Hi guys my name is Nick

i just got my first sugar glider, and i named him stitch.

well, my aunt breeds them so I got a bunch of food and some peanuts. and a pouch with a zipper and a little window he can see out.
i went to petsmart today and got a HUGE ferret cage thats 3 stories high, with plenty of toys for him to play with. so here is how my 1st day of ownership went

i pick him up. he is scared ( hes only 4 months old) so he is crabbing alot. i take him out of the pouch, and hold him tight to ease his crabbing. me and my aunt are talking about suggie ownership and telling me everything about them ( i read up as much info as i could before i made the final decision to get him) on the way home, he is in his pouch, crabbing about every 4 to 5 minutes, so i hold him tight and talk to him. i get him home, and go out on my patio as i cruise the internet for a while. every so often he will heawr a noise and jump and start crabbing.

i come inside, where i get him out of the pouch. he crabs at me as i try and get him out. well, he must have really been upset, cause he bit me a little. just a warning bite, but i coax him out with a peanut. after he finishes his peanut he jumps on me and crawls up to my shoulder. i let him hang out a while. i go to put him in his cage, just to see how he will react with his new home and his new toys. he climbs up to a corner where he sits there, looking at me. i can tell he is scared out of his little mind, so i go in to get him so he can hang out with me, seeing that im not a threat.

this is where both stitch and i discover that he can squeeze in between the bars of the cage (uh-oh)... well i get him and he crawls back up on me. i get a little pellet of food and bring him in the room with me. ust trying to get him used to my apt. he hangs out with me. i give him the food, and he chills on my bed with me while he eats. pellet gone, he starts to explore. keep in mind this whole time he is not crabbing at all, and a couple times he is exploring, i can swear i can hear him purring at a couple points. so he starts his exploration, all around the bed, until he comes to rest on my lap, exploring my jeans, and nibbling on my belt. every so often i will pet him and he will start licking my skin. now he is not shaking and he is only a little jumpy, where before he was shaking like he was frozen (its like 83 in my apt, fans off so i know its not cold) and jumping at every little thing. well at this point i decide that its time to see how he will do unsupervised for a short amount of time in his cage (that, remember, if he wanted to, could escape witht the greatest of ease)i go in there every 5 or 10 minutes or so, and he is still in there, checking things out.

i just went and checked, and yup. he knows he can escape too! he was exploring again. but i picked him up, and walked him over to the cage, he jumped on the cage and went back in, through the bars... haha

well, he is still a little jumpy only a little bit though. but i think he is adjusting extremely well, and i cant wait until he just hangs out and plays with me, and i can take him out on the patio with me, and he can chill on the desk while i cruise the internet.

ill get pictures up as soon as photobucket is done with their maintenance.

i was just letting u guys know how my very first day owning a sugar glider has been. i look forward to the years to come!

thanks for reading!

Welcome to the community. First thing to offer you is that we're all crazy here. So if you are crazy enough to accept opinions and ideas without getting grumpy, you might well fit in. Many people are crazy about their pets and they display it without restraint on forums, so here we just try to accept peoples thoughts and opinions and learn what we can.

Sounds like your new one is going to be a handful with the escaping. Best fix that. Sugars can get into bad places quickly when unsupervised.

You know that you can upload photos here. I am anxious to see.

Thanks for sharing.

Hello Nick!

I have a few suggestions for you but first I would like to tell you about my first glider.

His name was Neo and I was told that gliders were just like hamsters. That they were going to be the easiest, cleanest pet I've ever owned! They even told me vet visits never happened! Well then my little Neo got sick and I came here and my little glider world fell apart.

Everything I was told was a lie. I don't even know if the person who sold me neo knew they were lying to me. You see lots of people are lied to when they get gliders and they tell other people the lies thinking they are giving out the best information. When I got Neo to a vet he confirmed everything these guys told me was true and now i will share it with you.

Gliders do better in groups. They are colony animals in the wild and well...they're nocturnal. That means they aren't up for me to play with all day and get pretty grumpy if I try to.

They can't really just be fed pellets. Sure pellets are great for their teeth but they thrive better on a fresher diet. My vet didn't have a particular diet to recommend he just said he would feed fruits, veggies, and protein each night. A lot of people and vets debate on diets but I think the basics is all they really need unless they are sick. Just like people.
My gliders love almost all fruit. Strawberries, kiwi, apples, grapes. I just get whatever is on sale. I wont feed the apple or orange seeds and I limit citris fruit because it causes diahrea. I bet your little STitch would love some fruits!

Well those are my suggestions for you as a new glider owner. I know this might turn your world upside down so ask questions if you need to.

I can't wait to hear more stories about your little guy. He sounds pretty sweet and he had a BIG first day. I love how gliders all have a personality.

