People of the glider community:
Petluv and I have tossed up the idea of a glider gathering in the West Virginia and Southwest Virginia area. There are a lot of glider owners around here, but not a lot of good solid information. I am writing this to see if there is 1.) any interest; 2.) what sorts of activities would people like to see at this gathering? We know that we would like to have a wheel demo, toy making, and nail clipping. Petluv is even looking into getting some vets to volunteer their time to come and give wellness exams free of charge or at a discounted price. Right now, we are just trying to gage interest from the community. We are thinking sometime this summer, June maybe.
If you are interested, please sign up on the form at the link provided. thank you

There is a gathering in the Arlington area on Sept. 15 this year - The MonkeyPalooza. Last year's MonkeyPalooza gathering had a good turn out. I believe they already have quite a few people signed up for this year. So, if you go forward with your own gathering, be aware that the folks in your area may have been planning to attend another event, so don't put them too close together in time. And, if there isn't a lot of interest for you, then you guys can plan to go to Arlington and have a great time there. ;)

Thanks Val - I was aware already of Aimee's gathering which is why we are looking into June in case people want to attend both. The few local people I know aren't able to travel the 4-6+ away especially after school gets back in session and we'd love for this to be a small, more intimate gathering to meet more suggie owners in this area!

I think I would rather try to go to something not in the NOVA mess. I have family up there that I do not see much as I hate the traffic and the mass of humanity. I would like to see some sort of gathering if possible but travel and away overnight is a problem right now as we do not have any glider sitters and I do not want to haul all 11 with us! I'll Bump this to see what is new as far as ideas and if something is coming together.

Come on, there's got to be more than three glider owners from this site in this area.

I've talked to 2 others in the chat room recently, but don't remember if they actually registered on this site or not. One was from Wytheville and the other I believe in Roanoke - we talked about vets in the area! Hopefully they'll see this sooner rather than later to join us!

I am not in that area... but I love the idea. I wonder if I could try and organize one for the Tampa Bay area. There have got to be plenty of suggie owners down this way. (Then again, you seem to have had the same expectation for your area and I guess there is no guarantee on participation based on proximity.) Any tips on how I could go about arranging something like this?

Well lucky for you, there is already a glider gathering planned in Florida this year - the SGGA! http://sgga.info/
Florida is a hot spot for glider ownership, our area isn't as much, but that's OK as I like the idea of a smaller intimate gathering if I'm helping to organize it

Calling the park authority tomorrow to find out if we can rent the activity center with the suggies - other alternatives in the area are sheltered picnic areas, but I'd prefer to have it indoors. Hotel conference rooms are too expensive for such a small gathering, but if there are any ideas for other types of places to try, I'm open to calling around!

Right now we are looking at Christiansburg, VA, but Roanoke is another possibility if that would make a difference in more people being able to join us. Its about 4 1/2 hours from DC, 3 from Richmond, 2-3 from parts of Tennessee and North Carolina, and 45 minutes+ to portions of WV.

Update! We are able to rent a room at the community center so we're looking at Saturday June 23rd in the afternoon. Please let us know if you would like to join us :)

I will have to find a hotel room on the relatively inexpensive side..any idea on admission price wise? That way I can get everything together. :}

We're looking at $5 to $10 per person/family just to cover the cost of renting the room. Depends on how many people come - i will try to put together a list of hotels in the area that allow pets. I know there are several right off the interstate that should be reasonable :)
