i rescently purchased a sugar glider from pocket pals he is 8 weeks old outta the pouch & they told me that it is a male....& then the other day i bought another sugar glider that the pet store says is a female,the pet store didnt know how old she is but she(or he..not sure)looks about full grown length....but my main question is is how can i be sure that the new one is female or male...the book i bought shows black & white pictures of what male/female look like & its difficult to tell exactly whats what!!! can anyone help me out here? pretty please cuz i wanna be sure what to call them cuz i dont want to call a male "honey" lol

Ummm - you need to be more concerned with them breeding. They can breed like rabbits and before you know it, you will be overwhelmed with the amount of gliders.... Getting your male neutered would be the best thing. A neutered little boy doesnt have raging hormones to contend with and makes a much nicer pet.

I would definitely suggest getting your male neutered - not just to prevent breeding, and make them nicer, but also cause of the smell you will soon find out about. Listen to Rita :)

Being a smart butt..I so wanted to say..if it has a genitalia it's a boy and if not it's a girl....sorry first thing that went through my mind when I saw your thread.

Be sure to take them to the vet for a well check...if you are going to hve them neutered many vets will do a pre-op exam..be sure to have a fecal done...if your newbaby has any parisites you want to get that taken care of. Neutered males not only smell less they are less aggresive and seem to bond easier.

If or when your boy is/gets older he will have a diamond patch of white fur on his head. He might already have it if hes old enough.

Are you talking about their bald spot?

That's not really white fur, it's where the males secrete oil (a scent gland) and mat the fur down, also known as a bald spot.

If he gets neutered, it will go away over time. The way I tell is that if it is a girl, she will have a slit in her stomach (the pouch). And if it is a boy, he will have an aboject (that I can't remember the name of) that is similar to a small ball just below his stomach.

actually neutered males will sometimes still have bald spots. Especially if they are in a new area and start marking again.

If it's a neutered boy most vets take off the sac so he could not have a sac but still have a bald spot.
