khloe is a lil over a yr old. i was playing with her and talkin to her yesterday and she was perfectly fine playing she looked really good. making noises, running around her cage and jumpin side to side. well this morning i was watchin her playin in her cage and i noticed her tail didnt good right so i turn the light on a little more brighter and was lookin at the tail and i noticed its really skinny.little and its not as fluffy as it was yesterday. but the last couple nights i have heard her makin a lot of hissing noises. i was told thats what they do when they groom their selfs. is she over grooming? i dnt know wat to do. shes still active and eats alot like normal (BML diet)

ok it scared me when i see her. i just went and checked on her and the other one and they are in seperate cages right now cause of the age difference and the size they have never had a cage mate before. so i was told to wait till they are about the same size. they are both out and playing jumpin around their cages and spining in their wheels. my baby was barking i havent really heard khloe bark yet. khloe is a yr n a hlf n lona is about 3-4 months. so its a big difference. ya i have a small problem when it comes to the vet i dont think there is one that treats exotic animals around here and shes not very trusty with ppl right now i adopted her n have had her about 2 n a hlf months. i got her a week b4 i got lona and i got lona right as it was time for her to leave her mama. so wen i do take her to the vet i dont see how the vet is gonna be able to check her out cause she stays in her pouch

I thought the same thing about my Vet checking out my crabbing little ones. Trust me, they have their ways. The important thing is to find an exotic Vet to take her to. Watch her carefully as her overgrooming could turn into Self Mutilation. You may need to put an E-collar on her if it starts getting much worse. It could be because there is another glider in the house and she knows it. She may be depressed from lonliness. Not sure but she should be checked by a Vet. If you can't locate one maybe we can help you find one in your area. Just let us know on the thread. In the meantime here is a link to an e-collar.

Please keep a close watch on her. Over grooming can lead to self-mutilation very quickly. There is no way to tell is she is going to self-mutilate so you have to watch her.

If you see signs of self-mutilation, get a milk shake straw from McDonalds or any other place that has them. Cut it length wise (Not in half) so you can spread it apart and slip it over her tail. Use vet wrap to secure it - but not so tight it cuts off her circuation. Measure her tail and cut it to the correct length so she isnt dragging long straw behind her. This is ONLY until she can get to a vet!!!

well she stopped biting (grooming her tail) her tail was actually lookin a little bit better today before i went to work. i just got home from work and i was talking to lona and than went to khloe's cage to tell her hi she came out of her pouch and sadly but she chewed her tail off. COMPLETELY OFF.....
i have found a vet close by that takes exotic animals but they dont not do after hours. so i cant take her to the vet.... shes playing in her cage, running in her wheel just like normal like shes ok. shes not biting at the wound or nothing. so im hoping she well be ok till in the morning so i can call the vet. i tried to put some antibiotic ointment on the wound but she wont let me. so pray that she well be ok in the morning. its weird how she was ok and lookin better at 2pm and now its 230am and her tail is gone

i did some extreme research on the exotic vet here in my home town and he said he treats exotic aniamls. but does not know much about sugar gliders. he said he has seen maybe 2-3 in his office and that was a once visit. he said he wouldnt know what to do for any situation. so i dont know what to do. i know there are so in the city which is a hour away from me. i called my boss and told him what was going on and he said if i miss one more day of work ill lose my job and i can not do that. so i dont know what to do.

You really need to get her to a vet ASAP!! She chewed her tail OFF?!? Is she not bleeding everywhere??? I would suggest making an e-collar right away to prevent her from picking at the wound, then, hop in the car and drive as far as you need to get her the proper care she needs...

:( i woke up this morning at 8 to start calling vets. i stayed up all night worrying about her i feel asleep about 5am and woke up at 8am. and she was already gone, she went to glider heaven. i was told more then likely she was extremely depressed and missed her old home. my friend couldnt take care of her and gave her away so i adopted her lil but. but i guess she missed her so much she couldnt handle it. it weird how they dont show any signs till its to late.

its ok. sad. i was attached to her but not as much as i am to lona. Lona would come out and stare at me and play, bark, etc.... khloe was the opposite, she stayed in her pouch unless it was dark n quiet and she didnt bark during the time i had her. but atlease shes somewhere happy now! shes playing with other gliders. I know Lona wont get upset or depressed about Khloe passing because they were in different cages and never interacted with each other...... right she wont grieve and make her self upset or depressed well see?

Starting to think I'm the only one who read this part of your post. So..thought I'd quote those pieces. Khloe should have gone to the vet the second you noticed she chewed off her tail. I told you I was in Oklahoma too, I could have given you numbers to 3 after hours vets..

