My baby barked for hours last night! Normally when she does this, if i grab/pet her, she stops - not last night! She ran from me and even when i had her in my hand, she would keep barking! NOTHING i tried would get her to stop :-( I tried holding, petting, treat giving, putting her buddy near her, rubbing under her chin, putting her in various pouches, etc
Any ideas on why they do this? Ive heard sometimes it's to alert the colony, but there is nothing in the house any different from any other night. I have also heard they maybe call to others, but she has one cage mate, and even when i put him right beside her, she kept barking.
Are there other reasons you guys know of?

She has a cagemate? Sometimes they just bark be because they feel like it. Maybe she likes the sound of her own voice.

Maybe she heard something you didn't? Or saw a teenie bug? Is there a TV nearby? Perhaps whatever was on startled her(even if it hasn't before)... She might have been in heat?
Or maybe she just had a lot to say lol

petluv - lol! she sure did have a lot to say! I was exhausted and she wouldn't let me sleep! I didn't think about the heat thing, but i think she's still young for that.
omisnkaisgma- yup! she has a cagemate and even his presence couldn't quiet her!
I guess it never occurred to me that she just could be a loud mouth! my male never barks ... only she does. It's just she has never done it this long before. I just want to make sure she isn't stressed out about something. She's healthy and sweet as ever otherwise.

My female BARKS ALL THE TIME! lol she is such a loud mouth haha but i think she does it to tattle on her cage mate haha she picks on him and then wants to come running to mommy when he picks back lol its so funny! sometimes she will just sit at the cage door and dark and i know that she is wanting something like a treat or to play. Every night around 930pm-10pm she will stand on her food kitchen and bark and thats telling me that she is ready for dinner and i better hurry up and feed her haha! they bark for various reasons and its not always for bad, my male never barks but my girl will do it all the time. i thought something was wrong the first few times she woke me up in the middle of the night but now i know she has me trained to get up and play with her (little stinker!) she was deffinitly telling you something ha i wish we could hear what they say!

She may have heard something outside that just did not get your attention. My gliders bark when the sprinklers come on outside at 3 AM. I do not hear the sprinklers. unless I open the window or sliding door to the porch but the gliders always let me know.
They used to bark when my son's alarm went off on the other side of the house. They would bark a full 5 minutes before he even opened his door to leave his room.

Rue used to bark all the time. Every single night. He would bark at my dogs (who were barking), he would bark at me, and sometimes he would just stare and bark into the distance. I figure he was lonely. So I got a female and now he hardly ever barks. They mostly just "tssk" at each other.
