My glider had her secound batch of joeys about a month ago, and she rejected on of them so we have been hand rasing it. She is such a sweet heart and a very strong little joey, Last night we had both of the joeys out playing together and noticed that one of the joeys is much more developed then the one we are hand rasing, Why is this?

Thanks for the help

So the parents rejected the joey you are raising but not the other one? If that is the case, there is nothing that can compare to mother's milk and parents nurturing.

But it could also be that one joey is very tiny. I have one glider that has always been much smaller than the other three.

If you are concerned, I suggest a vet visit for the hand raised joey.

It could also have something wrong with it and thats why it was rejected.

And its not called a batch.

Catman is correct on this one. A vet visit with a VERY knowledgeable exotic vet is in order.

Well im sorry for saying batch and not the term you like, but my question was not why the joey was rejected, my question was why she was so much smaller then her sister? I Have had sugar gliders for years now and this is the first time i have came across this problem and was curious if anyone knows the answer. But thank you for the information.

well rita and catman could be correct.. the baby was probably rejected because there was something wrong with it... and as rita said.. nothing compares to mothers milk. good luck.

How in the world would anyone here know why one of your sugar gliders is smaller than the other? We have no background on you or your gliders.
Have any of them seen a Vet? Have you asked your Vet? Do you keep track of their weight? What are you feeding them?Have they seen a vet(vet is important!)??Are you a breeder?

No hostility.

I don't understand how a complete stranger can come ask complete strangers what is wrong with there animals with no information what so ever.

I was asking questions.

i agree with catman. nobody here will be able to answer her question even with background info. only a vet can do that(and make sure its a good vet with lots of knowledge on gliders). maybe he can find something wrong or maybe the glider is just small. and gliders know what they are doing (or at least i like to think so) there could be something wrong with the baby or they knew it was going to be the smallest of the joeys and decided they didnt have (or wasnt worth) the energy and food the could give to the other stronger joey.

Quite often a runt of a litter is rejected. This happens with dogs, cats, rabbits, mice ... if there's one baby that's considerably smaller and weaker, it can't compete with its littermates to nurse, and the mother doesn't help it. That's nature -- survival of the fittest. This could be what happened in your case. Of course, all we can do is offer theory and conjecture as we aren't doctors, vets or biologists.

When hand raising Rocky, rejected at 2 weeks oop, he was about half the size of his sibling until about 10 weeks. He is now 6 and a half months old and the same size as his sibling. I don't know why he was rejected and will never know. There are several stories on this site about rejected Joeys. Some with happy ending and some with sad endings. You might want to do a search to read the stories. Also this sight has great information, http://www.suzsugargliders.com/helpforrejectedjoeys.htm
Just keep an eye on her weight and start keeping track of it, making sure that she is gaining weight. I used a kitchen scale in grams. In the beginning he would gain about a gram every other day, some times every 3rd day. Please know that I am not a vet and am just sharing my own experience. Rocky did see a vet the day after I started hand raising him and was given sub-q fluids, because he was dehydrated, for the first 4 days. I hope this helps.

OMG GUys.. lets be nice... she can call them batch littler or wat ever she likes.. its rude to comment on how others speak... and i sort of agree with catman we do need some background.. like wat king of milk your feeding to this joey.. i just think he said it in a way that sounded rude.. im sure he didnt mean it.. well good luck with that joey.. i hear its a very hard job to hand raise one.. i would not have the time to do it maybe a friend or grandmother would have to do it for me.. but CONGRATS ur doing great...
