I gave my guys a little coconut oil last night for the first time. When I went to remove their food this morning I noticed Penny had diarrhea (she's my big eater so she probably ate most of it). I hadn't expected that but I can see where it could happen. My question is should I be concerned? Is there something I should be doing other than making sure she stays hydrated? Thanks!

I'm not sure but I think coconut is one of those treats that should be fed in moderation. Maybe try some canned pumpkin. Not pumpkin pie but plain canned pumpkin. Never heard of giving coconut oil/water to gliders before. you can also visit the sweet spothttp://thesweetspot.forumotion.net/ and ask.

Thanks Lisa! I have used canned pumpkin with my dogs when they've had diarrhea so I will give it a shot. Someone credible here has fed coconut oil on occasion in very small amounts so I thought I would give it a shot too. They ate it all so they must have liked it but maybe I gave them too much. I wasn't thinking and gave them avocado last night too so they got a very fatty meal . Hopefully the diarrhea won't persist. Thanks again!

I would think to not use pumpkin in this case (and with dogs with diarrhea too). You would primarily (with dogs anyway) use canned pumpkin to loosen things to get it moving when/ if they are constipated. I think it would be better to use a probiotic in the case of diarrhea to make ensure good flora in the gut. But, since you know the coconut oil was the cause of the diarrhea I would also expect it to resolve quickly if you don't give them any more. Hydration is definitely key...she should be okay as long as her losses aren't greater than what she takes in.

Thanks Sara Sue. She doesn't want to drink water but I think the diarrhea has subsided, I have heard that canned pumpkin is good for both diarrhea and constipation. Interesting that it can work for two opposite ailments . I will continue to keep my eye on her and make sure she drinks.

I believe you guys....I've just only heard of it being used for constipation. I know it worked wonders for my dog.

I wonder if maybe too much fat was indeed the culprit. Ming and Max don't care for avocado, which I had offered as a treat. I give my 2 girls 1/8 tsp. twice a month and it has never given them diarrhea. My vet says their skin and coats are gorgeous. Also, I had very little fur cracking this year. I feed BML and don't know what diet is being fed here so maybe another diet doesn't work well with the oil? Only just suggesting, here. I hate it if I have given anyone any bad advice. I know my girls won't touch the gum powder paste, they are really picky-lol

@ mingsmom...Mine don't like the acacia powder on anything or mixed as a paste either.

She is fine today! I think it was the combo of too much coconut oil (I gave them about 1/2t) and the avocado. Penny is a piggie so she probably ate all the coconut oil. Next time I will be more careful and give them just a tiny amount. They are so picky I didn't even know if they would eat it, but it was all gone in the morning. Thanks everyone!
