My personal experience with grapes / raisins- we had a dog that ended up with renal and liver failures- one of her favorite treats was frozen grapes, the vet told us that there was a link in some pets to liver issues if they had other conditions.... So we no longer get grapes for us or any pet, our animals eat the same snacks that we have so I won't risk it.

But there is no evidence that gliders should not have grapes, it is my personal decision not to have grapes or soy products in my house (except for Protein Wombaroo Powder) I have a personal issue with soy, and refuse to use it.- again a personal choice that I inflict on my husband as he will not shop.

I believe the initial reason that this rumor came about was because of the effects that grapes have shown in dogs and cats. There is nothing PROVEN yet that shows grapes have an adverse effect on gliders. So it really is a personal choice. If you don't want to "risk" it, don't. But if you feel there's no evidence against them, go for it.

Actually, if people would read the link provided, you'd see EXACTLY why this information came about and what prompted the "investigation" into it. Hardly a rumor. In the link I initially provided, there is plenty of documented info. Does it pertain to gliders? Not specifically. It can't be proven that is does affect gliders any more than it can be proven it does NOT. That is why I have repeatedly stated exactly everything else you did.

Your concern about soy is probably also the same reason I veer away from it. It's another one of those "read up on it and make your own decision" kind of item. There are threads here about soy as well.

Yeah, the link talks about Someones opinion, lots of people talking about grapes poisoning their dogs (which aren't in the same family as the Sugar glider) and Skunks (which aren't in the same family as the Sugar glider) throwing around nothing but accusations and suspicions with no concrete evidence while people that disagree with them show them actual information that says there is no proven connection.

All of the articles that mention the grape effect are careful in their wording. None of them say grapes are the cause of the effect, only suggesting a possibility. Such wording may be because there is a lack of empirical evidence.

I could definitely go with pesticides on the grapes killing the little guys but isn't that why we rinse off our fruit? Maybe that is it, maybe they had to much zinc in their water and rinsing it off was what did it.

Again, mine don't really like grapes so I don't really have to be concerned about it. I'm a stickler for facts. I just don't take someones word for it.

I'll just keep repeating myself, I suppose, as everyone else is. It can't be proven that is does affect gliders any more than it can be proven it does NOT. There's plenty of good information there. There's plenty of informative facts there. Everyone here is a big boy or girl. You all can make the decisions you want. I'll make the decisions I want. Chances are, we'll ALL have gliders that are healthy for a long time.

<br />Oxalates.

Whether you are talking about grapes or anything else, it's kind of careless to say you are going to feed them something just because you did and they seem fine. My glider that died was fine for 3 years, including the night before he died. Just because they appear fine does not mean they are and again, I'm not just talking about grapes. You could eat Doritos and Twinkies every day and be fine for quite some time. My point is you should not feed it because they appear fine after. You should feed it because you read the information offered and made an informed decision.

Yes I do not eat sushi, or any fish for that matter.

I had a pet dog that was very allergic to soy, it was horrible to see and took us a while to realize it was her food. I felt like such a bad parent! the 3rd vet told us that we should feed the least amount of grains as possible- dogs are meat eaters and soy was not on their list of normal foods.

I also had a very great friend that was diagnosed with breast cancer, on one of her treatment visits that I went with her, her Doctor very adamantly told her to get rid of everything soy in her house, and never get anymore. That was enough for me to not eat it ever again.

So while some people will tell you I am crazy, soy is a wonderful source of all things good- I will not change my mind, I will not eat it or purchase it. It is my personal decision, I try to do the best for my animals and husband, I even watch the foods and treats that I donate to the animal shelter and food bank.

If this is our criteria for making an informed decision, whatever are we to do when another rescuer of 70 or more gliders comes along and says that she feeds grapes and her vet (who treats a lot of sick and injured gliders on a regular basis) says that it is OK. ??

Really, I think that Kylah is trying to make the point that each person should read the information provided for any and all sources and make their own decision- not because any rescuer told you this or that or because you read it here, but because you took the time to do some research, weigh the pros and cons, and make up YOUR OWN mind about what you are or are not going to do.
Simple as that really. Some will decide to feed grapes, some will not. I don't think there is any reason to make anyone feel badly either way.

I know who the rescue is with 70 gliders that do not recommend grapes cause she tried to tell me they were bad! This very same rescue feeds tomatoes and oranje juice which I have always heard by another rescue of 70 plus (at the time) not to feed/give them. I also heard they were lactose intolerant by others. The point is all the info is controversial with gliders from feeding, to what they should sleep in, what the substrate should be or not be, etc. So you going to get a lot of info when you make a post like this. Time to study info and TALK WITH YOUR VET!!

It's not PB and J. It's the PB. It's said to have carcinogens that lead to liver cancer and failure, however there is no medical studies that back this up. So enjoy that PB. ;)

I did all the research in the world and found it's bad for dogs, maybe cats and no mention of gliders.

@CSG I know there is no medical study that backs that up just like there isn't any medical study to back up the grapes.