I'm on the lookout for those pictures!

oh trust me, i read up on allll the info i could. even saw a bunch of " are you sure you want a glider? check this out before you get one" stuff. i know all the drawbacks and i know it wont be easy, but im going to give it a shot. i dont know what kind of pellets they are, but i know they are very nutritional. and i know that they loooooveeeee fruits and im even planning on getting maybe some mealworms every now and then to see how he likes them. but i did buy some yogurt drops, i just havent given him one yet.

he is going crazy in his cage! he loves to explore it.

i am just happy that he is eating and drinking. my aunt already agreed that they would give me a companion for stitch if he gets lonely. maybe i will name her lilo? hehe

but i do look forward to sharing everything with you guys. but i do have some questions, based on what i have told you about his personality. now i know he is in a new home, and he is a tad bit scared, and unsure, but about how long do you think it will take for him to show signs at least, of warming up to his new home? i read that the bonding process takes at LEAST 4-6 weeks, but i was just wondering what i could expect for him to show signs of being comfortable at least with his surroundings, and what behavior i may expect to see when this actually starts to take place?

Wow thats a pretty intense question.

THere isn't really a time frame. My neo was bonded to me when we first met. he slept in my hand on the way home and I never heard him crab until we took him camping and there was a thunderstorm.

Then some of my other gliders took a while. Leia is the most difficult, I've had her a year and barely any progress. With leia if i cough she jumps and runs, with STimpy or Trinity ( my best gliders) i can almost scream and they don't move. I can go and grab them and they don't run away from me.

The fact that your glider is not staying in the pouch on the first night means he is a bit more comfortable than others. I know when I brought home Trinity she stayed in her pouch except to eat until I placed her with other gliders.

I guess it really depends on the glider about wether or not they'll bond or how soon they will, but your boy sounds pretty calm for a first day glider to me.

one more post before bedtime

i tried the thing about putting a napkin in his pouch, and he was sleeping. then i noticed he was awake and chewing on it. so i opened his pouch to take it out, and he started crabbing really loud and kinda jumped at me. i didnt flinch though...

can he just be (pissy)?

is this natural in 4 month old suggies?

i dont want him to always be a grump...

i want him to love me haha not hate me.

I have that same cage for my ferret and it will NEVER hold a glider in. the spacing is too wide, I would suggest you go to Home Depot and get some hardware cloh and cover it, the hardware cloth would be much cheaper than a new cage. I was thinking of getting a different cage for the ferret and wrap mine for a back up suggie cage

i heard that one thing you can do to help the suggie get used to ur scent ( one of those little things to just kinda help) is to take a napkin or a paper towel and rub it all over your face and your hands and arms and put it in the pouch. ya know, just to kinda help take the edge off i guess.

and yeah, im going up to home depot here in a minute and seeing what i can find to make his cage a little more "glider friendly"

haha

Get pvc coated wire, not galvanized. Galvanized is bad.

I think a piece of fabric would be better than a napkin, or put an old tshirt on the cage even. They will eat up napkins like you said.

I just wanted to let you know that we have two gliders and their names are Lilo and Stitch! My husband says Stitch is the perfect name because if you painted them blue he would look just like him. Anyways, I think Lilo would be a great name for your girl companion! Welcome to the site!

ok so i started on my cage modifying lol with the wire

i got chicken wire stuff but its covered in like, rubber?

its hardwire cloth. and a bunch of zip ties. its going to be easy just time consuming. i will post pictures when im done.

by the way, if he is out in his cage just watching me, and sleeping through the zip tyin and the cutting going on on his cage, you would say hes beeing pretty calm, huh? for a 2nd day glider?

and he slept this morning for a little bit in his roll-around ball. haha

hes so dern cute :)

yeah, I kept a bunch of my socks in my suggies cage when I first got her. Id spend the day keeping a sock or two against my skin, and then leave it near her sleeping pouch. I also would use my old shirts and things to cover her cage during the day, so that it would have my scent. it worked pretty well, and when id take her out, she'd even go and try to hide inside my socks for safety. it was cute.

yeah I got 2 of my shirts spread out on top.

he sleeps in a tiki house. is that a good alternative to a sleeping pouch? he seems to like it. its dark, cozy, and it has one of my rags underneath it that smells like me.

i cant wait until he goes into my shirt pocket :)

Welcome to the forums, and grats on your new suggie!

Hmm... one of my gliders, Sasami, likes to sleep in a little hippo bungalow toy sometimes, but she seems to like her pouch the most. She'll also sleep in between the fleece hammock at times.

I'd say get him a pouch in there, too, so he can choose. It's good to have a variety for them.

I don't know how far along you got with the cage but I understand that Home Depot also sells some type of clip that may be easier than zip ties, ask Catman he made a couple of cages and would be able to tell you what he used
