Can the gliders have the tomatoe seed? Can they have any type of tomatoe? and since they are acidic, how often can they have them? Considered a fruit or vegetable?

I am not absolutly sure but they are a fruit yet they are acidic and because of that I would only give them in moderation if you give them at all. Same thing with citrus only give in moderation. But that what I think someone else may think differently. Mine have never had tomatoes so I don't even know if they will eat them. I'm sure a senior glider owner will come along soon to this thread and inform us both!

I've only ever given cherry tomatoes but I just cut it in half. I agree about not giving it very often because it's so acidic. I consider it a fruit when I feed it though.

I usually put about a half of a cherry tomatoe in they're trays for both of them a night. i squeeze out the inside of the tomato just in case the seeds are harmful.

Mine also like the cherry tomatoes. Even tho I had my own little cherry tomatoe plant this summer and it really produced well for me - I still only fed them to my gliders once a week.

Mine gets a little tomato about once a week, just the meat, no seeds. However, I have given him whole yellow pear tomatoes (they're so small) and he'll eat all of it, no ill effects. Just one at a time!

Erica I wouldn't be feeding it out to them every night a it is quite acidic. Perhaps as Rita suggests once a week would be better

I had a cherry tomato plant this summer and my fuss buts would actually eat tomatoes but then I realized they are low in Calcium so they should be fed with something to offset that.

I think mine are really Mexican and not Australian..the love when I make toco's and they get lean meat, cheese, tomatoe and romaine..NO ONIONS..

I have been feeding mine tomatoes probably 2x a week for the last 4 weeks, but I use it as a fruit, because it seems like the month of October has been "fruit strike" month. Seriously, they seemed to have all posted a ban on fruit. I don't feel too bad about the calcium though, because they eat lots and lots of leafy greens, like collards and spinach (some every night); yes, there is the acidity issue, BUT...that is why I feed it as a fruit. Tomatoes are more acidic than most vegetables, BUT it is actually LESS acidic than many fruits (believe it or not...it's true..you can look it up), such as pears, peaches, plums and strawberries. The least acidic is (I think) the yellow pear shaped cherry tomatoes. Fortunately, mine like beets also and they are somewhere in the PH 6 range; the only other things they will eat currently fruit-related are cantaloupe and papaya..so frustrating. However, all of these, YES..including tomatoes, are middle of the road...neither truly acidic nor alkalizing.

Just to dispel a myth, many citrus fruits (for example..lemons!!) are actually alkalizing and are probably not so bad too feed; even though they are acidic ph level; they have the opposite effect in our bodies and are alkalizing in the blood stream...since gliders are mammals with blood, I would assume the same is true, but I really haven't tried since they didn't like oranges the one time I tried anyway.

Well, the girls had their BML mix last night along with papaya chunks and a salad (spring mixed greens, cucumber, and a cherry tomatoe) guess what is left this morning? The BML mix wasn't touched. So, I have figured the salad is good for one day a week. Good thing they had some mealies yesterday with some yogurt for tent time.

Good more food items to try.

Gliders absolutely love fresh greens!!! That is always the first bowl they go for when I feed it to them.

Again - please dont think we are talking about lettuce, which has no nutritional value. We are talking about a bag of salad you can purchase called Spring Mix, which is a bag of baby greens that include greens along with spinach.

Have you given them fresh spinach? Mine wont eat the frozen kind unless I hide it in something. What we are talking about here are fresh greens.

Mine LOVE spinach cooked in with their egg.

Mine also loved their spinached scrambled in eggs.

On frozen spinach: while it does not lose any nutritional value (and there is even same debate that it retains it longer); it really doesn't taste the same raw after the thaw... try it yourself and see LOL; if it's cooked, it's quite fine. But quite frankly, if you were given a choice between eating mushy, watery thawed frozen spinach or nice crisp fresh leaf....wouldn't you pick fresh? So, if you haven't tried it, give it a try...

I totally agree! Fresh is the way to go. It even smells better. LOL

It does smell better! Until it starts to get a little mushy a few days before it goes bad; and then it will stink up the whole fridge...ugh!!! I bought one of those little dorm size fridges to keep all the glider food in; so their bml could stink it up instead of my freezer :)

Oh, and on my above post "spinached" is not a word, but whatever; I have typo problems tonight.

i made some spinach with thier scrambled eggs last night and they didnt seem to care for it.. im glad i read about the 'matos though because i dive them to them too much it looks like. :(
