What diet do you use currently for your Gliders? Why did you choose this diet? Why did you have to switch? Last question is only for people who have had to switch diets.

I feed the BML diet. My gliders came to me being fed veggies, an egg, and mealies every night. Their fur was all cracked and they did not look healthy. I changed to BML and they looked so amazing right away

I used to feed mine BML, but after one of them got really sick and died I changed pretty much everything, from the cage to the toys and the diet as well.

Main diet is now a cereal/dried meat/dried vegetable mix I got from a petshop that comes in several flavours, and daily fresh fruit and/or vegetable. As the occasional treat, I give small quantity of corn, wheat, dried fish, or nuts. If he get stressed/fall/have bad experience/get hurt, I would give a mealworm as comfort since he loves them.

I got this diet plan (minus the mealworm part, which I give in very small quantity anyway, less than 1/day) from another owners whose glider seem to be thriving. (no yellowing, no fur crackling, very curious/active...)

I will switch to a chinese HPW equivalent in the future after some research to know which brand(s)'s the healthiest.

I feed Suggie Soup because I believe it mimics a sugar gliders wild diet more than other diets and the creators who run Lucky Glider Rescue and Sanctuary worked with their vets to create the diet. They also have rehabilitated many gliders on it. The recipe is balanced so I don't have to do ratios like I would with other diets. The diet plan calls for a lot of variation which I think is very important since they are omnivores. If they get bored of the nectar staple there are also many variations the creators of the soup came up with that help it stay interesting as well. I switched from BML because my gliders would only eat their vegetables.

I feed mine HPW. Mine love it. And I give them a variety of fruits, vegetables and treats. My rescue, Ulalena, has come a long way on it. And my other babies look good too.

When I brought home my first gliders 5 years ago the most widely used diets were BML, HPW, Priscilla's and SunCoast.

I started with the SunCoast feeding plan but I am a nurse and the 'sprinkle' method of giving vitamin and calcium supplements was not an accurate way to administer these supplements. It is much easier to Overdose on supplements because a sprinkle is often much more than you realize.

At the time the recipe for Priscilla's made such a HUGE amount it did not seem practical to me for a small number of gliders (current recipe is for a much smaller batch)

I set out to find out what the nutritional content was of these diets so that I would know what gliders need and thrive on. There are no specific guidelines for gliders. In the process I found that BML was much higher in all amounts except sugar and HPW was much lower in everything but extremely high in sugar. Yet both were successful diets that gliders were thriving on. I felt BML contained too much Calcium supplement and HPW contained too little calcium in my opinion.

I wanted to feed a wider variety of fruits and vegetables than the limited list for BML allows. At that time everyone was trying to bolster the low calcium to phosphorus ratio of HPW by feeding high calcium fruits and vegetables. I found it nearly impossible to match fruits and vegetables with enough calcium to raise the ratio of the overall feeding with HPW.

I developed my own feeding plan with several recipes that provide amounts of Calcium, Phosphorus, Protein, Sugar, Fat, Fiber and Iron mid-range between the highest values found in BML and the lowest found in HPW.

You can look at my whole feeding plan here:

http://www.gliderkids.com/GKSFeedingPlan2013.pdf

My staple recipes are more concentrated so they call for a smaller per glider serving - 2 teaspoons per glider. It contains enough calcium to allow you choice of any fruits and vegetables to feed with it without concern for getting enough calcium for your gliders. The use of at least 7 fruits and 7 vegetables each week is encouraged to bring a full complement of vitamins and minerals to the overall feeding.

I have more glider diet information on my web page:

I will for sure have to try out one of your diets, Candy. I was going to try BML but you for sure changed my mind! Thank you Candy!

I actually have been using Candy's diet for years without any issues. I know there was a bit of a controversy and you (candy) took the recipe down....but like I said, haven't had any issues. My gliders are healthy and vibrant.

I feed Val's Green Variety Diet. My gliders love it, and the options/variety are fabulous. Rather than try to explain it, I am leaving the link to The Sweet Spot's Glider Gourmet section that talks about several diets, VGV being one of them. Check it out :-)

TSS is also a great resource for medical info. It's always a good idea to get familiar with it so you know what is there when you need it :-)
