Normal weight?
Normal weight?

I know I asked this question a week or so ago but I need to know and average. Our Kai is 78 g. Candy I think said he was under weight. He is 1 1/2 years old. What is the normal weight for adult gliders? He looks just fine and eats well. Exercises a lot. Omi on the other hand is really chubby looking and very squishy. He's 133g. I've cut way back on treats for him.

I think normal weight is 80-120 grams. I believe that is what I've read on here before.

And I love his name! Someone I know named their baby Kai. It's Hawaiian for ocean.

My vet also says 80-120 but I've seen others say 100-150. Seems to be quite a range. Coincidentally, mine all fall between 80-120 though. My males all weigh more than my females too.

My daughter named him Kai because she said it means gently flight over the ocean or something like that in Japanese.
quote:

The SUGAR Group has three years worth of weight data (thousands of weights) for captive bred gliders. Currently, here are the "norms"
2009 - Average weight of an adult glider = 107 grams

2010 - Average weight of an adult MALE glider = 114.6 grams
Range of "normal" = 85 - 139 grams

Average weight of an adult FEMALE glider = 99.6 grams
Range of "normal" = 63 - 133 grams

Average weight of a juvenile MALE glider (juvenile = 8 weeks - 9 months ) = 82.4 grams

Average weight of a juvenile FEMALE glider = 69.9 grams

2011 data is in, but I just don't have access to that database from this computer.

I found an article where some researchers in australia weighed sugar gliders living in the wild. the study was published in 1984. this is what they found for the average weight of sugar gliders in the wild:
male: <1 yr: <115g; 1 - 2 yrs: 100 - 150g; 2 - 3 yrs: 120 - 160g; >3 yrs: 120 - 160g
female: <1 yr: <100g; 1 - 2 yrs: 90 - 130g; 2 - 3 yrs: 100 - 140g; > 3 yrs: 100 - 140g

Where are we going wrong then? Omi is pretty squishy and Kai looks and feels fine but according to the Sugar Group, he is underweight. They are on the same diet.

Have you noticed and food aggression between the boys? Do you have multiple feeding stations? Would you say Omi is dominate? If you had to say do you think Omi has a bigger frame than Kai? Do they both have nice weights in proportion to their frames? What hobbies do each of the boys have [Example. My Luna loves to make nests and my Rory loves to run in her wheel]?

Magdals, thank you for the reference. It is a really fun reminder that American gliders were breed to fit in your pockets when you compare it with Val's data.

is it possible that glider's who nursed in the pouch with a sibling will be smaller in adulthood than those who were born without a twin?
vicious, I like the question about omi and kai's hobbies. if one glider burns more calories on the wheel, it could help explain a lower weight

There is no food aggression except over yogies. Kai looks good for his frame. Omi however is really quite heavy for his frame.
quote:

but this is the wild glider, different from domesticated. I have four gliders and all four range from the smallest adult female to the largest adult male. they are all fed the same every day. each and everyone is different

i think gliders are like us, like dogs and every other animal. I am five foot 3 my BF is four foot nine, my other BF is sixt foot five. My great dane weighed in at 125 but was the smallest off all danes. the largest was 200 pounds. Everything animal comes in all shapes and sizes....that's my belief

Ths all depends where in the wild the study was conducted. Gliders in the North of Australia are smaller (more like the ones in US) than those down south. I have petaurus breviceps breviceps which are the southern gliders and many of them exceed 200g at maturity. One of my females was over 300g and still didn't have the typical fat glider boobies.

My 2yr old male is a fine size and he weighs exactly 100g
My two 10month old female twins both weight 75g each, they also look fine.

Every glider is different. YOU should be able to tell if your glider is underweight or overweight. Don't worry too much about what is seen as 'normal'. I thought the ideal range can weigh between 80-150.

If your glider is underweight, you will probably notice. If it is overweight, you will notice. If it is a little chubby, then just cut down the treats for a few days... x

Does he look chubby? Every glider is different. I like mine to carry a LITTLE extra weight over winter to cope with the drop in temperature but chubbing them up is hard work! They get 3 cubes each of their mix (just inder 2 tablespoons) but they're all still on the low end of the weight scale. They're just too active lol x

Is there any way to tell their weight without bringing them to the vet? I'm going to be bringing Rou to get nuetured very soon [he is definitely warming up to me but it has been set back fro the past couple of days 'cause I have a bad cold :/]
but I want to make sure he is at a normal weight before I bring him.

A scale that weighs in grams will work, my b/f has an old paint scale and it weighs in grams thats what we used, also one of our boys sat still long enough but the other two we put them in their pouch to weigh them, then weighed just the pouch and subtracted the pouch to figure out their real weight...
