Well, yesterday I drove 2.5 hours north to pick up a second glider. Asimov gets a friend! This glider was born of the same breeder, same room, but different cage than Asimov. He is one week younger.

He nipped, lunged, and crabbed at me like any joey in a new environment. As I traveled home and got within 10 miles, I was pulled over by a state trooper. 75 in a 55. As he is asking why I was going so fast, my new little joey started crabbing in the travel case next to me. He asks what it is... so I pull him out and show him. He was in awe. The conversation quickly turned into nothing but glider talk. I was let go with a warning :) The last thing the cop ask was "So how do I spell 'sugar glider'? Is it just like you would expect?" LOL - So my new baby boy is named 'Dillinger'. Because just like the real John Dillinger (who was also from Indiana like us), my baby boy has a knack for evading law enforcement :)

Anyway, I'm weak and I rolled the dice. Dillinger was just slightly more crabby than Asimov on his first day. And when Dillinger started crying at night (just like Asimove did) I decided to give Asimov extended outside the cage play time. I introduced Asimov to Dillinger in the bathroom. I can tell you that Asimov was overjoyed when he met Dillinger. Dillinger was a little resistant, but it was a general fear of a new environment. I gambled even deeper... I decided to give them supervised in the main cage time. And I literally witnessed Asimov inviting Dillinger up to his sleeping quarters when Dillinger cried. And, they are asleep there now. They groomed each other, and rubbed their bellies on each other.

I know I broke some intro rules... but hearing a joey cry is the most heart-breaking sound I have ever heard. I spoke with the breeder about it yesterday before doing this, and she felt it shouldn't be a huge problem. With the parents cages next to each other, the familiar scents were there.

Am I a horrible companion parent?

You're a lucky companion parent. Rolled the dice indeed, and it's a good thing you didn't come up craps. Vet visits are in order ASAP for wellness checks. Even though they came from the same breeder, there's always a chance of parasites or bacteria that were not there when you got Asimov, or that Asimov may have been exposed to before he met Dillinger. Schedule an appointment now, and one a month from now ... just to be on the safe side.

Now that I've scolded you, let me say I love your state trooper story! I also love the way that Asimov greeted Dillinger. I bet he remembered him from his babyhood, and was absolutely thrilled to see him again. Happy intros are always a blessing.

I love the state trooper story also. Dang why didn't I have my babies with me when I got my speeding tickets? If I get scolded on here I want it to be by Snusie she has such a nice way of telling you well you shouldn't of, but since you did this is a must!

Since snusie scolded you, I'll keep quiet this time. =x

Being a Criminal Justice major and will have to go into policing for at least four years, I hope this will happen to me one day when I'm on patrol. How couldn't you let someone go with a warning when they have a glider as cute as that?

Things worked out which is awesome, so there isn't anything to say about the introduction skipping. My girls also bonded immediately, and I had to break the quar. time because of my little escapee! I have got to note how dedicated you have been in your research on here, and how awesome it is that you got your little buddy a friend. I would keep an eye on them for the next week and have two food bowls, a few pouches, and perhaps even two water bottles, just in case they fight over food or sleeping and make sure they can be by themselves if they need. Sometimes even my girls will have a small spat and sleep in two separate pouches (especially because they wake up at different times and Wave will hiss at Vestra if she wakes her up early!). Please keep us updated on them and your bonding!

Welcome home Dillinger! At first, I thought you were going to say that the cop's name was Dillinger! LOL

You just don't know what your glider is missing as a lone glider... until they have a buddy! Bravo for getting your baby a forever friend!

Aren't you a rebel?! Breaking the law AND breaking the intro rules all in one day!

Loved the story. I have a similar story when I had gotten my chihuahua years ago. He was less than a pound when I got him. I was pulled over one day with him in the car and he kept barking at the cop. The cop thought he was too cute and let me go with just a simple "you can't make a U-turn there!"

Glad Asimov has a buddy now!
