Granite State Gliders?
Question

I currently live in Maine and will glider-momma some-time in these next months. I was wondering if anyone on this site has experience with this particular breeder.
(granite state gliders) This is their website:

www.granitestategliders.com/

Please if you have any info or in-sites about this breeder could you please tell me. Even if you have never heard of them, maybe your personal opinion about what they seem to be? And I do know that appearance is not always the truth, (PPP's web-site taught me that, not that I didn't already know that). Anyway, experiences & opinions welcome.

I personally don't know about them, but how the breeder interacts with you is always an indicator. do they want to know about how you intend to care for the gliders before agreeing to sell to you? you can also ask them about what they use (e.g. cage, wheel, diet, toys). if you can, talk to them on the phone! it will give you a better impression. how willing are they to answer your questions or do they just want to get rid of the gliders?
in my experience, the good breeders I have talked to are so happy to answer any questions you have about care, and will want to know a certain amount about you before selling.
I hope this helps :)

Personal experience, she feeds something similar leadbeaters and has no knowledge of other diets. She tld me she doesn't do fecals because her animals are healthy. She was very nice, informative and somewhat reasonably price. You HAVE to buy a cage from her unless you prove you have a suitable one. They have nice toys, treats and beautiful cages there. There is also a breeder, smaller in Vinalhaven Maine, island gliders. She is on facebook and gc.

I've emailed them once or twice and every question i asked was readily answered. Soon I will be setting up an appointment with them to see their gliders and get any questions I may still have answered. (I will even get to handle a joey or two!) So exited...but as I said it will take awhile to get an adequet amount of toys, food, etc. After that it shouldn't be a problem.

I looked at island gliders, I like Granite State Gliders better, I am already planning to buy one of their cages as I like the set-up.

They don't look like a hobby breeder to me...but that is something I look for in a breeder. Someone who enjoys the animal, looks for the perfect home, and is not making a living off of selling animals they breed.

I live in New Hampshire, and thought about getting a glider from them, but they honestly seemed a little pricey. I got mine from a woman in Nashua, Nh, who charged a lot less.

And they sell their gliders at 6-7 weeks oop!!!!!! They claim that they generally are eating on their own and independent by then...is this possible or is it way too young?
They also say that they are less protective and bond better at that age.

Fact or Fiction??????????????

I thought fiction, too much controversy!

Look in the classifieds here and on other glider websites if you are open to shipping.

If having 80+ pairs concerns you, I wouldn't go with Suncoast either as they have just as many if not more, but you can find smaller scale breeders that are willing to ship.

I know some of the glider rescues(Val's in particular) will work on railroads to get adopted gliders to their new homes so even though they're farther away, it doesn't hurt to contact them as well.

80+ gliders is only a concern because I'm worried about how much time they really have to spend and take care of each individual glider. GSG does not ship. Does SunCoast? And is it safe to ship gliders? Does it cost more if you ship them?

I personally wouldn't buy from someone that has 80+ pairs because at that point its a business/money making venture. Suncoast hires people to handle and help care for their gliders, but as there are other great small scale breeders available, I would choose to support them as they're in it for the greater good of gliders.

Shipping can be safe - work with a breeder that has done it before. Continental is most recommended, but other airlines are OK too. I had a very poor experience with Delta and would never recommend them though. It does cost $200-300 extra to ship as it requires an extra exam/paperwork, kennel, and the airline charges a lot as well.

suncoast charges 175 for a standard grey. I believe its 200 for shipping. You can ship 2 gliders for the same amount. So keep that in mind. I got my girls from a breeder in Arkansas and I think I paid 600 total.

As I said before, Val of Kingdom Kritters can help you get rescue gliders all over the US. SHe has a large network of volunteers that will help railroad(aka drive short portions of the journey) to get gliders home. She has an application/interview process, but she will work with you even if you are a distance away.

Island gliders is a new breeder, but she is very active on the forums, and is very good.

Suncoast is a larger breeder, but not a mill, in my opinion. Lisa is very committed to giving her gliders the best possible, as well as furthering research and education to improve the lives of all of our gliders.

She hires someone to help her with feeding, it is true - but then, I have 10 cages, and I hire someone to help me clean cages. Does that make me bad?

Lisa also over-charges for her gliders and told someone who was in chat last night that she wasn't allowed to see or handle the joey she was getting till it was time to take her home. Wouldn't let her see where she keeps her cages, was just told they are in the garage. That sounds pretty shady to me.

Have you ever spoken with Lisa? She is a warm, good-hearted person who LOVES sugar gliders. She has to protect herself from the nastiness of the glider community.

I have a glider from her. I'm embarrassed at how little she charged me for an extremely unique color - I would have paid twice what she charged, and when she told me the price, I had to question her. So - I certainly was NOT over-charged. $175 for a standard gray is well within the going average from most good breeders, although certainly lower than the price PP charges.

The glider I got from Lisa was sweet, trusting and affectionate from day one. I've gotten gliders from much smaller breeders that I can't say that about!

I'm not trying to advertise from Suncoast - only to share my experiences and my opinions. I don't like seeing a good person bad-mouthed because she has more breeding pairs than some others. The fact is, many "smaller" breeders have that many pairs - you just don't hear about it, because they are "saints" in the glider community.
