Well, yesterday I drove 2.5 hours north to pick up a second glider. Asimov gets a friend! This glider was born of the same breeder, same room, but different cage than Asimov. He is one week younger. He nipped, lunged, and crabbed at me like any joey in a new environment. As I traveled home and got within 10 miles, I was pulled over by a state trooper. 75 in a 55. As he is asking why I was going so fast, my new little joey started crabbing in the travel case next to me. He asks what it is... so I pull him out and show him. He was in awe. The conversation quickly turned into nothing but glider talk. I was let go with a warning :) The last thing the cop ask was "So how do I spell 'sugar glider'? Is it just like you would expect?" LOL - So my new baby boy is named 'Dillinger'. Because just like the real John Dillinger (who was also from Indiana like us), my baby boy has a knack for evading law enforcement :) Anyway, I'm weak and I rolled the dice. Dillinger was just slightly more crabby than Asimov on his first day. And when Dillinger started crying at night (just like Asimove did) I decided to give Asimov extended outside the cage play time. I introduced Asimov to Dillinger in the bathroom. I can tell you that Asimov was overjoyed when he met Dillinger. Dillinger was a little resistant, but it was a general fear of a new environment. I gambled even deeper... I decided to give them supervised in the main cage time. And I literally witnessed Asimov inviting Dillinger up to his sleeping quarters when Dillinger cried. And, they are asleep there now. They groomed each other, and rubbed their bellies on each other. I know I broke some intro rules... but hearing a joey cry is the most heart-breaking sound I have ever heard. I spoke with the breeder about it yesterday before doing this, and she felt it shouldn't be a huge problem. With the parents cages next to each other, the familiar scents were there. Am I a horrible companion parent?
