ya I guess I can understand that now about glider mills and wanting to shut them down. Its just so sad to think about all the poor little suggies being treated horribly. Well Ill still stand by my older sugar gliders! Lol. Dexter (my boy glider) is like my baby. I was really blue about not being able to have anymore kids (and Im only 22) but when I met Dexter I carry him everywhere like he is a baby and he just lets me. I think some people think Im kinda weird but he has really brightened me up a lot!
yeah i understand that situation but its also not the gliders fault and i think that every glider should get a chance at a good life!! if their was a glider mill in spokane and my mother would let me get some sugar babies i woud get some from the mill and i know that encourages the mill breeders but if i did i would be giving gliders more chances to live but also i would cause the breeder to breed more :'( so either way we are screwed! if we feel like we are doing the right thing it is the right thing but on the other hand we arnt
Here is the problem. The major key. Think back to before you were a glider mommy or daddy. Before you knew anything about them other than they were the cutest things you had ever seen. If you would have been at a home show, or a flea market, or even browsing online and saw CCW they would appear to be legitimate. Most people don't know a thing about gliders, glider mills, how to feed, care, or home a glider until they buy one. Unfortunately most people do not do reasearch before buying a cute little glider, I mean how hard could alittle thing like that be to take care of right? Let's go buy it a hamster cage with all of the tubes and give it some bird seed. The only way to stop this nonsence is to raise awarness. We even need a ribbon LOL. It can be a ribbon that looks like a twisted crayon!! Haha! But really...we've got to get the message out there. Glider information. Well, I'm rambling...I'll get back at this later. LOL
LOL it's great to see people so caring about creatures it just lights me up in side.... And I completely understand ericarehaume about brighening your world up!!!! :)
also....ya'll know my baby angus....he was from a mill, way too small, malnurished with baldness on his head....but now he is back to total perfect size and has every hair back. i feel so good knowing i made a differnence.
yeah I agree with you Charlee. A lot of people do think it is like having a hamster. One of my friends thought that gliders only live for a year! Yeah I think the reality is a lot of us did not do our research before we bought them (very typical!)
yeah, when most people go to roadshows, flea markets, etc the buy is out of impulse. like gahhh i have to have these shoes sugar gliders. then they get home and its like oh crap, i practically just took on another child that i am not prepared for.
There are several of us here who have adopted older gliders. My Weasel is 3+ (that is what I was told) years old, meaning I dont really know how old she is. Her age doesnt matter to me.
Priscilla Price is a breeder in Houston Tx, she owns the pet glider..I have one of her retired breeding pair that are five yrs old and I just love them so much they are awesome suggies!!
thats sad :( I did not care about the age of my glider when i got him. If anything i think an older glider would be easy-r. They would be more tame, than a baby.
my vinnie is older than 2 and was older than 2 when i got him. they didn't know his exact age either. he's great. if only i could get him to stop trying to groom the base of my neck.. that hurts!!
Older gliders and Glider Mills I just think its sad........
