Does USDA licensure mean good breeders?

I got my suggies from a breeder because they said they were USDA licensed breeders and it made them very legitimate. But lately I've been reading about all these glider mills and it really creeped me out. How do you really know if your breeder is humane?

I guess mostly by doing research and the answer is NO. Just because they get a license, does not make them moral-just like any person requiring any type of licensing...doctors, lawyers, etc..

Well they did have alot of good customer ratings, but I suppose that could be made up too. I got them here www.loveablepocketpets.com/ I had to come in person to meet them at thier home... and they did interview me to test my knowledge before I could get them so it seemed pretty legit. Have you heard anything about them?

Ah! A fellow Coloradan! I truly don't know a ton about them, but if you want to pm Kissed82 (another member here), she runs a rescue very close by to them and may have better info.

Kissed 82 has a rescue facility...and is licensed and has the states approval as a rescuer....She rehomes gliders and anyone in Co. should look her up....Catman is also in that area and he is a wildlife rescuer...click on members and put in their names and you can e mail or PM either. The pocketpets I have read about in Florida do NOT have a good reputation..but I suggest you do research with Kissed or Catman...
Since you ALREADY got them...first take them to an exotic vet...second go to our home page and read about diets....read all posts here that you can and come into the chat room....many, many experienced people are in there and will be more then happy to help answer any question or concern...Do not give pellet food, no foods will garlic or onion and no chocolate....I do the Kazko diet 50% protein, 25% fresh/frozen fruit and 25% fresh or frozen veggies....see DIETS for lists of good foods and what NOT to feed...good luck..hope to see you in chat

They are not the same as Perfect Pocket Pets and they are only in Colorado. Catman is here in Colorado Springs but Jamie lives pretty close to where Loveable Pocket Pets actually is.

Thank you for the information about the one in Co..being differant....I suggested getting in touch with Catman for advise....also in his line of work he might know about the breeders and rescuers in Co....

I sent a letter to the expo center here that allows Custom Cageworks to sell. Maybe one of these people will actually listen...we can only hope, I guess.

I just looked at there site loveable pocket pets, and the only thing I have a question on is...in the diet section it says "The occasional canned fruit (low or no sugar added) will not be a major problem as a treat." Hmmm is this true, not that I have or will, but I thought canned anything is bad no matter what it has in it? Just curious. Thanks

No, that isn't true. It does matter what kind, though. There shouldn't be any onion or garlic, try to stay away from anything with preservatives and a high sugar content. Fresh foods are always ideal, but I sometimes mix in 1st stage baby food meats for protein.

Thanks for the website, it was really informative. I feel alot better about my breeder now.
Oh hey what about proteins like seafood or pork or beef? I only give mine chicken, turkey, eggs, and bugs, and they seem to be getting a bit tired of the limited options.

Ive given canned veggies before (green beans, carrots, corn) but frozen are a lot better and now I only use frozen. The only canned fruit that I have given is home canned. Oh and commercially canned apple sauce with no sugar added.

These people are legit and can be trusted. They are NOT the same as the other site with the close name. TOTALLY different and HONEST. They have been around for years and care for the suggies 100%!

To add,
It is the Colorado site that is the honest choice so that there is NO mistake!

To answer the questions "does having a USDA liscense" make a breeder reputable? No, absolutely not. Customer Cage Works, Perfect Pocket Pets, etc., all have USDA liscense.

How do you get a USDA license? It's probably not very hard.

i was told when i got my pair that i would have to have a usda license to be able to sale the joeys . i called a number i found on the net (don't remember the name), i was told you can have up to 3 breeding pair w/out a usda license. anymore than that and you would have to get one. thats here in sc, i don't know if its the same in other states or not. i don't think its hard to get a license at all. here, all i have to do is call and get the applications and send them in. but of course i don't plan on breeding any more anyway. i have only had 2 (1st was a single) sets of joeys myself and sold only that one.

You have to apply with the United States Department of Agriculture to get a USDA license. It is a time consuming and expensive endeavor. You have to allow home visits and inspections.
