We have a finished basement, so storm time is basement time. It's quite nice that we can just lounge around (with our inflatable mattress, our couch, TV, mini fridge, etc with the pets without worry. The suggies' home is already in our basement living room and I keep some frozen fruits and veggies/ already cooked chicken in the freezer down here.
Storm checklist-
*Batteries in lanterns/flashlights- all within reach
*Water
*food
*blankets- extra thick comforters within reach.
*first aid kit (both human and critter with E-collars)
*air mattress within reach with bedding if we have to sleep in basement
*all critters in basement- cats locked in office so they cannot escape, dog on his dog bed, and gliders moved into center of the living room away from stairwell.
*cellphones fully charged.
*house phone that is not a walk around (they need power to work and the charger base needs to have electricity running through it- a wall phone with a cord does not).
*The number to the electric company in hand
*Towels (HitchHiker's guide has shown time and time again, keep a towel handy)
*Fire extinguisher on each floor (general safety precaution)
*MP3 player with soothing music for skittish critters (to drown out the noise)- important for my dog who is terrified of storms and the suggies like it too.
