My glider's aren't on a BMl, leadbeaters, ect. diet, they just get a good supply of fresh fruits, vedgies, scrambled egg w/ cottage cheese, berries, well cooked chicken, and vedgie and fruit flavored baby food. (they don't eat all of these everynight, I just spread it out.)

Is this OK for them, or do I need to get them on a BMl diet? If it's not good, why? What's missing from their diet?

I was also wondering if glider's can have oranges.

Search diets in gliderpedia-I use the 50/25/25 protien/fruits/veggies, with cooked chicken, tofu hamburger style meat crumbles, egg, and yogurt as a protien source. You have to be very careful of the calcium to phosphorous ratios, and a lot of people add a calcium supllement like rep-cal. I would stay away from the baby food, especially the fruit and veggie ones. Real fruit and veggies is better for them and they also seem to like holding and manipulating the food. I sometimes use the turkey and chicken baby food for protien variation. You could also use HPW or BML diets, or Priscilla. There are a few good ones out there. Just stay away from pellets, especially as a main food source. Oranges are okay in moderation, but should not be fed to younger gliders or joeys.

May I ask why you are posting this annonomously?

They can have oranges sparingly I believe.

I am not the best to help with the whole diet question, but a lot of people here feed 50/25/25 - 50% protein, 25 fruit, 25 veggie including me sometimes. As long as to pay attention to the ratios with the veggies and fruit you should be fine.

Research here there is a ton of diet information.

I am sure someone else will come along and help better than me.

Other than the baby food your diet looks fine. As others have said the most important thing is 50% should be protein and the other is 25% veggies and 25% fruits. The other thing is make sure that your staying as close as possible to the 2:1 Ca:PH ratio's. They can have fish and shrimp as well in moderation. Mine seem to be doing fine with the chicken and scrambled eggs as their main source of protein but I include a leadbeater's mix cube each night as well. Sometimes a small bowl of yogurt. If you need the ratio chart someone will post it for you just let us know.

No, you have to find what's healthy and go from there. It isn't about convenience. I don't know how much more proof you need that pellets are unhealthy yet you let everyone know in all the diet posts how much you love them and how happy and healthy your gliders are. How do you know? To be blunt, I had one happy and healthy one night and DEAD the next. My vet told me it was from previous YEARS of poor diet and by the time I got him, it was irreversible. A necropsy showed these results. It wasn't an educated guess. Ratios matter. Protein matters. Proper diet is a must so please don't downplay its importance.

I won't turn this into yet another post that has to prove pellets unhealthy. Anon, all I will say is please do base your decision on FACTS and not opinions. If you need those previous links, we'll be more than happy to provide them.

on the orange front your gliders will eat them but they are`nt really good for them as citrus gives them the runs and and very runny and stinky poos!!

Just an FYI... I always reboil my precooked shrimps for the gliders, just in case they were not originally cooked as thoroughly as they should have been. This has kept my suggies healthy. I only feed shrimp a few times per month, too.

Not only that Swilt, but vienna sausages?!?! Do you understand how much salt and preservatives are in those?! They're not healthy for people, let alone gliders!

They should be eating chicken, scrambled eggs, lean pork, turkey, lean hamburger.

D'oh! I missed reading that, about the Vienna sausages. You really shouldn't give those to your babies, I agree for the reasons listed.

Yogurt is another excellent protein source. Please be sure NOT to use anything sweetened with Asparatame or other artificial sweetners.

I one time gave my gliders a small piece of my preservative free turkey hot dog, and I felt bad for doing that. Yes seasoned sausage is never really good for any non human animal. Salt is a big no no, as is onion and garlic powder. I agree with kyro that pellets are not a balanced part of a glider diet. I have a few (2 or 4 pieces) in my gliders' cage because they do get up once a during the day to get a drink of water and get something to eat, but I do not want them consuming to much of it, as fresh fruits/veggies/protien are much more suited for them.
