Hello, I have just recently realized my little girl Mango has a baby in her pouch.. I'm so excited.... I have 5 suggies in the cage. I was just wondering if I should take her and Mo(father) out and put them in another cage...What are some suggestions? I'm kinda torn about leaving her in the cage with the whole family or give her time to bond with the baby before itroducing the rest of my little brat pack....
SUGGESTIONS PLEASE

I don't have much knowledge here. but i'd say...(just guessing here) seperate them. make sure momma has lots of protein. basicly you will go by what momma wants because basicly daddy will eat whatever she does too. i say lots of mealies! make sure she has her vitamens(rep-cal) mabye some yogurt as a treat. thats also good for her calcium. every now and then not often at all, dip a mealie in some honey. mine go crazy!!

Mealies are not a source of protein. They are mostly fat, and the honey is horrible for gliders teeth.

I don't know anything about separating from the rest of the colony, but I do know she needs an increased amount of protein. Chicken, fish, eggs, etc.

It's okay to leave her in with the others, I doubt it would cause any issues.

I kno nothing about joeys or anything like that...but I would imagine it would make sence to put mama and daddy in another cage...but dont takew my advice on it cuz i dont kno...lol...i just wanted to add in my uneducated opinion...lol...also as far as the mealies go....they are EXTREMELY fattening...I dont kno if its good for a mama to be or not, but i do kno that i was using mealies as my sole protien source, b/c thats what i was told to do, and then my boys started gaining some weight, that wasnt needed, lol. I later found out how dangerous it can be to give them mealies in they way I was doing...so please be careful about that suggielover, cuz to many can be very bad....i only kno for experience....good luck with your joey!!! Cant wait to see pictures!!!!!

OOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I give them fresh mealies everyday... my vet said they need about 12 a day?????????? I also give them the leadbetters diet and fresh fruit everyday..
Should I give them a break from the millies? and as far as the cage situation goes...I just don't want her to get stressed out... I plan on just sticking the other cage on top of my big cage...sooooo, that chould be OK huh

Mealies should be given in moderation as a snack, please no more than 6 a day.
I posted the post above not knowing the situation between all of your gliders, are they family or just cage-mates? Family should be alright together, but if any glider starts to mess with her, it would be a good idea to separate them for the time being. Gliders can get stressed from missing family members, this is the reason why I would not recommend separating them.. it could lead to stress which could lead to health related issues.

the person i bought my suggie from printed the BML diet for me and it says they should have 8-12 a day of small, 5-7 medium, 3-4 large, and 1-2 superworms.the woman typed it up and printed it for me, but it doesnt seem right on 1 part. she put she feeds hers some moths, june bugs, and evenman "o" wars.i thought u werent supposed to do that?well thats aabout it on insects. but that 1 part soundss screwed up. or is it just me?

I have plenty of experience and time put into this board without you being rude and belittling me.

It's not an opinion. Mealies are extremely fattening and are not to be used as a source of protein, but as a treat.

Chicken, fish, eggs, lean hamburger, lean pork, and things of that nature are to be used as protein for suggies.

I totally agree with this. Most of these types of proteins cost less than mealies do. You can do many things with these types of proteins, get creative!
I personally use eggs(scrambled)with a small amount of cottage cheese mixed in as my protein source for my suggies and they love it!

If you are feeding the original BML, I would recommend about 4 or 5 mealies per glider per day maximum. You do not want to feed an excessive amount of fat to mama for many reasons. One important reason is that excessive fat in the mama glider's diet can cause fatty deposits in the joeys' eyes, causing blindness.

You can supplement mama's diet with lowfat yogurt (just a small amount) if you like. If you are feeding the correct BML diet, this isn't crucial, because the diet is balanced in and of itself.

Also you are eventually going to have to do some seperating or even better neutering or you will end up with inbred suggies, they mate very fast and you your cage can be over taken very quickly. Say you have a female joey dad will try to mate with her or vice versa.

You don't have to feed mealworms, but it's a nice treat for them. Make certain you feed the BML diet exactly as written. Keep us posted on those babies! :-)
