I thought it would be a good idea to take the boys out of thier sleeping pouch and let them climb around thier cage so they could poop and pee before tent time. So, I took the sleeping pouch out of the cage and they ran around thier cage for 5 minutes and then I tried to get them back in the pouch to transfer them to tent and had the door open. Ruger jumped on the door then on the couch and then on the floor. My cage is on a table so he went under the table. That is such a moment of panic! Luckly he came out from under the table and I was able to grab him...but I had to grab him by the tail. He was biting me so hard and I felt horrible but I had to get him back in the cage. I also felt bad because we didn't get to have tent time. They wouldn't go back into thier pouch even with treats :( So, from now on I am going to be living with them pooping and peeing in the tent with me. Just have plently of baby wipes around to clean up!

It's scary isn't it? When I feed my boys sometimes my little one will decide to come out. Theni have to go get him and then his brother gets out. . It's an endless cycle

Aw, I always have a tough time transferring to/from tent time. When I got my gliders from a breeder, she had them in a pouch wrapped up in a pillow case. I've kept that pillow case with them and lately if I open the door and hold the pillow case open at the bottom of the door (not covering the door, just open at the bottom) they'll climb right in! Another trick is to get them used to the rattle of your treat container. Then when you shake that, they'll come running and you can drop one or two into a pouch or a pillow case to get them to climb in. I've had 1-2 escapes a long time ago, but none within the past year or so. They seem to care more about yogurt drops than freedom :)

Ok, I just have to comment because I guess I just don't understand this.

You're not supposed to let them OUT of the cage to do their business before tent time.... you can wake them and let them run around INSIDE the cage. When they are done going potty, you remove them for playtime.

Next, I don't understand the big freak outs if they jump out of their cage and onto you. I have 7 and from day one as most people know I carry them on me, but even still, I haven't had an issue with any of mine...even before they were fully bonded. Even as joeys I could open the door, put my arm in,...they sniff, maybe give a nip (my new twins!!!) then climb onto my arm. I gently pull my arm out as to not startle them then I walk thru my house into the bedroom where they play....if they trust you,...not even saying they have to be totally bonded, but if they trust you and you don't do anything to frighten them...loud noises, sudden movements, I have never had an issue with any of my gliders jumping off of me.

The twins are my most recent additions and I've had them for less than 3 months and for the majority of that they just follow the lead, and now they are more often than not the lead..... I opened the cage lastnight and had 5 gliders hitting my chest almost all at once. I don't even have to put my arm in now, just open the door and they jump right to me.


This is Caci, one of my twins 2 days after coming home. Notice how I just place my arm there and he's sniffing. If you are still and let them come to you they normally sniff, then slowly climb onto your arm. Again, pull your arm out of the cage slowly as to not startle them. They like to be high so odds are they will begin climbing up your arm to your shoulder. Caci headed right for my head and would ride either smack dab on top or he'd climb around back and hang onto my messy bun. If they climb on you and you don't move, then yes, chances are they are going to lock on a target ie; their cage and jump off of you. Move slowly but deliberately to keep them from locking on a landing site and you shouldn't have any issues with them randomly jumping off of you resulting in you panicing then having to chase them down....that is NOT a good thing.

Mine just poop and pee inside the tent & on me. It's okay. Just clean up afterwards. :)

May I offer some advice? Don't chase if you have a glider out. Just put their stinky pouch down on the ground and give them a little space so they will feel safe to go in it. They WANT what's familiar. For example, when we first moved to Augusta--new apartment and all--Catwoman got out. We just opened the cage's side door and she went right back in it--after a few panicked moments where I worried she might chew on the electrical cords, or run out of the bedroom, etc.

Lastly, please don't ever, ever, ever, ever grab a glider by the tail. You could potentially break it and it could potentially end in amputation.

I just had an escape too, not even 10 minutes ago. I'm trying to get my boy to get used to sleeping in my shirt and had his pouch under my hoodie and he found an little space and ran free! All over the couch and the living room, so I stayed a little bit behind him (slowly) and put the pouch in front of him, but he'd crawl over it, so I'd repeat. Finally I noticed my b/f's ice tea on the table so I grabbed the straw and led him up to my arm with it. He sat still long enough for me to put my arm in the cage where he got distracted by all his toys. When it tent time I just kinda do the same thing and lead him up my arm with a treat.

I keep a fleece blanket around. If an unbonded critter gets loose, I use the blanket to get them back under control - it doesn't scare them, I don't get bit, everyone is happy.

Jazz - if I read it right she was saying that she took them out of the pouch to run around inside the cage to let them go potty before taking them to the tent. I don't think that she was letting them loose.

I wasn't letting them out of the cage to go pee - it was inside the cage. I also understand not to grab them by the tail but I had no other option. Their cage is in our rec room which is attached to our basement. So if he got out from under the table I don't think I would have seen him again - they aren't bonded yet so Ruger is not a treat eater - the only thing he seems to like are yoggies and that is hit and miss.

Its your pet...you can let them go potty however or wherever you want as long as you know you wont lose them. I personally take mine out in their sleeping pouch, sit on the floor in the room where my tent is and lay a piece of newspaper out and pull or roll them out of the pouch onto it and they just stand there and shake/potty. Once they are finished they will climb right onto me and I will crawl into the tent with them on me. I also do the same if I am taking them out during the day. I know mine wont/hate using the potty in their sleeping pouch so I will do the same routine and let them go then when they crawl on me I will go about doing whatever it is I am doing around the house. After a few minutes If I have them they will crawl in my pocket and go back to sleep. If my fiance has them they will go in her bra and go to sleep. Like I said, dont ever let anyone tell you what you CAN and CANT do with your pets. Only what their opinion of what you SHOULD or SHOULDNT do and you can go from there...its your decision, they are YOUR pets arent they?

LMAO...manick does this to me almost EVERY morning. Little does he know I have to go to work and he just doesn't understand why mommy gets irritated after the 4th-6th jump on her!
