I am getting a hedgehog and i wanted to know if anybody owns them. If so i have a few questions:
1.) How are their behavoir?

2.) Are they social or not?

3.) What do they eat?

I'm still getting a suggie but i saw how cute they are, so i'm getting hedgie as well!

Even WEIRDER ... My hubby JUST got me a hedgie for Valentines Day! He told me he was getting me a flower, & I had to be home to get it into water. Then what he REALLY had was this sweet little hedgie, so, of COURSE I named her Flower!
My little Valentines Day Flower, complete with THORNS! LOL!
Anyone can PM me to ask questions or chat more about hedgies!

I have 2 hedgies. One I have had for 3 years. She is sooo sweet and nice. I spent ALOT of time with her when I first got her, Now you can pick her up and play with her she hardly ever pokes you unless I am cutting her nails.. She hates that
I just adopted a rescue hedgie about a week or so ago.. She is NOT nice at all yet. I am working with her. I just have to earn her trust first. Then it is all good.. much like Suggies. Trust is EVERYTHING!! Feel free to email me about the hedgies also!

Feel free to talk about hedgies here folks. I think it keeps things interesting when we can all learn about other animals. I would think that they are social and it would probably be best to get two, but I dont know for sure. They are interesting creatures.

Hehe, I see a little info helpdesk is needed right here!

1) It really depends on the hedgie. Hedgehogs are usually all grumpy with a few exceptions, but they all own different personalities, so it's really hard to tell. You will be able to "tame" a hedgie, a.k.a. you can learn it to be handled and some even like to cuddle, like mine do. But for the most time they sleep, they are nocturnal so they are awake when most of us are asleep. Hedgies are generally curious, but there's everything between grumpy biters to sweet cuddlers, so it really depends on how lucky you get. You can't train a hedgie to be nice, it will bite you if it wants to.

2) No, I can't say that they're "social". They aren't like suggies, coming up to you for treats and affection. A really curious hedgie will come to you and seek treats, but that's about it. Otherwise they pretty much go their own ways and just ignore you.

3) Hedgehogs are insectivores (spelling?), so their diet should mainly consist of insects. I also feed mine boiled chicken, boiled egg, different kinds of protein baby foods, peas, green beans etc. (geee, sounds a lot like suggie food ), but about 80% of my hedgie diet consist of different insects. So if you don't like bugs, then hedgehogs are nothing for you.

Hedgehogs are hermits and are always housed alone. They aren't social animals because of this, so this means you will not get a societyanimal of them. They will learn their owners voice, smell and touch, they will take treats from you, but they will not show you any kind of affection, only trust. They are cute, YES, but they have a different diet from other animals, so this makes them a bit more high maintenance.

My hedgie is a grumpy old man, but he can be sweet if he wants to

holy crap. I couldn't handle more than one species of nocturnal animal at once I barely have time for the sugars.

Hehe, well hedgies don't need all the attention suggies need. Hedgehogs don't need more than an hour of handling time every night so that they won't forget about you and then they will just run around by themselves if they aren't sleepy. So it's really not that big of a job

Rauha,
Here in the states, most breeders seem to use a mixture of several different brands & varieties of cat food. I was curious where you get the insects you feed your hedgie, as well as what varieties. I do give mealies of course but, you hear so much that they are for treats only because they are so high in fat.
So far my hedgie has a wonderful personality! She's the sweetest little walking pincushion ever!

I also use high quality cat food pebbles for my hedgie, but only as a "supplement", the main point is on insects. I use a large variety of different larvaes, puppaes, many different kind of crickets, locusts, snails, caterpillars and worms. I think that pretty much covers it

We have several good suppliers of insects over here, both homegrown and imported. Usually I stick to the live food, but most caterpillars and puppaes comes canned, so I don't have much of a choice with those two

I always try to provide as much of a natural diet for any animal I house

You can buy hedgehog food at most pet shops, they also like little treats of bugs and fruit, especially bananas! They pet shop ones can be antisocial and have behavioral problems, i recomend a breeder.
