Is it possible for Penelope (our mama) to reject only one of the Joey's? We were gone for a few hours and when.we got home one was laying at the bottom of the cage. I tried to warm him up, but he passed away. He appeared as though he was about 1/2 the size of the girl. Penelope then wouldn't feed the other Joey, so I fed her. I put her back in the pouch and both Penelope and Buster have been in there ever since and Penelope cleaned her. I have my alarm set for 2 hours from now to get back up and feed her again. Any suggestions would help.

Has the mommy ever raised babies before?
Did the baby who passed away have any hair?

From my own experience with Banana (who never raised one)

she could reject both or on different days... sometimes a week apart... bottom line KEEP CLOSE. don't over check just stay close enough to listen to what is going on. I would work on a rejected joey kit ASAP check out Suz's www.suzsugargliders.com/handraisingajoey.htm it is a great resource.

I wish you luck, keep us posted.

Awe - I'm so sorry. Yes, it is possible for her to reject one and not the other. Make sure you are feeding extra protein so mom can produce milk. Also, get a scale and start weighing the joey every day to make sure it's gaining weight. Look the joey over very carefully for any scratches or bite marks, especially on the face.
You can find information on suz's site as mentioned above.

This is her first time. She rejected the little girl too I have been feeding and taking care of Joey all night and this morning. She seems to be doing good. She's active. Penelope doesn't want anything to do with her. So it looks as though I'm mama.

how old is mama? definitely make sure you go to suz's site so you are feeding the right thing, at the right feeding times. you'll need to make an incubator too to keep the joey warm enough.

re: a scale for the joey... you need one that measures in *tenths* of a gram, not just one gram increments. it's possible to find one on Amazon for under 10 bucks.

I would definitely see about getting a rejected joey kit from suz' site - be SURE to let her know that you already have a rejected joey; she can expedite the kit for you. I got one from her when I decided to become a breeder, just in case I ever need it and I definitely recommend her kits.

I would recommend getting your male neutered ... find a vet you can trust. and maybe give them another chance... but at strike two I would put my foot down. if you live in the AZ (or near) I have the name of an excellent vet.

PM me for details
