Hey everyone, So I have started a petition to get Sugar Gliders legalized in CA. Ive been posting on other forums and so I'm trying to reach as many people as possible. You are my first degree of support. You are Glider owners, potential owners, breeders, lovers, and enthusiasts. If I can't get your support I don't see how I can get any support. I've contacted a senator in Georgia who help legalize them there. Below I will post the link. Please sign it. Give me feedback. Post the link on your Facebook, Twitter and any other site or forum you may be apart of. Thanks! mhall10 Joey 40 Posts jj i can kinda see where your coming from but at the same time no, there are plenty of state the same as Cali and they are legal there, but Hawaii is totally different from Cali, they have different climate and different vegetation, so where i can see your point i dont agree with it, If a glider got out in northern Cali it would stand no chance of living at all, to to judge cali as a whole based on southern cali having the same general climate as florida is at the same time a bad example because they are legal in florida and florida has nt had a ECO crash. And for tem to impact the local eco system they would have to be a mass escape from a mill breeder because 2 or 3 would most likly be picked off by morning JimmyB Starting Member 9 Posts Exactly , also every state surround Cali allows them. So they could easily make their way into California If such a thing were to happen And it hasn't. And it won't, Honestly hawaii is the only state I understand because it is a small group of tropical islands. They are no danger to Cali's Eco system. Also southern Cali is a lot of desert. I appreciate your feedback though jj. This petition has only a positive outcome. Thanks! mhall10 Joey 40 Posts and also jimmy california from what i know has a general exotic ban on pets, so to lift the ban on just one exotic animal would be very very difficult, it stinks that they law is in place though, most animals that are classified as exotic have becoem very common house hold pets in other states, but best of luck to you mhall10 Joey 40 Posts Category: B Summary of Law: It is unlawful for persons to possess wild animals unless the animal was in possession prior to January 1992. Wild animals include, but are not limited to the following orders: Primates; Marsupialia; Insectivora (shrews); Chiroptera (bats); Carnivora (non-domestic dog and cats); Proboscidea (elephants); Perissodactyla (zebras, horses, rhinos); Reptilia (crocodiles, cobras, coral snakes, pit vipers, snapping turtles, alligators); etc. and here is a link to a list of animals illegal in California, www.bornfreeusa.org/b4a2_exotic_animals_state.php?s=ca
good luck but there are things that are so common that are illegal mhall10 Joey 40 Posts and im not saying i dont think they should legal i just want you to know whats in place now so it kinda gives you a idea on what you have to over come
FeathersNFur Super Glider USA 232 Posts Actually the way that law is written it may be easier than you think to get sugar glider exempted. If you put your best case forward and get a letter from the lawmaker in Georgia that helped make them legal there you have a good chance. You are not trying to make it legal for Marsupials, the reason they made marsupials illegal is that they don't want people having Kangaroos and Wallabys as pets. You need to put it in your letter that you want them to change their law to read :marsupials (except sugar gliders). You need to give them facts, keep your emotions in check and proof read your document. Good Luck, Feather JimmyB Starting Member 9 Posts Thank you guys for such a large response! I did research the laws in California. They have a blanket ban on all marsupials and certain other exotics. I myself own a snake and gecko which are exotic animals but perfectly legal here even though both could technically live in the wild if released. (though I would never do that) I haven't heard back yet from the senator in Georgia. If I don't this week I'm going to try and reach him by phone. Yes they could possibly survive in Cali but thy have a very specific diet as you all know and I don't think they could get the proper nutrition. Thank you all for the great response and feedback. Let everybody know about it and send the link to everyone. Thanks! Here's the link again: www.change.org/petitions/californial-state-legislators-legalize-sugar-gliders-as-pets-in-california

Just my two cents on the eco thing. I realize that our weather is quite different from Cali and Hawaii. Just sayin'...cats are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY worse when let out on the loose than sugar gliders. But, what do I know! <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"> Totally agree.. JimmyB Starting Member 9 Posts I also agree. I see stray cats everywhere here. The sad truth is that Sugar Gliders would just become prey to all the predators Cali has. There are A lot of predators here. JimmyB Starting Member 9 Posts Every little thing helps. What do you know! JimmyB Starting Member 9 Posts I def want to make sure that the people who release them are prosecuted and that they are well cared for but it would be hard to keep them out of pet stores. But I promise I will make sure to address all that and try to take care of it. JimmyB Starting Member 9 Posts Thats a good idea. Thank you for that. I'll make sure to bring that up. But first we need to get them to listen. So the more voices the louder we are. lancegtx Glider 194 Posts Ive never seen a little dog in a purse here in illinois. However I think I saw atleast 3 before I left the airport in cali. Just saying, it could go eaither way. It could be great because it might raise awareness about the species. However I would be very afraid It would become the next glamour pet the first time paris hilton shows up with one on TV. I would be all for licensed ownership though! Not really a relevent argument eaither way, just a thought.
