Hi Everyone, I received a sad phone call the this weekend from my 19 y.o. nephew in Pennsylvania (I am originally from there). He was so upset to find out that Pennsylvania is one of only 5 states which still restricts it's citizens from owning 'exotic' captive-bred sugar gliders. He is one of the most responsible, loving, pet owners I know and see no reason why people in PA are any different from the rest of us. He said he researched and found out the only way that can change is if PA changes it's laws. Making them legal to own doesn't just support purchasing sugar gliders, but it also means making thousands of loving homes available to surrendered, abused and rescued gliders. My partner was so upset by this that he authored a petition online to be sent to the Pennsylvania Legislature requesting to have this law amended or a new bill added to the books. Please take the time to go to this petition (link below), read it and feel free to sign your name as support...YOU do not need to be a citizen of Pennsylvania to sign this petition....You only need to enter your name & e-mail address. Your e-mail will NOT be 'displayed online or used' for any purpose other than this petition http://www.petitiononline.com/petsinpa/petition.html
Lets help all people of Pennsylvania have a 'choice'....Thank you for your time and support. JediMasterMatt

Matt, I believe there have been other petitions for gliders in PA. Im at work right now and dont have access to my bookmarks - but will try to look tonight when I get home.
My nephew said that there were one or two other petitions online, but the petitions are older and none of the contacts (authors) respond to any e-mail inquiries about the status of these petitions. JediMasterMatt Glider USA 60 Posts quote: Originally posted by Anonymous

I have to disagree with you, only because 'IF' the Pennsylvania Game Commission would get word that he sugar gliders, they would most likely confiscate them and 'put them down', plus give him a hefty fine....that's a risk my nephew wouldn't want to take. I don't know if the wording can be altered at this point, but the petition is incorrect that there are only 2 states where sugar gliders are illegal. They are illegal in California, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Alaska and Massachusetts. They are also illegal in St. Paul (MN), the 5 boroughs in NYC and some counties in TX.
Thanks for that info, I will check and see if it can be altered...I received that original information from my nephew and will have him contact his source. JediMasterMatt Glider USA 60 Posts quote: Originally posted by skittlesandpeanut
just a quick question about this whole thing....I live in maryland and have family in pa. I visit pa often and I take my suggies with my when i visit pa. Actually just last weekand I was in pa with my suggies. Is that alos illegal, or is it only illegal to actually own them in pa??
I am not sure, but I think its only illegal if you cross state lines with the intention to sell/trade/breed/buy/adopt sugar gliders within Pennsylvania. JediMasterMatt Glider USA 60 Posts quote: Originally posted by kyro298
Do you know how many signatures are needed? I signed but sometimes people are apprehensive about putting any sort of personal info on anything. There are other glider boards too if you want to try getting more response.
No particular number of signatures are needed, but it would be nice to get as many as I can... Also, no personal info except your name and e-mail are required, and your e-mail will NOT be posted publicly and only used for the purpose of the petition. Thanks!
Some photos from our members MTol Glider VA, USA 59 Posts Stevos Joey 43 Posts I have to agree with Catman, but i didnt want to be the first to say it. You cant be serious Catman? You act like that even if his nephew was a "50 year old lady with a horse trailer full of gliders" he wouldnt have 45 other states to sell them in? that was an completely ridiculous comment to make. Everyone should be able to enjoy a pet suggie. Yes, alot don't realize the work that is involved until after they get it but I dont see you making petitions to enforce more strict regulations on gliders in your state. I signed it..despite the hundreds of thousands of people in PA just waiting for gliders to be legal so they can torture them paha JediMasterMatt Glider USA 60 Posts quote: Originally posted by Catman
I'm sorry but I think they need more regulations(or at least enforce the laws we already have) on exotic animals not less. There is a problem with too many animals that need homes right now with domestic and exotic. " where else could I possibly get better support from?" Take a guess! People in it for the $$$. And they will move in if/when the law is changed. For all I know your 19 year old nephew is really a 50 year old lady with a horse trailer full of gliders waiting on the border. Sorry I can't sign anything without knowing all the facts.
Well Catman, I appreciate your honesty!.....but I guess your train of thought is you have your own gliders, SO SCREW EVERYONE ELSE. Its ashamed that you don't give a crap about anyone else's opportunity to get sugar gliders. Secondly, I know there are a lot of people out there wanting to make $$$ off of sugar gliders, that is the reason I didn't want to go to places like PetSmart or Petco and pass out flyers or even e-mail PPP to get support for this petition. You can at least give me credit for having some scrupples. I am all for more laws protecting sugar gliders and setting rules and care guidelines, but I don't think individuals should be restricted from owning them if they have the proper education. As for the 'old lady' comment...that's just plain rude! JediMasterMatt Glider USA 60 Posts quote: Originally posted by tisha

***UPDATE*** This post has had over 168 views, BUT 'only' 14 people have signed the petition! Was I wrong to expect support from the Sugar Glider Community on this subject?
I just now signed it because I'm just now seeing this thread. But honestly, I ALMOST didn't just because of that edit. It kind of sounded a little rude to me, BUT, I did sign the petition because it's for the animals. Just want to let you know that you may get fewer people to sign that would have signed, just by saying that. I'm sure you didn't intend it to sound rude. The post has only been up for a day so just give it some time. Anyway, just because there are 168 views doesn't mean 168 different people viewed the thread. One person could have viewed it 20 times. So, just keep that in mind.
Tisha, I didn't mean for it to come across rude, all I meant was that I was expecting more support than 14 signatures from a community that advocates responsible ownership and open arms to new owners. I thought people who owned sugar gliders would want other people (with proper research) to be able to have the same opportunity as you and I to raise such wonderful animals....that's all I am asking for, fairness. JediMasterMatt Matt, I wanna thank you for starting this petition. I for one totally agree with you. Whats the difference between me having a glider in Ohio and someone having one in Pennsylvania when its only an hour away? I understand where the concerns from the other glider-parents are coming from, but their worries happen in every state. It would not make the glider situation worse. In fact, perhaps if PA were legal maybe gliders that needed rehomed would have somewhere to go. I also was surprised to find that I was only the 17th to sign it. I posted it to my facebook and such and will encourage my family and friends to also sign it. Lets get this thing rolling! JediMasterMatt Glider USA 60 Posts quote: Originally posted by arn26

Arn26: Thank you for being so understanding...the whole 'basic' idea behind the petition is FAIRNESS. If they are legal in most states, why shouldn't they be legal in all states? Why shouldn't everyone have the same opportunity that you and I have?
