I don't personally feed my gliders bananas, because I heard from a few people that they are bad for them. Is this really true?

I've never heard this but I've also never really heard of a glider enjoying bananas. Mine won't touch them.

I don't think they are 'bad' for them, but I think most won't touch them. Mine don't like bananas. With anything else, all things in moderation

I don't feed them because they hate them enough to become sticky flying missals.

I tried bananas with Aristotle when I first brought him home (About 9 weeks OOP) and he wanted nothing to do with them. Not even with a little peanut butter dabbed on a couple of the pieces. *However*... I tried them again recently and sliced some up for each of the boys (Ari who is now almost 19 weeks OOP, and Zeus who is just over 9 weeks OOP now) and an interesting thing happened... Ari ate ALL of his, yet Zeus wouldn't touch ANY of his. Now, the biggest difference I can think of is that Ari was with me as I prepared their dishes that night, so he actually got a piece before I served it. (He normally hangs out in my shirt while I make their food, and likes taste testing everything before I put it in.) So... maybe hand feeding him a piece as a treat is what provoked interest, where there was none before?? Or maybe it is an age thing... I'm not sure. Since then I have actually taken to freezing the bananas before serving them. WAY less mess btw... and he seems to love them now. I'm going to try hand feeding Zeus some later and see if he will eat them if they are introduced as a 'treat' to him first too. I'll let you know what happens there, as that may be a possible solution. :)

I just fed Mortimer, and Scarlett some bananas. Bertia is in another cage, and hasn't gotten up yet(she's usually not up until around 11:00). Anyway, Mortimer LOVES it!!!!! He's *still* eating it! Scarlett on the other hand, took a few nibbles, then threw it down. I guess bananas probably won't be her thing, or she could change her mind about them later on. But bananas will be on the menu from now on. Off and on of course. You gotta have variety I'll let Bertia try some when she wakes up

I'm not even sure why my little one had no interest, and now loves them... so I explained the variables so that maybe someone might find them helpful.

Thanks GliderMommy and StellAnLunna. Thanks *everyone* Just a short update...Bertia is not eating her bananas. Maybe her and Scarlett will come around, (or maybe not) but at least I now know that bananas is another safe option for them to have

Mine LOVE Banana, the only reason people seem to refrain from feeding (that i've heard of) is because it has a Cal:Ph ratio of 0.02:1! For that reason, mine only get it every so often, or if I'm using fruits/veg that have a high ratio. I don't like the idea of just adding a lot more calcium powder, i'd rather try and get the 2:1 from using fruits, but obviously adding banana to a mix throws the ratio waaaaay off x

I didn't know that the calcium, phosphorous ratio of a banana was so low. Thanks Helen. I will definitely keep that in mind.

Oh, I got that wrong! Sorry! 0.02:1 is the ratio of sweetcorn! (Again, why I don't feed it), Banana is 0.3:1, but still very low. As long as you account for the low calcium you will be fine feeding it, but I just prefer to offer it as a treat sometimes as it's hard trying to balance out the full diet if I use much of it x

I was wondering if the banana peels were good or bad. I took a banana with the peel still on in with my gliders and some liked the peel instead of the banana. Some ate some of the banana also, but I just thought it was weird that a couple wanted the peel. I didn't let them have it, just in case, but if it won't hurt them then why not let them have a bit.

I've always gone by the rule of if I wont eat it, don't feed it. I don't eat banana peel lol so I don't let them. I have no idea if it's safe for them or not, so I won't risk it x
