So, my fiance and my Grandma seem to have settled on getting me a Glider cage for Christmas and/or Gliders instead of a new computer (LOL). I went over to Pet World and harassed the staff about cage dimensions, pricing, painted bars, and gaps between bars ... most of them are about three feet high and vary in width from very wide (2.5 feet) to slim (18 in). There's a really great Glider cage there for about $175, but that's kind of pricy just for the cage.

Should I go for security (lots of locks, thick unbendable unpainted bars, no guillotine hatches) or size (BIG finch breeding cage for the same price)? A handful of locks for school lockers is no big deal. Basically, all the cages they sell that would be appropriate for Gliders are made by a company called "Super Pet." Their website is here: www.superpetusa.com/index.html

They don't have all their catalog available online, but at the time I was looking at a large Ferret/Chinchilla cage with small gaps somewhat like this www.superpetusa.com/catalog/viewone.asp?itemNumber=60226 but bigger. Do Gliders tolerate stairs and shelves? Will it bother them?

The only thing that I didn't like was that they didn't have any larger than 3 ft HIGH, and they don't ship ... So I might just use one of these links instead. www.sugar-gliders.com/glider-cage.htm
www.sugar-gliders.com/sturdy-cage.htm

Most likely, I'll be looking for the Gliders to buy in early January. I think it'd be kind of dumb to buy them before I had something to put them in ...

i'd have to say going for size is always best. some times on ferret cages you'll wind up with to wide of bar spacings. you should try ebay. alot of people have found some really great cages for a reasonabe price on there. there's also always the option of making your own..
edit to add: you can also try craigslist. =]

In my opinion the first one at superpetusa is too small for gliders. Your best bet is ebay. You get a lot more cage for the money.

This style is the best because it's sturdier and has doors that are larger and non-guillotine style.

The shelves and ladders are very handy!! You can place their food up high where they like it. And it gives them a resting place.

I just don't want to pay $40 for shipping ... on top of what is likely to be inflated bidding from Ebay. I would much rather purchase the cage at a flat rate. Worst comes to worst, we could just tie it to the top of the car and drive it home.

Weird? The third one you linked looks JUST like the expensive one at Pet World, color, stand, and everything.

But once you add the shipping to the Buy It Now price, isn't it still a far better deal than buying locally? I'm not trying to argue, but sooo many of us have already gone through this and learned the hard way.

I'm just balking at $100 for a MINIMUM size cage, when I could buy something bigger that my Gliders would be happier in ...

I just don't know if 5/8" bar space means ... wouldn't that be wider than half an inch? (4/8")

This second one is the same as the first link that I posted, but with 5/8" spacing.

I agree with dizzysmom, you really should try ebay. The very last one she posted is a very nice cage. It's big and is very sturdy. If you keep checking ebay sometimes you can find that cage for much cheaper.
