mistresslynn, I guess it's you'r choice if you feed pinkies too you'r glider's, but, PLEASE take into consideration on what DoubleBogey and Petluv15 said, do research, make sure you know the pinkies are healthy and you know were they are coming from. They are only looking out for you'r glider's, They don't want you coming on saying you'r glider passed because you feed a sick pinkie. I'm not saying you'r glider is definelty going to pass because you feed a sick pinkie, but there is a possiblility it could, you could be that one odd number, please do reshearch, because it's not worth the risk.

So, for anyone else who is reading - here are some risks to consider with FACTS from public recalls of pinkie mice.

In 2008, 2009, and 2010 alone there were large recalls of frozen pinkies, chicks, etc. due to Salmonella contamination with over 400 confirmed cases in humans JUST from handling across more than 17 states in the US - not to mention it affected another country as well. Many animals that consumed the pinkies were affected - though the articles focus on the human infections more. I could probably go out and pull several recall notices - but hopefully this will suffice to show there IS a risk to consider.

To "repair" the situation, I believe they started irradiating the carcasses before shipment. I haven't looked into that but it sounds SUPER healthy.

Interestingly enough - here is a recall of mice feed from less than 3 weeks ago (4/30/12)due to salmonella contamination. Bearing in mind that freezing does NOT kill salmonella. So, mice fed this food would potentially have salmonella and thus the cycle begins. This article is the official recall notice from the Ohio Dept of Agriculture.

Admittedly, this is a pet feed...and commercial likely uses another feed source - but could be from the same company - do you all see how easy it can happen?

Im not looking for your respect or approval on this issue. If you dont like the risk dont take it. Its not going to change my thoughts or feelings on the subject. Ive said all along that its up to the individual. Im not arguing with anyone either because for me there is no fight. Im not looking to change your mind and you will never change myne.

I answered someone who asked if anyone had experiance with this and that was all. I didnt encourage or discourage anyone to do anything. I stated the facts for my situation.

Wow, mistress...I haven't seen anything "nasty" from anyone but you. Snide and sarcastic remarks when someone is giving factual information is not necessary. You have a different opinion and you are willing to take a risk that most of us aren't. That's fine...they're your gliders. Just don't act like saying "give me a break" and "please" isn't being inflammatory.
I'm glad that your gliders are doing well with the pinkies. I hope that they continue to do great whether you feed pinkies or not. Just don't make it so that new owners feel like there are no risks involved. Kim and Sara were giving facts that should be considered before any owner feeds pinkies. NOT necessarily YOU...just in general.

I never once said there was no risk, just that it was one im willing to take. I havent been nasty at all with my comments. I gave my opinion, if you take it as nasty then thats how you take it. Im glad there is lots of info out there for whoever wants it.

I feed pinkies- bred in my home. I think the gliders benefit from them and will continue to feed them on a regular basis.

Im not insulting anyone. I was asked why and i told why. I believe it is best for my gliders. I am not the only one who has made comments that were not needed. I have every right to stand up for what i believe in.

I am one of those that would not do it bc I can't stand knowing I contributed to killing another animal. I guess if my gliders refused any other source of protein I would have to suck it up and get some but I would def not get them from a pet store.....I would probably breed my own like we do mealworms. Then either have a vet euthanize humanely or do it myself *shudders *. . But if I ever had to, it would be bc it IS the best for my gliders. Thankfully God and some awesome breeders blessed me with gliders that LOVE other sources of protein.

I agree there is risk in feeding pinkies to any animal when you don't know what it's breeding conditions were...and I think that could be fixed by breeding your own or getting from a friend who does. If a glider breeder or supply store started selling pinkies frozen just as they do mealworms and other insects, maybe others wouldn't be so put off...I still wouldn't unless it was a last resort like I said....but again, that is just my opinion and opinions are like buttholes...everyone has one lol.

You do realize that by feeding chicken you are also contribution to the killing of animals, right? At least i know my feeder animals live happy lives until they are food . same can't be said about that chicken you feed.
