Hey everyone, I'm new to the glider world.

I just got my glider on Friday and I love her. However, her sleeping habits have been a little off (I think) since I got her and I didn't know if it was just due to the change in environment or what.

The first night I brought her home, she wanted to keep sleeping but I woke her up around 10 or 11 to play and she went back to bed when I went to bed at 1. I know she woke up at some point in the night because I heard her running on her wheel and fussing around in the cage. And when I woke up around 10 AM she was still awake playing on her wheel and eating a little. She went to bed around 11 AM.

Then last night she didn't wake up again so I woke her up around 10 or 11 again to play. I moved her cage to the living room, so I don't know if she went to bed or not when I put her back in the cage around 2 AM. I woke up today around 11 AM and she was in her pouch just hanging out and she went back to sleep shortly after. She still hasn't woken up now, so I took her out and she's now sleeping in my pocket.

Are these sleeping habits just her getting used to her new home? She seems pretty comfortable around us...she doesn't crab that much at any of us and lets me and all of my roommates pick her up without a fuss where as the first day she was pretty touchy. I just tend to worry a lot and I don't want there to be anything wrong with her of course.

They should get better. being in a different home and place can make them stressed and/or nervous so their sleeping habits will be off for the first little bit you have them.

I just got another glider and her habits are off too. Boogie my first glider wakes up around 7-8 and Tinker bell (My new one) hasnt waken up until 9:30. and i walked in there about 20-40 minutes ago and she was just sittin awake in her pouch starring.. But shes awake now..
Her sleeping patterns should even out.

Gliders are nocturnal which means they are most ACTIVE at night, but they can still be awake and alert during the day. My gliders will normally wake up, play for a while, go back into their pouch and groom each other, come back out, etc.

It could be the change in environment that has her a little off-kilter. You really should let her be for a few days so that she can get used to her surroundings. She is more than likely stressed out and once she gets used to her new home and the people in it, she will settle down.

Do you plan on getting her a friend? Gliders are social animals and cannot be kept alone. They will eventually get depressed, which can lead to over-grooming, lack of appetite, self-mutilation and starvation. Having a friend should also even out your glider's sleep pattern.

And since you're new, I'd like to offer a few other friendly suggestions. First being take your glider to an exotic vet. If you don't know of any vets let us know the area you live in and we will help you find one. Make sure you ask for a wellness exam AND a fecal smear/float. The fecals will help rule out any parasites in your glider.

Also, what diet are you feeding your glider? Gliders can live up to 15 years with proper care, and we want our beloves pets to live as long as possible. A good diet is a step in the right direction!

What size cage do you have? Gliders need lots of room to glide and play! So the taller, the better when it comes to cages. And be sure to fill it with toys!! Anything safe for a baby is safe for a glider. Mine love barrel of monkeys, Fisher Price toys and straws. Just be sure to avoid anything with catnip as that is toxic to gliders.

Not everyone's gliders have the same sleeping habits. My female's sleep schedule is exactly like yours, except now she's starting to get up at 12am. I've had her for about 6mo or so. My male used to get up at 10pm but after a week of having him, he won't get up until around 12-1am. You can, if your lucky, get them to wake up a few hours sooner, but it takes time and patience. When I first brought my female home, she wouldn't get up until 3-4am and would be wide awake in the morning. As I mentioned, she now gets up at 12am and waits for me to wake up in the morning before she goes to bed so she can get her morning belly rub =] I started off waiting until she woke up to feed her, but I noticed that the sooner I put her food in the cage, the sooner she woke up. And at one point I did have her waking up at 10:30-11pm. Hopefully this made sense, I kinda just rambled along .

mine wake up at 7...almost sharp! because they know food is on its way :)

then they sleep for a few hours after grubbin (everyone...all 8...its kinda weird) then they wake back up if i scoop them out to play, or if not then theyre awake again around 11...silly kids!
