Hey,

How many hours of sleep a day is normal for a glider? What would be a normal sleeping schedule?

Thanks

I think it depends on the gliders situation. I find if my house is cooler mine stay in the pouch more. they aren't asleep though.

Lone gliders sleep more than pairs in my experience, or just stay in the pouch.

my groups wake up around 12 or so. THey go to bed at like 7 am. I think they take little naps in between. I dont know they could just be chillin' in their pouches.

Mine get up around 11:30 PM or so to eat and then take a nap and play and nap off and on throughout the night. They are still awake when I get up in the morning (between 5:30 & 6:00 AM during the week) and if I let them play out of the cage they sometimes will play until late morning. If I don't let them out to play, they normally are asleep by around 8:00 AM.

Edited to add: I stand corrected -- I did NOT let them out this morning because we are having furnace issues so the temp in here is fluxuating between 60 - 70 and I just popped into the room to get their food dish and my little chunky monkey girl is awake and having a late morning snack! She looked at me like "I hope you don't think that you are taking this yet and why did you not let me out for play time today? What is the matter with you Mommy?"

Mine are usually up about 11, play, eat, rest, then are back in pouches settling down for the day between 7:30 and 8. Occassionally they won't get up until 12 or later.

I have 2 gliders in a bedroom all to themselves. The room stays completely dark. Lately they have been awake at 9pm (they used to wake up at 10 before they got their own bedroom, now they wake up earlier). They eat and play for a bit then take a nap. My female (which will be introduced to the other 2 soon) wakes up around 10 because she's in the office right now and it does not stay completely dark.

As far as how long they sleep in the day? Well....all day. Mine go to bed between 7-7:30 am and sleep until 9 or 10pm unless I wake them up earlier.

My glider wakes up very late (1 or 2 am) and doesn't go to sleep until sometimes as late as 11 am. I was thinking, and noticed that her awake habits follow my sleep habits (i usually don't go to bed until 2 or 3 am..and sometimes am up all night..and then don't get up until 10 am or later. Do you think this is okay for her? I don't want to mess up her inner clock or something with my sleep habits. At nighttime around 9 I do begin to dim the lights . What do you guys think?

That's funny that is exactly why asked the question in the first place. I am having that same worry.

Sugar gliders have an internal biological clock but they also respond to outside stimulus. If you keep a glider in a dark basement, it's dark almost all the time, very little light, and they will have problems not knowing when it's sleepy time and when it's awake time. Arie, I think your suggies are fine. They are simply reacting to the stimulus you provide...your awake time is off a few hours from "normal" (whatever normal is) so your lighting in your house is off. I think they are just waiting a few hours after the lights start to dim to come out, which makes sense since it doesn't get dark outside immediately. You have to go through the whole process of dusk and then dark and the moon rising and all that. Then it's the same way when you get up...it's just a few hours later.

Mine wake up around 8pm. Eat, (sometimes crawl back into their pouch for a 1/2 hour or so), usually come back out on play with me for a couple of hours. I usually go to bed around 11. I wake up at 6am and can usually hear them playing until I get in the shower around 7am. By 7;30 when I am ready for work they are all bedded down.

Sometimes on the weekend they get up in the middle of the day and wander around. Maybe they do that during the week also but I am not here to see it. It's kinda funny though when they do that. They look drugged. Just like the way my boys looked for about 24 hours after they were neutered.

my babies get woken up by me at 11pm mostly because i want to see them and I also feed them at that time - sometimes they go right back to sleep after having a bit to eat - but one of the four tends to be out playing more often durring the night than the others - I watch tv in their room so i can watch them and keep the lights very dim so they know its night time - i think they are all just different with how often and what time they sleep - depends on their personality - i think its good if you have a light on at night that its just like a night light so they dont get too confused about daytime and night time - the shades stay open all day too so its really bright in there durring the day I wouldnt be too concerned about screwing up their schedual - i have found with mine if they really want to sleep - they will - unless they are staying up all day long or something I wouldnt be too concerned

We wake ours up at 9 p.m. for playtime and their dinner is waiting for them when we put them back. Sometimes they eat and then take a nap; other times, they nap before eating. As long as they mostly sleep through the day, and just nap during the night, they're fine. If they sleep all the time, something is wrong.
