This is not true. More times than not it is communication. Gliders will make a sharp hiss at each other when they want the other to stop something, or if they are annoyed. They make long-softer drawn out hisses preceded by or followed by a series of rapid clicks or a short bark when they are communicating with another member of their colony.
Gliders that 'hiss' with constipation or a UTI make terrible almost screaming like hisses. It's very very sad to listen to while they are going. That being said, I've a few gliders here that will hiss while they poo and there is nothing wrong with them- vet checked for UTI's and are not constipated.
It is always good to get checked out though, if you notice the hissing while they are urinating or defecating.