RIP Khloe..

Tisha - I just now saw the rest of this post. I am feeling sick and sad over this gliders death.

The straw over her tail at the first sign of problems could have helped until a vet was found.

RIP Khloe.

yeah but like i said she was doing ALOT better her hair was growing back and everything she wasnt nippin at her tail or anything. she was playing wne i went to sleep woke up and she was dead. its not my fault. i cant lose my job. i lose my job i lose my car i lose my house. i live in a college town so its EXTREMELY hard to get a job around here. all the college students have the jobs. so i would appreciate it if u guys didnt get on my case about it. and i know you told me you would i got on here and tried to remember who u were and i couldnt remember. i talked to the vet in my home town that has SMALL experience with gliders and he said sounds like she did it because she missed her old owner and home. and ya i know about the e collar but LIKE I SAID BEFORE SHE IS STILL AT THE POINT WHERE SHE WONT LET ME OR ANYONE HOLD HER. SHE HASNT ADJUSTED YET. OR EVEN TOUCH HER. so how was i supose to put a e collar on her if she wouldnt let me touch her. wen i saw her tail missing i fought and fought to put some antibiotic ointment on it i got some on it but got a lot of bites out of it also. and she was crabbing the whole time. but tisha if you would please send me the names numbers and addresses of your vets in okc.

Not to sound rude or anything, but of course she wouldn't let you touch her. She was scared and sad. Nobody was saying you should lose your job but it certainly doesn't sound like you tried much. You're so much bigger than her it's not hard to just pick up her pouch and hold everything in but the part you need to see/touch. Yes you will get bit, but she DIED. Because you wouldn't just take her bites. I sure hope you have more courage when it comes to the glider you actually love.

Normally, we are not like this when a glider dies. But sometimes, things need to be said.

Its is very sad for this glider that she died in pain - but now to find out you really didnt care that much for her makes it even sadder. It's very difficult to find sympathy for you when you say things like that. That poor gliders died alone and unloved. How sad..

Now - let's leave it alone and concern ourselves with getting the emergency items WE need to have on hand and hope and pray we never need them.

The vet didn't get to see Khloe before she died. How can a vet tell if anything could have been done if they didn't even see the animal?

But on the other hand I'm happy to hear that Lona is getting a vet check. That is great news.

wkelsea, make sure you ask this vet what you should do if you have an emergency in the future. They should be able to refer you to someone or let you know where to go. I good vet will make sure there's an emergency plan. You can also take that list Snusie posted of vets willing to speak with other vets. I know I'm going to give it to mine next time I go in...just in case.

I don't want to add fuel to the fire, but how can the vet say that nothing could have been done?

As far as I know, we have a handful of suggie Mommy's and Daddy's that have gliders that have lost their tails one way or another.

This is absolutely untrue. While the tail could not have been reattached, there is PLENTY that could have been done, and likely it would have prevented the death of your little one.

It is a shame that she was not given that chance at life. I have had 9 gliders who have had full or partial tail amputations and every one of them went on to live full, happy, normal lives.

The area SHOULD have been cleaned up and sutured apprpriately. The bone and soft tissue SHOULD have been checked for infection. The "clean up" SHOULD have included amputating back to the next unaffected joint so as to prevent necrosis. The glider SHOULD have been given pain medication and antibiotics. X-rays SHOULD have been taken to ensure that there was no further injury to the bone on the spine or back legs (often, tails are SM'd due to leg or spine injury rather than tail injury). The glider SHOULD have been put in an e-collar and in a hospital cage. I could go on and on.
Plain and simple, the glider SHOULD HAVE seen a qualified vet immediately.
I'm concerned that you are seeing a vet that would not know these things. Perhaps he/she just said that to make you feel better. Please do not give others the impression that there is nothing that can be done if a glider SMs. This is the thinking of many years ago. We now know that there are many things that can be done - gliders should not die like this. Please make sure to pass this information along to your vet.

Okay guys, I think thats enough....

She obviously made a mistake and while its sad that the glider died because of it, we shouldn't drive her from a community where she can absorb knowledge of how to care for her gliders.

We all make mistakes and a LOT of the time other suffer from them, I'm sure none of you can say you are innocent. Now, don't get me wrong... I'm not defending her, she should have gone to a vet.I just also believe that it's better to show her the error and tell her how to fix it and then move on.

So can we please leave it? For the sake of her other glider? This forum provides valuable knowledge and she can't benifit from that (and other can't benifit from knowledge she may have.) if she is afraid of being told she is a bad person everytime she posts.
