I can handle the mealies, but I haven't had the stomach to do the pinkies yet.

Do me a favor, take a pic of what the pinkies look like. I've seen the box at PetSmart but I'm too chicken to buy them and see what's in the box.

PM it to me if you don't wanna post it on the open forum.

Also, let me know how well they "clean up" the mess. If they leave very little remains I might be able to do it, but if there's blood, bones, and distinguishable parts, I don't think I'll be able to do it.

Thanks!

Yeah, they are happy with those items, but mine go nuts when they get to hunt moths or mosquito eaters. I know some people have given blood feathers and said their gliders went crazy for them! I can only imagine the elation they would feel at eating mice or chicks!

Ok guys, i did it. It was not easy. My mom and pop kind of vet/pet store gave me the three babies. When i got home i put them right into the freezer without even looking or touching the bag. So about two hours before my glider babies got up i took them out and got my tweezers ready and my bowl. Taking a deep breath i started to peel the bag slowly open because i didnt know what to expect. They put three very frozen pinkies in a ziploc bag. With my tweezers i picked them up out of the bag and put them in the bowl. Thank god they were frozen because if they would have squished at all i would have lost it! They looked like they were a few days old. There bellys were full of milk and were kind of pinkish. I was so scared but i put the dish into there cage and tried to forget about it. Thank goodness i have a solid colour kitchen. When my babies in there cage they did there usual run and play thing. Then they kind of disapeared into the bottom of the cage and stayed there. No fighting no noise. I went to bed. This morning i got my babies out into there pouch. I slowly pulled out the kitchen and the bowl was empty. I was shocked! I was expecting blood and guts everyware. There was nothing. Not one bit of anything anyware. All gone. My fear is gone! I will definately do this once a week!

Aparently if there hoppers they leave the skin like a bear skin rug. Im going to stick to frozen pinkies lol. Myne were thawd by the time i put them in the cage though. I was terrified at the thought of what could be left but not now. I dont know if they clean it up every time though. I put one pinkie for every glider. Its not so bad. The worst was putting them in the dish. Its going to be a regular part of there diet now.

I'm with Jazz on this one. I don't know that I could handle doing that, it's the only thing keeping me from getting snakes...

How do pinkies compare nutritionally? Are they better than eggs/chicken? In the past I've read that they weren't considered that healthy...but if research has changed (doesn't it always??) I'd be curious to see how it stacks up...

You know I clean up horse/cow bits from tiger/lion cages...but I don't know how I'd feel about cleaning up mouse bits from my glider cages. It seems...weird.

I'm not 100% sure but I would think they would have a bit more nutrition than some regular chicken breast simply because if they eat the whole thing they are getting organ meats/brain/bone.

I may be way off on that, just using logic.

That makes sense, actually. I just worry about what they may have come in contact with prior to being frozen... But, I suppose pinkies wouldn't have a whole lot of time to come into contact with nasties before...
I think my aversion to the idea probably comes alot from wanting a pet rat... or mouse... or both... BUT the parents say no more critters until I'm out of the house.

You guys are so funny!

I know its loaded in protine for them.
I will let someone else do the studies that cares to do that sort of thing.

I dont feed a recognized diet. I dont know about my gliders levels or percentages of what there intake is every night. Ive done enough looking and reading up on how they live in the wild and im just trying to give them the closest diet i can to that. Some will agree and some wont and thats ok.

Ill keep you all updated on the clean up situation as its going to be a once a week thing for my babies lol.

They had three more pinkies last night. I did it the same as before, putting them in the dish and letting them thaw then putting them in. My babies went right for the dish. So i sat on the floor and watched them eat. I had to know what it was like because im still shocked at the lack of clean up. It was no big deal. They just started to eat them wherever. There was nothing oozing or anything like that. I would compair it to them eating an apple. You could see where they had taken bites but it was very clean. Again there was nothing to clean up. The dish was just empty. So for thoes of you who are brave enough to try it, its not so bad!

It was pinky night last night! Lol. Still nothing to clean up. This time i sat and watched Mesha eat one. I only watched because she went into the kitchen, grabed a pinky, and ran behind the wheel to eat it. Lol. Maby she didnt want to share i dont know. So i got front row seats. Ugh. It wasent a gory oozing mess but it wasent clean either. You know how you get milk moustashes, well....she had a moustash but it wasent milk. Lol. She ate it and i got to see the innerworkings of a pinky. On the plus side, i didnt get sick and now know how they eat them. I doubt i will watch again but im still feeding pinkies!

Lmao! Im sooo with you. I hate all bugs and creepy crawlies. I dont even give my gliders mealies myself. Hubby has to put them in a bowl in there cage. I use long tweezers for the pinkies and only handle the bag carefully so i dont accidently touch them. There frozen when i handle them too. So although im slowly finding ways to handle these creepy things i do find interesting ways to do it. ( yes, i still run from bugs and everybody laughs) On the positive side ive never been eaten by a bug either! Lol.
