So I am sitting at work and my girlfriend calls and says her father caught her a sugar glider....I didn't even know they lived in the wild around here..but ok. We also have a dog. I am very scared of what kind of deseises this thing has and if it will give it to my dog and myself. I am glad she is excited but I am very scared, esspecially since i know nothing about them. I have had ferrets, hampsters, gerbils, and rabits in the past but I dont know about this thing...and its WILD.

I doubt its a sugar glider its more likely a flying squirrel
2 completely different things, if its tail look flat and feather like its a flying squirrel.
The best thing would be to let it go. Catching a wild animal and caging it is cruel.

I agree 100% that it is cruel. I have not saw whatever it is. But i know it will be a huge fight when i say we can't keep it.

Sugar gliders can be "found" if someone was cruel and let them go (Catman found his), but it is unlikely he caught one for her. Rach is right-my money's on a flying squirrel. Your concerns are 150% valid.

She has taken it to two vets now to ask what it is. They both said a Sugar Glider. I'm not so sure they would know the difference. She brought it into my office and she was holding it and petting it and it wasn't scared or shakey or anything like I thought a wild animal would be.

I know several people who have gliders that were "found"

Do those vets have experience with sugar gliders? If so, then it likely is one. A picture would sure help us.

Are you prepared to provide for it if it is a sugar glider? We are here to help in whatever way you need.

I can try to get a picture of it up later today or tomorrow. I only saw it for a few minutes while I was at work. I have had a lot of animals and love taking care of animals. I just need to know that this is safe. I consider my dog a part of my family and I would die if something happened to her. I'm just scared she will get sick because of this wild animal she is bringing into our house. Both vets said that the sugar glider or flying squirrel, which ever it is, will be fine but I still worry.

I googled images of both and this is definitely a flying squirrel. Thanks for your help guys! After all of the reading I have done on the sugar gliders, it is definitely something I am interested in getting.

Thanks!

We had a person the other day in cht telling us about the sugar glider they caught, it was a flying squirrel from the photo.

From what I've read baby flying squirrels especially are more tame than most gliders XD and will go up to strangers so people think they find a sugar!

Well, good luck with whatever happens to your little flying squirrel!

I am not quite sure what the final decision will be. After taking her to our vet, she is a healty young female. She is probably about five weeks old. Her name is pikachu and she is very attatched to my gf already (running up and down her shirt and laying in her hand). We got her a birdcage for now which is what is what all of the sites recommend for flying squirrels. My dog only sniffs her and watches her in curiosity.

If she is only five wks old she you should NOT release her. She is too young. Offer her some esbilac from a syringe (remove the needle). She might try some soft fruit at this age. They make great pets if you want to keep her as a pet. But if you want to release her you probably will need to take her to a rehabber so that she doesn't get too humanized. Here is a link to the National Flying Squirrel Association Forum.

Pikachu is no longer with us. She passed away this morning. We fed her and did everything we were supposed to do but apparently she was not as healthy as we thought. She would only sit this weekend and wouldn't nibble on the fruit like she was doing. Her entire right side of her body would not move when she did try to walk. It was similar to the reaction that a person has after a stroke. We called the emergency vet and she said that the only thing we could do was put her down. We had planned on taking her to our regular vet this morning, but she did not make it that far. Thanks for your advice guys. I will definitely be back bc my gf wants a sugar glider more than anything (even more than me i think, lol)
