Hi, I am going to be getting 4 gliders at the end of the month. There is i female and 3 males, one of the males is still intact and possibly might of mated with his mom. Is that going to be a problem in the long run? It had me a little concered . And can you remove the two siblings from there parents even tho they have been together the whole time?

I have NO idea what to tell you to do in that situation but inbreeding can cause serious problems. Serious!!! I'm not sure what you can do about it now...
Yes you can remove them, but sometimes it's not a good thing. They can get very depressed and sm (self mutilate). If they are related and you plan to keep them all in the same cage I would strongly suggest you get your male altered.

Rita, what do you do if that happens? A pregnant inbreeding situation? Can you abort the pregnancy..would you want to? I would just think that the outcome could be very bad, even fatal.

I havent gotten them yet, but the person i am getting them from said that the female might be pregnant and it would be from her son. When i do get them i am going to have him neutered. I dont understand why she didnt.

She did not say. But assuming that the intact male is in with here then most likely they have already bred. I just wanted to know what the outcome would be with the babies.

Well this is something Rita showed all of us in a forum. Read the whole thing (even the posts from the other people) I am sure every situation is not like this, but I think alot probably are and it's probably not good.

Well I definitely wouldn't abort the pregnancy. That is just as bad. If she is pregnant just let her have the joey and see where it goes from there. And definitely get the male neutered!!! :)

Rochelle - do you have any glider experience? Will this be your first time owning gliders?

The reason Im asking is - 4 possibly untamed gliders with one possibly pregnant may be more than a first time owner might want to take on.

If she is pregnant, she needs to have her babies. We have people on here who are joey savvy and can help with that.

Rochelle, to add to my post above - do you have an exotic vet that sees gliders lined up yet? You will need to get Wellness exams for all 4 right away - along with fecals on all.

And the possible Joey(s) would probably need expert vet care due to the fact that they are/will be inbred. I also agree with Rita. 4 is ALOT for a new mommy. Expecially if they aren't tame. My 2 that weren't tame (1 still isn't) was very overwhelming at first.

Have they had a fecal done recently? The reason Im pushing this is because my 3rd girl had roundworm when I got her. Roundworm is very contagious and can be deadly to a suggie if not caught in time. Fecals are SO important.

And I would have the breeder give you copies of vet records or give you the name and number of the vet who saw them so you can call and check on their health. The breeder will have to call the vet and alert them that you will call and give her permission for the records to be released. This should be done no matter who you get the suggies from - even with the most reputable breeders.
