Our vet has neutered over 150 males and we have always taken the food out in the morning. As fast as their metabalism is I can't imagine letting them go so long without food. I remember talking to our vet about that years ago and he told me that taking the food out at midnight was not needed for that reason. We have never had an issue so far. I know our vet gives them a little gas to put them under.

My vet that I use my dogs do not do exotic animals so this vet does gliders. On the way to the vet this morning I put him in his zippered bonding pouch, he was furious that he was zipped up, he started crabbing and trying to chew his way out. It was very cold out and I did not want him exposed to the cold but he was going nuts so I finally let him run around in his travel cage. When we walked in the office he was all eyes looking around, the girls at the office did not frighten him at all. I asked if I could give him a treat before I left and they said yes. She also told me that they can eat uptil the surgery, so the food I brought would be in the cage all day. I will get post op instructions tonight, I sure hope I do not have to keep him alone for long.

typically he does not mind the bonding pouch but he is always with "Izzy", so he was not too happy she was not in there. I will pick him up after work today, she said to keep him alone for 24 hours, that ought to be fun. The vet said he is very alert, she did give him some pain meds and will send some pain meds home with him. Not sure how I am going to know if he is in pain or not. I guess if he does not eat give him some pain meds.

Usually the medication is prescribed every "x" number of hours so I'd just give it to him however it says on the bottle. I had to put mine back in with the others when he was fully awake that night because he FLIPPED out. He was doing backflips, running in circles and just really, going crazy. I thought for sure he would hurt himself. I put him back in with the others and he was calm instantly. I watched them like a hawk though for basically, the next few days.

Yeah me too, I was surprise when the vet called me this morning. She was so nice, she said he was alert and climbing around. Said she did physical on him and he looks great. I asked if he had sutures, she said no and the opening is very tiny and it will close up by tomorrow. I told her he was a big eater and she said he looked healthy but just be careful.

It sounds like things went very smoothly!

I've had 7 gliders neutered, and in every case, they have been back with their cage mates the same night. If they don't have complications, such as Self Mutilation, they hardly know anything at all happened! Just keep an eye on him. As for the pain meds - the vet will tell you how often to give them. Just follow the schedule, don't wait for him to show pain.

That's right - Because they typically don't show pain. I'd just follow Dr's. orders.
