so i just brought home 2 gliders that i picked up from a ladies house. they were fed dog food french fries and possem milk. there cage was the size of a small parakeet cage. also they both have such a rancid smell to them. im hoping that with the proper diet that will lesson. the mom is 2 and the dad is 1 1/2 years. when i went to pick them up the lady told me that the female is preggos and she didnt know how long. so here i am asking for help.

question 1> can someone help me as to what is a good diet for her to be on if she is infact preggo? i feed my other glider PML diet.

question 2. because the female has been eating french fries she is bigger. right now they are not the friendliest either. so are there signs that i can look for? she looks preggo but i cant feel her tummy right now. tho that male does seem to groom her around her pouch/cloaca. and he is protective of her.

3. is how do i go about with building there trust? 1 min they seem fine and i can pet them and the next they crab up a storm! im gonna leave them alone for a bit so they can get used to things but how can i interact with them without stressing the mom so bad?

thank you

If you are feeding PML, I would continue to do so. I hope the girl isn't preggo, if she's been fed french fries. Urgh! This is the second time I've heard of someone feeding their gliders french fries. Who in the heck does that??? I mean, we know they're not good for us...why would someone give them to a helpless animal dependent on that person for food???

I would possibly supplement a little extra calcium via nonfat yogurt. Maybe, with them being overweight, just some of the plain yogurt that you sweeten with natural applesauce (no extra sugars/no artificial sweeteners).

I feel so sorry that these babies have had that kind of life, but I am thrilled to read that you'll be taking great care of them! :-)

thank you.

I was appauld when i heard that! i wanted to give the previous owner an ear full but i didnt. ive read a couple posts about french fries and crazy things. it makes me sick!

The mom is the only one that looks abit fuzzy. the dad is normal healthy weight. thats also what is making me think she is preggo. so we shall see. but does anyone know bout why the male is constantly groom the moms pouch/cloaca? is that a sign that she is?

thank you

She could be pregnant, OR she could be in heat. Has he tried to get on top of her?

P.S.-- Congrats for showing restraint with the previous owner. Sometimes it is more helpful to just be diplomatic and then get the heck outta Dodge in a case like that!

u would probably need to have a vet check on them first off. just to be sure on health. and to see if shes preggo. the vets have their ways even if they are mean or untamed. if over weight she would probably need a vet check anyways as should the male. that is my opinion.or at least feeling her stomache would be helpful as well.

I agree that they should go to the vet for an overall wellness check. And assuming you don't know their lineage, and they may be related, this would be a good time to have the male neutered. Good luck! Kudos to you for adopting them and giving them a good home.

i agree. the male needs to be neutered, and a vet check is probably a have to anyways.

hello, i want to thank every one for the advice. The lady i had recieved them from said that they are not related that the female came from a texas breeder and that the male they got a year after her from a local breeder in chicago. but i do want to get the male fixed. ill just have to wait a month or so. they are a very crabby pair of babys. but its very funny at the same time.

if u are not very knowledgable about breeding u will HAVE to neuter him or they will mate if she is not pregnant. plus it is healthier for them when neutered. BUT it is ur choice. if it were me (heres how id do it laid out..)
vet check, male would get neutered,i would imporve their diet A.S.A.P. but in ur case u prolly won't neuter. like i said above it is ur choice but neutering him will make him healthier and if u dont know much about breeding it is the best choice.!.!. :) hope i helped!!!
